Mike Mayock looks at Eagles' Offense....

....  and it's pretty impressive...   even scary....

He's looking at Philly's week 1 game vs. Jacksonville.     Where the Eagles trailed 17-0 at the half.

And turned around scored 35 unanswered points in the 2nd half powered by their fantastic running game.     They didn't abandon the run game just because they trailed big at the half.

Enjoy Mayock's breakdown....

One important area to remember....  part of the Eagles magic is that even when they're trailing, they don't panic.    They know that by running the next play in roughly every 12 seconds,   the defense will be exhausted and confused by the 2nd half.

No lead is safe with these guys.   You've got to keep scoring and never stop.

Jags don't really have a top notch defense nor were the Eagles down by as much as we were. Having said that the Eagles were doing their thing, and caught them off guard a few time like with the 4 and 1 run. Smart move to catch the unaware. The Colts will have to be on their toes... and the one thing that worries me are those pesky short throws to the backs. Our o-lines both have their share of problems.

I watched the whole game. The Eagles were bad in the first half. Then Jacksonville collapsed in the second half.

Even though they mounted a nice comeback, never felt like Philadelphia's offense was "scary".

I am more worried about our offense bogging down, than the Eagles offense.

the thing about that u come up a team that can score there defence wont last either and if u run plays that quick and go 3 and out can only put you in a deeper hole and tire your defence out even more. theres pros and cons to running it i dont like running plays that quick think it hurts your team in long run

Their receivers are not the greatest.

And their offensive line is banged up, so hopefully we dont let them gash us running the ball.

One thing however, we certainly do need to be concerned about containing their punt returner.

We could see a lot of Toler matched up against Maclin, and we can win that battle. That said, the Eagles best WR is not lined up against our best corner. We will need to occasionally double Maclin with safety help, preferably Mike Adams. The Eagles would be silly to line Maclin up on the left side, because if Davis is on his game then he could easily shut down left side of the field.

The match-up we will have to do a better job at is against Ertz and Celek. In my opinion, holding the Eagles tight ends in check, is the key to winning this game.

When it was at the point of 10-0, maybe even 17-0 I wasn't cool about the fact that we abandoned the running game in Denver, so kudos to Philly for sticking with their convictions. Of course I will say it's a little bit easier to do when you are playing an anemic offense like the Jags, versus remaining with your convictions versus the #1 offense in NFL history.

One thing to keep in mind about the difference in situations here, Philly was playing Jacksonville, not really a high powered offense, we were playing Denver. We HAD to give up the running game at that point and get as many chances as possible to score, since Denver has the ability to score at will and has shown it in the past. Jacksonville really does not have that ability so Philly could run it and burn some clock without the fear of Jacksonville running up the score or going score to score with them.

I could be wrong but as I watched some replay clips on NFL Network of the Julius Thomas touchdowns. Manusky in my opinion does a bad job scheming things up, and it doesn't appear that he fully utilizes all of his personnel or somebody just didn't do their job.  The touchdown that happened against Landry(other than it being a bad match up in the first place) it appeared to me that more could have been done to make that play harder to stop.  There was a linebacker(Werner or someone) that is just standing there not assigned to anyone and there were no routes crossing his face.

I'm wondering to myself why this linebacker is not used to protect against the slant and force Thomas into a fade route which would allow Landry to use his body to force Thomas out of bounds.  Or even if he had to jump up to attempt to knock the ball out he could use his arm strength as an advantage.  On the first touchdown as I went back and watched things a little further, Landry could have been used to cut off Thomas crossing route.  I do see that Montee Ball was kind of coming out of the backfield some towards Landry, but Landry ends up running off somewhere not covering Ball or Thomas. I'm not sure if that was a blown assignment or what happened there to be honest.

I hope we use our personnel and scheme better for this Eagles game.

I think it is a bit unfair to blame Manusky for the mismatch with Landry and Thomas. I give that one to Peyton for hurrying up and forcing that situation.

Our defensive style is to more often than not, sell out to stop the run, and play man coverage. Sometimes it will bite us, but if executed properly, we will be a team that teams do not want to run against.

From my viewpoint, we have 2 basic defensive fronts. We use the 3-4, with 5 on the line, and we play nickel with 4 on the line and 2 linebackers. It really is not that extravagant of a defense. The whole premise puts pressure on our corners to play well. There are many corners in the league who are not asked to do half as much as we ask of ours.

I like the strategy, but I also realize that I am in the minority with that opinion.

If the Eagles can run the ball on us for good gains any time they want and/or they can break 3 or more very long gainers (30+ yards) on us they will win, but like Romney they have a narrow path to victory in this game, and running successfully is their only path.

I feel confident the Eagles can't stop the Colts offense and the Colts will put up plenty of points, but more importantly, Foles will be sacked multiple times and will be under pressure all night if they are in obvious passing situations repeatedly and that's because our coverage will be great.

If Manusky was not dumb enough to put Landry down there to begin then you would have a point, Manusky knows full well that we don't have a good cover safety yet he does dumb stuff like that anyway but since he put Landry on him then Manusky has to have Landry try to jam him to give Landry some form of fighting chance, Just lining him up on Thomas is giving Thomas free yards or more

How is it Manusky's fault when Peyton did not allow us to substitute?

I will have to look at that particular play again but just because we could not sub does not give Manusky an excuse to call for Landry to be put on Thomas, For some reason or another I can not access any of the game from week 1 on Rewind, They are doing maintenance or something else is going on on my end or something but I will look it up when I can to double check

If you are talking about the touchdown where Thomas lined up wide right, then it happened right after the 2 minute warning of the first half, so we had time to set up. I am not sure who we could have lined up on Thomas, and stopped him though. Covering talented tight ends is our weakness on defense, and we could not find any way to cover Thomas.

Peyton put the pressure on us several times and did not allow us to substitute. We even got flagged for it once in the game.

Right before the 2 minute warning or after yes, I see it, There was also another play where Freeman was lined up in Man coverage also on Thomas out wide, As to the play where Landry was on Thomas wide right I understand our limitations on covering someone like Thomas (Or actually much of the league has those same limitations when trying to cover someone as athletic and quick as him) but at the same time I thought Manusky could have tried somebody else such as Vontae or Mike Adams....Do I think that would have worked....No.....Its very unlikely but at the same time I'd take my chances with a cover corner who plays with better technique or a better cover safety then Landry....Again that's not to say it would have yielded a different result....I doubt it would have...But its better then giving the Broncos a free touchdown......I mean in all honesty if your going to put Landry down there to cover in Man then just don't put anybody down there at all because your going to get the same result either way unless Thomas inexplicably drops the ball and that may happen 1 time out of a 100 balls on that play if were lucky.

I agree that Mike Adams would have been a better option. I believe that Davis stays at RCB because he excels there.

I have given this some thought, and I think our best option to cover these hybrid WR/TE's could be to use Toler, and have a safety close enough to help make a tackle if needed.

I know this thread is talking about the Eagles offense but I've been thinking a lot today about different types of plays to take advantage of our offensive personnel come tomorrow night that could expose the Eagles and I think maybe using a Play action Jet Sweep in Eagles territory could work to take advantage of the Eagles speed on defense, Just line up in 10 personnel (4 wr's, 1 RB)...preferably Bradshaw because he accelerates quicker) play action to Bradshaw while lining up Hilton as the Y WR sending him in motion....To throw a real wrinkle into the play call for the rb (Bradshaw in my scenario) to run the Counter Run...I know its probably hard for some to envision that in there minds eye.......Thoughts? A very similar play could be done using 12 personnel and TY as Flanker Receiver
