Actually cracker isn't a racial term used to insult whites by other races. It's a class warfare term.

It was used in the 18th century by rich plantation owners to describe the lower class whites who were poor and often indentured servants to a snob family...I.E. an older version of "white trash". Made up to break the classes down even further besides the use of race, and invented by who? Rich scum exerting their superiority over the poor class.

Learning is pretty fun isn't it?

Racial slurs could be directed to Gresham, to the official (or Gresham as well), it only has to be  "abusive, threatening, or insulting language" as has been pointed out in at least two prior posts that appears you have completely skipped over. And i think things were said, but not exactly what.

No I read your posts and feel bad about myself for doing that. The problem with your last sentence is you "think things were said" you don't know. And seriously these are grown men they need to grow up if they are "aghast by abusive, threatening, or insulting language."

The ref touched Walden which was the officials mistake. Then when Walden told him what he could do with himself and pushed his hand off the referee proceeded to pee his pants, throw a flag fifteen inches from his waist, and eject a guy for no reason other than the fact that he got embarrassed on tv.

Nobody knows what was said, but it certainly appears something was.  And NFL was emphasis to be placed on penalizing that abusive type language This_Year. Contrary to your desire. Not just profanity. But the Insulting, threatening, and abusive language directed at an opponent or official is what will get flagged.  And rules state the Refs have the ability to eject a player on those grounds as well. Probably a waste of a link on you but-

Only If from behind, I'd agree.  But he was in front of both players separating them.  He can do that as an official trying to prevent flare up in the situation and preventing ensuing fights. The rules Walden broke are there to protect the official from any player retaliating on the ref for him not letting angry player to get at his opponent. Walden got ejected because he did not employ discipline.  And has lapsed previously as well.

The rest of your post just means you can't be taken seriously and want to detour points of the discussion and fill it with your funny jokes.

Watching my team march backward 15 yards doesn't bring to me one small amount of pleasure.

Hold that thought....

He was engaging an opposing player after the play was over. That will have refs getting between them physically every time. Walden is known for his extracurricular activities.

Walden deserved what he got. I'm happy, excited actually, that he got tossed. Hopefully this may prevent a more serious penalty in the late/post season.

You obviously took some pleasure in it. You were excited Walden got tossed, and that led to the 15 yard penalty.. Okay.

He's been on record about this in posts. He was indeed unhappy about giving a free 15 yards to the other team, and Happy that a proven undisciplined Walden got his ejection out of the way now so that maybe he might be inclined (and instructed) to be in more control later this year when the games and stakes are higher. Unfortunately gettng 15 yd penalty goes along with the ejection.  They're not separate, unfortunately.

Okay the problem with that rule is it is subjective (like many). One ref may be an easily offended and throw a flag, whereas another ref may not care about profanity. Unless Walden said "I'm going to wait in the parking lot and kill you after the game." or some horrible racial slur that could cause a horrific backlash I think it's petty  infantile to throw someone out of a game for language. This isn't peewee football.

I read the link by the way, so get off of your high horse.

Again "it appears something was", you are basing your argument on assumptions not facts. Not a leg to stand on sir.

If the official puts his hands on a player it's his on fault. If he wanted to do something he should've said stop, or thrown a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct before it escalated. Walden wouldn't have touched the referee had the referee kept his hands to himself. When you touch someone you shouldn't be shocked if they touch you back.

You crafty devil, a twistin muh words.

I'd be happy if he didn't commit a penalty. Being that he did, in fact, garner us a 15 yard PF penalty, I'm glad he got his butt tossed

I can think of about 60 yards he's cost us in the last few seasons, specifically due to PF's.

 I get you. I know you aren't a fan of the dude's attitude. I think it was dumb to toss him, and I think the rule is flawed. Had it been a malicious reaction I would think differently. I am not a fan of the language being a reason to toss a guy rule either, unless it's racial between two different races.

Since most of this thread is predicated on assumption anyway, I'm not ruling out that Walden didn't tell the official to get his hands off of him before he pushed his hand off. I know if I were in that situation I would tell the ref to take his hands off of me.

Also I do enjoy debating with you. It's fun.

Too bad nobody slapped Mike Carey's big bald head. That dude is the worst.

I think they should replace the "Ask Mike" segment with asking a drunk fan in a bar's opinion. It would be about as accurate in terms of rule interpretation and far more amusing. Maybe even have a fan from each team to drunkly argue about the call? It'd be great if we could check in on them as the game wore on to see the increasing affect of the booze.

Sky(?) over here used to do a alternate commentary option which was a fan from each team commentating on the game. Pretty amusing at times.

The referee is the police on the field.  It is his job to separate participants in an altercation to prevent any further escalation. if a player brushes off the ref doing that job, the NFL wants said player to sit out the rest of the game. And the commissioner will determine if more punishment is needed; depending upon what happened. No matter how heated you are, or innocent the gesture. No player has any right to stand up to an official.  Let the coaches make an argument/appeal. And then take it up with the League office later. No standing up to the Refs calls on the field.  The league can't, and won't stand for it.  That's why the Refs can, without question disqualify, a player. that tries and the (real) Police will personally escort that player off if he refuses to go.

