2012 Draft Class

Plenty of other threads about this.

We should be able to keep most.

Luck and T.Y. Will probably be top priorities.

Allen and Fleener will both stay in my opinion unless we are extremely impressed with Doyle.

If Pep stays I think we will try and keep all 3 (even though we didn't draft Doyle).

I don't think we keep Chapman due to Kerr and Hughes getting more snaps than him. We may keep Ballard on a minimum deal. I expect TY to get a Antonio Brown like deal and Andrew Luck to get top 5 (if not top 3) quarterback money. Fleener and Allen will be the tough choices. Fleener may go if someone pays him more money but I think we give Allen a good deal.

I think we'll be able to keep all that we want to keep.

The salary cap is about to go up.    Way up!

There will be room for all the players that we want -- even if Luck takes home $25 Mill per.....

Isn't that a wash, as other teams will have more money with which to sign away some of our players?

I don't think luck is money motivated so will just want fair contract winning superbowls his goal

Not once has a player signed for less in their first big contract. Older players very rarely do. It's some sort of dream that fans make up.

Tom Brady is in the 2nd year of a 5 year contract for 70M, 14M annual.  I don't expect Luck to sign for 14M but I agree with those who say that Luck is team oriented and win oriented like Brady.  Luck is worth 25M or more on the open market but he will sign for less, I think.  Irsay will pay him what he asks.

Meanwhile back on planet earth....

The very simple reality is that will be the highest paid player in league history as soon as he signs his next contract.

It's going to come down to Luck. I'm sure the Colts are willing to pay him that much but will he do it or take a Colin Kaepernick like deal.

I like Chapman and think we keep him if healthy.  Kerr and Hughes are seeing more snaps because we are playing with big leads and aren't forced to stop the run.  Believe me, if we get in a ground-and-pound, knock-down-drag-out game Chapman will see more snaps than Kerr or Hughes as he is the best run-stuffer we've got and that is a huge asset.  Kerr and Hughes are a quicker and if we've got leads and can pin the ears back, being confident we're defending the pass, Kerr and Hughes will continue to get reps as they give us a better chance at a sack.

I think we'll be able to keep all that we want to keep.

Agree!  Luck deserves a huge paycheck, but Grigs has been very savvy with how he deals with back-loading contracts and guaranteed money.  I imagine Luck will get a lot of money, but will work it out in a way that it doesn't totally kill our cap.  With the salary cap increasing we should be able to give Luck a massive deal, but I honestly do believe he cares more about winning than being highest paid player.

not to mention the players union would have kittens if Luck took a small deal. Like Manning said once, part of contract talks is setting up the next guy like the guy before you set you up.

Meh, many NBA players have taken less and it didn't hurt the next player in line. Plus, the nfl union is horrible....I would tell them to suck an egg.

Having said that, NFL players are rarely in the position to take less like their NFL brethren.

I admit, I love the Colts and other Colts fans, but the short, hair trigger reactions are so annoying.  I notice something said Holmes is gone.  Just like Trent Richardson?  Or the coaching staff?  Or Castonzo being moved to right tackle?  How do we actually know all that is going on with Holmes?  Maybe his ankle is still bad so they have no reason to rush him?  He has played badly?  I know he is hurt, but was he bad when he played?  No.   I just think we have to stop acting like we know everything going on with the team when we don't have that information. And why would a 4th round pick who has great potential who wouldn't cost much be gone???  That would be a terrible mistake as far as value and cost.

I just wish fans take in things as a whole instead of each week wanting someones head or calling someone a bust.

Luck, TY and Allen will probably require large contracts.

With the others it depends on how big the contracts would be.

Richardson might be kept because his contract would not be very big.  I can't imagine him getting more then 3 million a year with very little guaranteed.

Well there is a difference between a player just asking for a fair contract and a player trying to ring every dime they can out of a club. so m

If you look at Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers deals you can see that.  Flacco sqeezed everything out of the Ravens he could.  Rodgers just quickly signed a fair deal that only paid him slightly more then Flacco even though Rodgers is so much better then Flacco their contracts shouldn't be even comparable.

No question Luck is getting paid and 25 million is probably going to be about right.  And he will likely be the highest paid player in the NFL when he signs.  But if he wanted to ring the Colts for everything he could probably get closer to 27 or even 30 mil.  Franchise QB's have so much bargaining power that you almost have to pay them what they want.  Otherwise you just end up franchising them over and over again til you can no longer do so and they walk and find someone who will give them what they want.

Outside of Luck, which is a no brainier, I think Allen will be the biggest priority, not to down play the job T.Y. has done, because he is an outstanding player, but if you just look at the way the NFL types always talk about "prototypical size" and such then you have to figure that Allen is more valuable just from a body build standpoint. I would still expect T.Y. to get an offer but I would be surprised if his deal got done before Allen. Then following T.Y.'s deal i think they'd look at and T-rich and Chapman. Fleener is the odd man out in my opinion, just because re-signing him seems like a luxury move and I'm sure he's going to get a better offer on the market than what the colts offer, especially if you factor in the fact they will need to re-sign Costonza and most likely will want to keep Bradshaw, and that's not even adding in our annual "nobody loves me" wide out pick up of the year.
