Doesn't he already play Safety in some packages (of which my knowledge is nonexistant)? I could see the reasoning but it would make more sense to use someone that won't affect the lineup even moreso. I kind of see the Jalil Brown signing as perhaps a sign that they plan on trying Purifoy at safety. Or that they just wanted more corners and we only had less because of all the injuries at the cutdown to 53. Both plausible I suppose.

Butler has neither the physical traits nor the coverage skills to play S.

If he ever sees the position, it means we are in big trouble.  Butler is an above average Nickel in this league.  And that's not a bad thing at all.  Is it a coincidence that he has played his best this year at Nickel?  I think not.

Not trying to be a jerk, OP, just my honest assessment.

Actually the best nickel CB in the game until proven otherwise

Either McDonald or Purifoy

Leave everyone else where they are. Expect McNary, feel he's better suited for OLB instead of ILB imo

I agree -- I've been saying since preseason that we should give Purifoy a shot at S.  Jalil Brown is 6'1 and 205 lbs... I don't know much about his game, but he's got much more size for S than Butler does.. I really hope we start moving McNary around when Freeman comes back -- I think he is really suited to be a pass-rusher and think he can be effective if coming from the middle or the edge, and probably most effective if we can get him in some packages to mix him up.  I have been pleased with McNary's play, but think he's better suited to be a 3rd down or rushing LB'er -- I hope with Freeman's return we'll be able to see McNary rushing from multiple positions.

Seen this in another thread wondered what the chances of it happening could be

I don't think so -- if we're gonna move any CB's to S it will be Purifoy or Jalil Brown. Butler is too small for S and is built with ideal size/quickness to play slot DB.

Jalil Brown and Purifoy both have similar physical attributes -- either would be a better fit at S than Butler.

Agree with earlier poster, Butler is just too good at corner. I would rather see them experiment with some others at S, and see what they can bring to S p

Agreed! He is too small for S --- he is perfect as a nickel back (I think he is way more than just 'above average' at that spot -- I think he may very well be the best slot DB in the NFL).  He is ideally suited to play versus a slot WR who is small and quick (e.g., Welker) and is not built to hold up against a very big/physical WR or TE.

Jalil Brown is going to get a chance at safety in my opinion. He could be replacing a defensive back of ours. Someone is getting moved though for sure.

It really depends on what they do with Mike Adams. He is versatile enough to play FS or SS. If they keep him at SS then Purifoy or Brown would get the nod. Purifoy and Brown are better at coverage than run support and tackling. If they move Adams to FS then McDonald would get the start due to that being his natural position.

I think Adams and Mcdonald may make a good safety tandem.  I think Mcdonald has the speed and the size to play either position, but I think he may be better suited as an in the box safety.  All of his film displays excellent tackling skills, good instincts, decent but not great hands.

In my own little world I'd like to see Purifoy and Mcdonald back there as the starting safeties. I'm not sure it has a high likelihood of happening, so I'm happy with the Adams is playing for now.  Hopefully we can get one of these two guys on the field.

Id rather have Purifoy or Dewey McDonald in at FS than take Butler out of his nickel corner role.

You don't have to take him out of his nickel role. He can play safety in the base defense and continue to play his nickel/dime corner role when they bring in their sub packages and let Sergio Brown or Colt Anderson or whoever play safety in those packages

If we did that at the start of the season, Butler could've been well on his way to a 10int season haha

True.

Fair point.

Looks like Sergio is getting the start at saftey... Dont know if purifoy is aggressive enough.

I really think its probably a seniority thing. Brown has been here longer than Purifoy, McDonald, and Anderson, and he has more experience starting than any of these three.

I could very wrong though. He could actually be a better safety. I have never been impressed with Brown and didn't want him to start but we will see, hopefully he is starting cause he actually is good lol.

    • I just thought I would take this opportunity to brag a bit about the fact that I had the opportunity to chat with Peyton at the Masters last week for about 5 minutes.  Truly a bucket list experience and I must say, he has the Southern Hospitality that one might expect but wow- did not expect to run into him and it was quite the experience.  It just had to be the one place left on earth where cell phones are banned, so no picture opportunity unfortunately.   I told Peyton that my first Colts experience was riding to Buffalo in a blizzard when the Colts were 14-0 and they benched him only to lose that game. I said thanks for my first Colts experience being one where he was riding the pine.  He laughed, apologized to me and said that if it was up to him he would have been checking down in that snow storm for 4 quarters.  He thanked me for the support, and was asking me a bit about myself, where I am from, etc.  Quite the gentleman! I think it was obligatory for him to be nice to patrons while he was wearing his Green Jacket, but none the less....a great experience meeting a childhood hero. Lynn Swann walked up to us while we were talking and shook Peyton's hand.  I joked that now was the perfect time for a 10 yard slant- and then slid into the bushes like Homer Simpson with humility.    Unforgettable experience everyone!   Would love to hear some of your Peyton stories from over the years, since it is a bit of a slow time of year before the draft! Let it fly Colts fans
    • I agree.  I think this is another one of those over-hyped QB classes that will probably never perform to the level of the hype. But -- teams still need a quarterback.  And will convince themselves that that must take one of these quarterbacks.  That it's the only solution to their problem.  If I was forced to choose, I would probably go with Heisman winner Jayden Daniels.  I'm concerned that Caleb Williams may have some personality issues to go with his lack of measurables, even though he shows strong ability to improvise.  Drake Maye has the measurables, but I have questions regarding the level of opposition playing at UNC.  It's not the same as playing the equivalent of the Crimson Tide every single week.  JJ McCarthy is "good".  And he's been successful.  He led his team to a BCS championship.  And?  I see him in the same mold as AJ McCarron.  Supremely successful in college, but not good enough to be The Guy in the pros.
    • Right. KC was also a perennial playoff team prior to Mahomes taking over. The Colts are a fringe playoff team at best, until we see if AR can lift the roster.    And to your point, Veach took over the summer before Mahomes’ rookie year. Hard to compare how KC’s FO approach with Dorsey at GM (for several years) vs. when Veach took over. It seems like Ballard has been more like Dorsey and Veach might just operate differently from both of them.    If Ballard wanted to follow the Veach KC model, he sure waited a long time to do it once Luck retired.
    • DeFo was an aggressive move.   But I wouldn’t classify Wentz or Ryan as aggressive moves. Getting Stafford would have been an aggressive move at QB. Wentz was cheaper and PHI was looking to dump him. They didn’t even budge from their initial offer to PHI  And Ryan sort of fell in their laps after they dumped Wentz.
    • I think most important option is missing in the poll : No One.   I think it's a fairly average QB class that it's okay to not like anybody enough to draft him. There's no one QB that Wows you with their pocket passing Caliber or pure athletic traits or good combination of both. It's like a tweener class of all those abilities, having lop-sided combination of above said skills.    And, this poll, rather than forcing to pick one QB, needed that extra option to express staying away from this QB class.