The NFL rulebook is lengthy and specific.  If payers don't want to abide by them, they can go play in CFL or the Arena League.  But, ahem... , they also have lengthy rulebooks too.  ;-)

Gresham can act like Bo Bo the Clown jumping around like a giddy little school girl, as long as his antics and verbal output is not directed directly at the opponent, or the official. But I wish he did get a flag.

Walden wasn't in anybody's face at the time the official put his hands on him to "de-escalate" the situation!  Gresham dancing like Bo Bo is taunting another player.  It was directed at Walden because he was right there pointing his finger at him!

Your perception.  What I see is the official rushing in between the two players in close proximity with both arms stretched out separating these two guys.  And Walden's right arm is already getting in position to push that ref. So I don't agree the official was not attempting to engage in a de-escalation capacity from this picture alone.

The next few frames I have  would show the push from Walden, but that one showing the push and the full slo-mo gif has been posted in this thread before.

Whoever thinks Walden should be ejected is a major pedant. Common sense should prevail. Walden's intent wasn't to touch the official. It seemed as though he was pushing the player off of him and his arm brushed the official.

Lots of submissive, pedantic sentiments being expressed in this thread.

I don't think Walden should have been ejected for that little brush. Ref was on a power trip

Lol, that's more than Burfict was fined. Ridiculous.

exactly, touching an unprotected ref is bad & I suppose warranted the ejection in this case, but Walden didn't overtly try & inflict pain on the ref...

Burfict was INTENTIONALLY trying to hurt other players AFTER plays had been called dead, even targeting players past injuries...

huge difference in my opinion, and the fines don't reflect that, quite to the contrary in my opinion...

Offensive is based on the speaker, taking offense is based on the recipient, you didn't ask for one that you would take offense to, but all of those are used offensively.

I said I've been white for 28 years and I'm waiting for an offensive slur directed towards my race. No white person takes offense to any of those you listed, and if they say they do they are lying.

I'm sorry but even if Walden directed one of those "slurs" (as I roll my eyes) towards the official and that's the reason the ref tossed him, then that official should be fired. White guy getting offended by a black guy hurling a white racial slur? Oh remind me to feel sorry for the white guy after Doc Brown and I take the DeLorean back to the 1700's and change American history.

Notice how they conveniently left the part about the Referee touching Walden first off. It say "after he got between you and the opposing player to prevent confrontation." Getting in between someone and putting your hands on someone are two different things. The rule should be "Touch not, lest ye be touched." That fine is also ludicrous.

got a notification from bleacher report saying walden was fined about $27 000 !?!?!

#colts Erik Walden fined $27,562 by NFL for contact with official. Called it nonsense pic.twitter.com/gs8PwZG9mc

I have always been interested in how they come up with numbers like $27,562 when a nice round number would be just fine.

You can't put your hands on the receiver, the qb's head, and Whalden should have known not to put his hands on the ref. That is grounds for ejection even if you were trying to talk to him about a bad call.

Right! It appears quite a few here do not understand how the league will protect their officials from disrespectful actions while doing their job, provided they do it correctly.  Kuechly and Walden rulings demonstrate this.  Folks do not remember that even Bill Belichick got fined $50,000 for touching the arm of an official to get an explanation of a ruling that happened in the game (Game was over when he did this, or I'm certain BB would have been ejected from the game as well).

And these were the replacement referees, not the usual NFL trained guys we're used to abusing on blogs and message boards.

Yeah it's like saying a person deserved a traffic ticket for going over the speed limit by one for like two seconds because it's the law!

We have no idea what was said, so as coffeedrinker said in another post, anyone saying anything definitively about this situation is doing so out of ignorance.  None of us have all of the information to make the determination.  The only thing we know is that Walden put his hands on a ref.  That in and of itself is enough reason for the flag and ejection.

No I read your posts and feel bad about myself for doing that. The problem with your last sentence is you "think things were said" you don't know. And seriously these are grown men they need to grow up if they are "aghast by abusive, threatening, or insulting language."

While I agree that the rule about language is a bit ridiculous, it is still nevertheless a rule.  If you have a problem with the rule, that's fine...but having a problem with the people that are enforcing the rule is ridiculous.  The bottom line is, it's a rule, and it's not difficult NOT to break it.

As for the ref touching Walden, I simply don't understand your thinking here.  Ref's touch players all the time.  They step in between players to prevent situations from escalating.  That is their jobs.  As someone said, if Refs weren't allowed to touch players, then player piles on top of a fumble would never get sorted out.

If two players are in each others' faces and a fight is about to break out, do you really think they're going to stop by a Ref saying "Please stop.  Please don't fight".   :slaphead:

I said I've been white for 28 years and I'm waiting for an offensive slur directed towards my race. No white person takes offense to any of those you listed, and if they say they do they are lying.

Wow, that is one of the most nonsensical things I've ever read.  How could you possibly begin to think you know what every white person thinks?

I'm sorry but even if Walden directed one of those "slurs" (as I roll my eyes) towards the official and that's the reason the ref tossed him, then that official should be fired. That's just stupid.  The ref simply enforced a rule that was put in place by the league.  It sounds like your problem is with the rule, not the ref.
