So because you made a pro bowl in the past you remain a pro bowl caliber player?

You obviously didn't watch Bethea last season. Nothing pro bowl claiber about that

I watched Bethea last season and he had probably his third best year as a pro.  And he's playing even better in SF than he did last year for the Colts.

I think we have done this before so here we go for the last time. 1, Bethea is good! 2, Yes even last year! 3, he has always been good! 4, the only thing he doesn't do as a free safety is have a lot of INT's, but would rather have a FS that tackles  well and plays solid football than a guy who doesn't tackle, not tough & comes up with some INT's! 5, Having played D-1 football as a safety I believe I may have a clue as to what is good and not good safety play! 6, the 49ers a good team and defense thought ENOUGH of him to PAY HIM!

Too each their own I suppose

People saw him get burned a couple of times against TEs and think he lost a step.  But he was never great at covering TEs, especially faster TEs.  For years in the Tampa 2 it wasn't an issue often but when it was an issue that part of his game was exposed.

I used to shake my head in amazement at this board, Howell had two games last year where he made two good its on the receiver as they were about the catch the ball and people would talk about how great that was and he needs to get more playing time and blah blah blah.  And then those same people would turn around and say Bethea lost a step even though he was doing that 3 or 4 times a game, in addition to playing like a another LB in the running game.

Meh he sure has not lost a step and overall he was a very good tackler but he wasn't and isn't what the team needs at Safety as long as we have Landry. Now had we not picked up Landry and landed a cover Safety then I'd just slide Bethea into Landrys spot

Any word on what type of PED he took?

There are major penalty's for anyone divulging that type information.  That definitely falls under PHI (protected health information).  I would doubt you ever find out.

There was a big eye opening experience from the combine, even though those players aren't under the NFLPA yet.  They went a checking into the leaks...

How many did you watch......I believe you said 2 games??????

I have seen 3 SF games this year and Bethea looks alive and well.  He moves much better than Mike Adams, and covers better than Landry.  He is playing with the enthusiasm he has always played with.  No need to slam him.

Once again, better defense around him. Still the average-below average safety from last season.

Easier to cover flaws when you have better players around you

He's solid thus far this season, but pro bowl caliber is a bit farfetched

You know Gavin that is a good point and probably the first good point I've seen mentioned with regard to Bethea.  The only thing I disagree with is the idea of a cover safety.  Pagano and Manusky do not want a cover safety, they want their safeties interchangeable.

It won't change your mind but I did find this:

From PFF

San Francisco – Performances of Note

Antoine Bethea, FS: +4.8

Breakdown: Bethea had a sound overall game, filling nicely in the running game and closing quickly while in coverage, but it was his third quarter big plays that stood out. He stripped tight end Zach Ertz of the ball to force the turnover early in the quarter and he did a nice job of tracking Foles’ interception. Bethea even added a crucial hurry late in the fourth quarter to force an errant throw on 3rd-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

Signature Stat: In addition to the big plays, Bethea led the 49ers with four stop and he didn’t miss any of his eight tackle attempts.

PFF Game Ball

Antoine Bethea was a game changer with his interception, forced fumble, and strong effort from start to finish.

Here is something from Ninernation

The 49ers secondary put together quite a performance. Antoine Bethea got the game ball in PFF's game recap. He finished with a 4.8 grade, covering an interception, a forced fumble, a QB pressure, and a team-high four stops. He made the huge stop of Lesean McCoy at the 1-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Bethea is PFF's highest graded safety.

Additionally, he was just named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Man, the Colts could really use some "average-below average" safety play like that.
