alex smith signs a 4 year 68 mil

I see the Alex Smith hate-club is still alive and kicking.

No matter how bad he's made you look for how many straight years now?   Three?

Two years with SF and last year with KC.     All three to the playoffs.

And $17 Mill is market value for a QB of his ability.

It is mind boggling the level of hate that is dumped on the guy.....

All that said,  KC is due to backslide this year.   They've let a lot of talent get away.   And the team will suffer.    So, if KC doesn't make the playoffs this year -- which I don't think they will -- then you can be right back here next year with the same nonsense.

Embarrassing.

Good for Smith. He has been putting up very good numbers and wins for the last 3 seasons.

Yeah, true. Throughout his career the guy has changed offenses more than he has his underwear. I'm just surprised he got this much.

I'm sure he's ready to go out there and continue proving his critics wrong.

He's a game manager. Not a top 10, even 15 QB and way overpaid. He is very easily replaceable. Anyone who can throw a screen pass or a slant or hand the ball of to Charles can start for them. They have talent on the roster but will never win a SB with smith. If you switch him and Luck, KC probably wins 2-3 SB in next 5 years and Colts probably don't make the playoffs(only way they would is bc AFC south is so bad).

Hey it's right under the top tier quarterbacks.. I think Romo and Cutler both make more than that and Smith has had more success than both.

Well Romo is a far better QB than Smith and Cutler is comparable to Smith. I think Romo is being payed appropriately but these guys who aren't top 12 quarterbacks are getting paid way too much.

If you win games you're going to get your money. Romo may be the better QB but Alex Smith is the more consistent game manager\winner.

Agreed Smith gets little respect after the slow start in SF. People forget what a mess SF was maybe because of their history or because they are really good again but they were a complete mess that's how you end up with the number 1 overall pick.

Then he had a different OC every year his first 5 yrs.

There was the Mike Singletary coaching stint. Guy didn't have a chance.

He has certainly turned it around. . He might have trouble this year they did nothing to upgrade the WR's unless there is a sleeper in there. Bowe seems to be on the downward side and Avery is adequate but that's not scaring anyone.

It will be interesting to see how quickly DeAnthony Thomas can carve out a role in the offense.

Agreed KC will have a harder time making the playoffs this year SD is going to be the challenger to Denver this year I believe.

How cares....   he was asked to lead a team and that's what he did.

$17 Mill per year is the going rate for a solid mid-level QB....   Cutler 18 Mill and Dalton got 17/18 Mill...    that's the rate for guys like that.

And if they didn't?    Then what?

Look at all the QB's in the last 2 drafts....   not one of them a clear and obvious franchise QB.   They're incredibly rare.

And the QB's for the 2015 draft may be better,  but none are Luck-level, or even close.

The market is what the market is.    Smith is a solid guy.

The hate for him here is completely irrational.

Alex Smith went 11-0 against teams at .500 and below.

He went 0-6 against teams above .500

No excuse, that Chiefs team played one of the three easiest schedules in the league last year.

Romo on the other hand has had a 13-3 season, and 11-5 one, and was doing pretty good for himself until Jerry decided to get rid of Wade Phillips.

We'll see how the Chiefs perform this year when over half of their schedule is not teams that were below .500 the previous year.

I'm not expecting the Chiefs to have a good year.    I think they may have lost the most talent of any team during Free Agency.

And their draft was not rated highly.

And they've had some key injuries already.

So,  I don't expect much.    But that doesn't mean it will be Smith's fault.

Doesn't matter. Smith made the playoffs and Romo didn't. Smith beat the teams he was suppose to.. Romo didn't.

So.....   if I understand you correctly,   the Alex Smith numbers you site are from last year --  2013.

But you get to cherry pick the two best years that Tony Romo ever had to say he's better.

Seriously?    Somehow that strikes you as a fair comparison?

And besides,  who compared Smith with Romo?     All I said was he got a contract that was fair to his ability.    And that there was no reason for all the Smith-hate that has existed here since the day I joined more than two years ago.

NFL.com is saying 4 years at $17MM per year, with $45MM guaranteed. Using Smith as a "yardstick", what is Andrew Luck worth now? Five years, $150MM?...or just sign him to a 10-year deal for a humongous pile of cash and be done with it?

Need some perspective here I think. Luck has not been putting up elite numbers the last two seasons. Smith has been the better QB of the two the last two seasons.

That is just last year. Smith had great records and stats in SF and beat above .500 teams. Not sure Romo is really your best comparison here given he has not made the playoffs in three years.

Such is how the NFL works now folks, Congrats to Smith. We can debate whether or not his production is worth that money or not (Its not) but before he arrived and Andy Reid arrived that team was just not very good. I personally think they could win with Murray but what they can do possibly and what THEY ARE doing NOW is vastly different, your winning now with Smith so you keep him, Its basically a 3 year deal, If Murray shows he can handle the offense and keep in mind he did not play well in the preseason......Though the Chiefs needs some better receivers

alex smith cant win you games unless he has a supporting cast. look at what happen when the chiefs defense started to get hurt. they went 2-5. chiefs didnt even beat anyone worth mentioning

you do realize luck has thrown for the most yards in nfl history by a QB in his first two years

Yards are a volume stat and one I don't out a ton of stock in. His completion percentage after two years is still below 60 and his TD/INT ratio needs to improve. He did a nice job last year of that until the playoffs came and then it was pick city.

Whatever. Smith has been the more efficient QB. At this point, I expect Luck to make that jump to the elite level in the next 2-3 years his ceiling is sky high but I do wonder if our coaching staff will hold him back. I don't have a lot of faith in Pagano and even less in Pep.
