Luck is Regressing Under this Regime

High Valyrian

Andrew Luck is a guy that has always reminded me of a faster, more talented Ben Roethlisberger. Big, mobile, hard to tackle, and makes good throws/runs on the fly. Creative, ballsy, moves the chains. Exciting to watch. Innovative. He even makes tackles when needed. Moves fast. Elusive.

This regime has turned our franchise player into a bland, "game manager" type of QB. He's pretty boring to watch now. These geniuses are banging a round peg into a square hole and that's why Luck looks bad this year as compared to last year and even his rookie year. These bozos in charge are wasting his young NFL years.

/His hard-count is better...but overall play has regressed big time. That is NOT acceptable.

I don't think the play calling has been bad this year for the most part.  I think Luck just hasn't played well. He seemed oblivious to the blitz, even though the eagles kept doing the same exact one over and over.  He also missed quite a lot of easy-medium difficulty throws.  I think everyone wanted to anoint Luck as the 5th best qb in the league, but it's going to take some time for him to get there, which is okay.  Personally, I think we should have ran the ball even more last night.  It was working, the eagles had no answer for it, and Luck clearly was off.

One slightly disturbing stat about Luck I heard on SVP on Espn today was that going back to last year, out of 34 qualified quarterbacks, Luck is the ranked 30th in pass completion percentage on throws 10+ yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

That is because the * in charge are making him a "game manager" type QB. He was better last year in those situations as well as in his rookie year.

Joe Montana would be regressing with Pep at the controls. I don't mind getting beat but no one has beat us we have lost bc our OC needs training wheels. This is not the place to learn how to be an OC.

He gave the game away run the ball we might get the first down as long as you don't stubbornly try to pull Mewhort then kick the fg if you don't get it. If you are going to pass it roll Luck out they had been getting pressure up the middle all night dump it to Bradshaw or the TE rolling out behind him that play worked all night either way the  3pts  and a 2 possession game was the most important result.. My kids high school coach calls a better game.

Luck isn't playing at the same level of last year but he is showing the same problems in his game that were covered by the wins in the past years.

He was sometime erratic in his throws also last year, but in every match he put 2or3 drives to save the Colts.

I think that Luck needs to have more freedom at the LoS, because the best moments of Luck are always in no huddle situations, where he can manage the game as he prefers.

I wonder .....

If being the MOST HIT QB IN THE NFL has anything to do with this ...   ???     hmmmmfmmm?   Oh and the fact the OL is not getting better, and ....    oh ....    NO RUNNING GAME?     hmmmmmmmm?

NO, you know what makes a QB "hurry" .. ?/   getting his butt planted in the turf on a consistent basis.     The Colts are playing a VERY dangerous game with this kid.       Thank GOD he is as tough as he is..

I don't think this is entirely true, I would say "Luck is not being utilized correctly and being held back by the coaching." I don't think he's becoming less talented or is regressing, it's just impossible to play well with both an NFL opponnent and an incopetent gameplan working against him. I completely agree this falls on the coaching staff and I literally am shocked some of them get paid to do this. How can they not see the mistakes that a casual fan, like myself, can see? We're 2-0 with capable coaches.

Many of those hits are his own fault for hanging onto the ball to long....not all....But he clearly hangs onto the ball a bit to long often...though some of that is bad route concepts and players not getting open...Its not all of 1 thing

It's not the play selection, it's the grand scheme. Arians was PERFECT for a man of Luck's talents. I see Andrew's skill set betrayed by a stodgy power scheme that doesn't seem to be able to create down field opportunities. So few are the throws beyond 15 yards.

Bad protection is part of this, but I'm seeing coverage sacks more than anything. Receivers aren't getting open for some reason. The only thing I'm seeing come open with any consistency are the "man-beater" routes, crossing routes, quick slants etc.

Arians had Luck getting hit even more than he is now. The reason for the lack of downfield throws is the lack of time to read the progressions. Power scheme? Really?

Man, these overreaction threads just don't stop.

It isn't an over reaction. It's the only thing preventing us from being a legitimate threat to win it all. Pep has shown he only knows one style of offense. You wouldn't hire Eric Clapton to run an orchestra, sure he's the best human alive at playing guitar but that doesn't mean he can apply that to any kind of music. Pep is great at coaching run first offenses with power house o-lines and wearing other teams out. He's clueless when it comes moving it through the air effectively and using the run as a compliment. The latter we have elite level talent for, the former we do not. To continue as if we did is holding us back, has been for years now.

Out side of TY and Moncrief (who is simply not ready)   the rest of the group is either slow or a poor route runner.

Wayne is not the Wayne of old, Nicks is a copy of R Wayne currently,  Griffi is Griff....      and DaR is ...    just a guy.    One injury from being off this team.

I think Moncrief really needs to be on the field ready or not.

In Luck's first year, he was victimized by defenders just bleeding through the line. Now, he seems to be victimized more by coverage. you can see him going through his entire progression tree and ending up with squat.

No he's not. The last throw he had in Denver he had TY running wide open to the end zone yet he locked on Reggie, and well you know the rest

Tell me guys, why in the 1st place Colts wants to be run 1st offense in this passing league?? What is the point?

We have QB, WRs,TEs,RBs to be high scoring passing offense, but no.. we stubbornly wanna "out mucsle" opponents.

At the same time we throw Luck`s precious early years and talent out of the window to become profilic passer which in turn would give us almost a free pass to playoffs for years to come. THIS IS PASSING LEAGUE.

We really have to get rid of Pep and maybe even Pagano. Im so salty that Arians got the job from Cards. Good for Bruce ofc, what a nice guy, but as a big time Colts fan this sucks and Pep/Pagano might be the reason Luck never ever reaches his potential, loses his confidence etc.

Win or not vs. Eagles, or 11-5 season or not, but i am not happy with direction Pagano/Pep is trying to go. All the rules says Pass the freakin ball, even if u dont complete, chances are defense gets flagged and chains are moving.

Passing game needs rhythm to work, running game doesnt. And when we almost always run-run, Luck and Co has all the pressure to complete those 3-medium-longs without rhythm. We all have seen climpses of greatness, when Luck and Co comes from behind with no huddle and its nothing to do with Pagano/Pep.

Andy add up the "first Q" scores of the last few "meaningful" games ...     It is MORE than troubling..  The Colts are getting DRILLED early.

This team has a real problem in it's preparation.  I just think this staff is a bunch of coordinators.  Not one "true" HC>

JMO of course...

Man, these overreaction threads just don't stop.

So you can think of one example of a Colts receiver getting open deep and that means I'm wrong, that we aren't getting enough deep licks?

I'm not sure I follow your mindset on this.

Though I'm going to share your opinion of Luck in this regard. I'm seeing this guy lock in on a single receiver at such a rate, it's almost unusual to see him looking off safeties, going through his progression naturally or otherwise NOT succumbing to tunnel vision quarterbacking.

I never said you were wrong, I just don't see him going through his progressions very often if at all, however your last paragraph is spot on. He locks on receivers way too much, and just hasn't shown the ability to throw them open either.

All QB's, no matter how "great", have something bad going against them. A habit, a lacking, something missing from their skillset. To point these things out is OK and shouldn't cause fans to jump to the players defense without thought.

Is it possible that we're beginning to key in on what will someday be seen as Luck's "bad tendency"? Most of us in Indy seem to be keen on his penchant for overthrowing receivers, even though nationally I've heard very little reference to this. But more crucial would be this tendency to lock-in on a primary and not let it go soon enough.

I'll remind everyone right now of a part of this tendency that has shown itself two weeks in a row now, in two losing efforts, in regard to what happened with our last gasp play of the game.

Both in Denver and last Sunday at Indy, the game funneled it's way down to one make-or-break play. 4th down passes to Reggie Wayne. He didn't even look anywhere else, it was Reggie or nothing. Now.....I love me some Reggie, but you just can't do that. A QB can't decide he's throwing to a given receiver before the snap. You just can't, and that's 2 weeks in a row where I've witnessed this happening at the most crucial moment.

I said I would blow if I read another one of these....but I just decided against it!

This is not on Luck, it is not on Pep, it is not on Pagano or Manusky.  I am sorry.  Did I forget Richardson?

This is a team sport.  You win as a team and you lose as a team.  It looked good at 20-6 did it not?

This team WILL open it up more if and only if Reggie, TY, and Nicks get off of the ball.  They were slow to react, and TY cut off at least 2 routes.  He is also being manhandled past the ball 'refs.'  GRRR.

I am going to go to practice and prepare for the Jags as if it were the Super Bowl.  But them again as coach I would prepare as if EVERY game was the Super Bowl!!! :blueshoe:  :blueshoe:  :blueshoe:

Andrew Luck is a supremely gifted athlete.  My question is: How long will it take him to unlearn all **** poor coaching has taught him (directly or indirectly) -- if ever? He's in a state of panic back there, and has lost all gracefulness in his game. BTW, the lack of gracefulness may be associated with all the injuries.

"The incompetent are blissfully unaware of their own incompetence, and cannot see the true competence in others. The highly competent often wrongly assume that others are equally competent as they are." -- Dunning Kruger Effect.  Until the Colts realize the problem, nothing will ever change. The Colts will ultimately descend to mediocrity, even with excellent but unrealized talent on the field.

I think to a certain point the OP is right on.  The coaches are not game planning to Luck's strengths.  Arians used Luck properly, and the stats reflected it, although his interception percentage was a bit higher than what we'd like.  When you have the best potential QB in the league, you use him...for passing the ball.  Instead, the focus is on developing the run game and screen plays.  How well did the screens work for us last week?  Yet we did it over, and over and over with the same result each time.

What made Peyton Manning great was we used our run game to set up the play action pass.  This current coaching staff seems to have forgotten that the PAP ever existed.  We have some great tight ends.  How many catches did they have in the last game?

Sure, we ran for about 150 yards or so, but we also lost.  We've lost our ability to run down the field and score when we need to, why is that?  IMHO, when you don't use a skill, the skill starts to diminish.

Some things I have noticed in watching Luck this year that I hadn't seen in him last year:  He seems to be staring down his receivers, has anyone else noticed that he's doing that also, or is it just me?

I think Luck has the potential to be the best quarterback in the league, and equal to Peyton Manning's career, with perhaps a few more SuperBowl victories.  Under Pep's control though, I think he is destined to become pedestrian, and just average, with occasional glimpses of the greatness he could achieve under the correct scheme.

It looked good at 20-6 did it not?

No, it did not.

Any way I can get you to venture a guess at what Luck's production was at 20-6? It....wasn't good, save for a few TD's that were just dump-offs to Ahmad. Aside from that, his stats through the first 3 QTRS were abysmal, as in, absolutely in the basement.

Luck has not played well this year, despite what some ignorant fantasy owners may think.

It did look good at 20-6.  It also looked good at 27-20.  We win if we get a field goal there simple as that.  Instead, a hold not called and a pick.

I never said Luck was good in this game or the last one either..  I said it was not all on Luck, Pep, etc.  Quote the whole post if you want to make a snide comment to me.

BTW...I do not play fantasy football....never will and I never have played Madden.  I analyze football.  Picking on the wrong person here as you already 'should know.'
