Burley to Seahawks for 6th round pick (merge)

Sorry, I didn't realize this was being discussed in the 53 man roster thread.

Yeah it got some attention in the other thread, but I think this is worthy of its own thread.

And while I like Burley and thought he'd make it over Purifoy, I think getting a 6th for him is a good deal.

This guy will probably be a star.

Nick Burley...His name even has a better ring to it now that he is a part of that Seahawks secondary. Good that the Colts got a draft pick out of it but If the Hawks saw something they liked there my bet is that they probably end up getting the better side of this deal down the road.

I'm fine with this..

I just hope Sheldon Price is gone for good now

why is that?  I hope Price makes the PS again.  I thought it seemed like he played well in the preseason with the exception of the one TD given in the Bengals game.

btw, anyone else notice how the story on NFL.com makes it sound like the colts acquired Burley from the seahawks for a 6th round pick? lol

I think Burley was the better cover man but not by enough to compensate for what Purifoy brought to our return game.

This would be my assessment too and I don't think it was that close on coverage Burely was clearly better right now.   Purifoy has huge upside on D just raw and could play S too. When it came to special teams play Purifoy was miles ahead even if he isn't the PR.

Burley will end up being a good CB Purifoy could be special it was a risk but can't keep them both. No way either made it back to the PS  and we look good at CB with Davis Toler Butler and Gordy.

Well played Grig's that 6th could help us move up to grab someone next year. I just like the idea of having more draft picks finally than we are supposed to that's the way to build and Grig's has an eye for late round talent or so it would appear

Don't forget that Burley had a year n NFL practice squads and the other guy is a rookie when you compare their cover skills.

While hardly a blockbuster, it's a very interesting trade.  You probably can't negotiate an outright 6th in trade unless you are completely committed to keeping him, and you probably can't let him go unless you like Purifoy as well or better.

Part of me thinks you keep a player worth a 6th before he ever plays, and part of me is ecstatic to have the pick for a player that likely is just a journeyman.

unless you can back that up with any kind of reasoning at all then I will give exactly 0 credence to your opinion.  but thanks for playin

I shake my head at adjectives used that seem to be thrown out to describe players and their abilities. Anything less than what a fan wants is deemed as "sucks" or "horrible.

A horrible player could be considered the guy who couldn't make it into the college game....or perhaps the guy who couldn't make it to the NFL.....but any player who makes an NFL roster, is beyond sucking or horrible IMO. It's like saying Andy Dalton sucks.

I had convinced myself that Burley is a rookie. He's technically not. He was a practice squad guy for the Jags last year. No real game experience, but there's a little bit of book on him so far.

Someone else mentioned that Purifoy is two years younger, and his scouting reports are more impressive than Burley's, which suggests he has more upside and potential.

Roster management made it necessary to choose between the two. If it were purely based on how they played in preseason, I think Burley is the guy. But when you consider all the different variables, I can understand having a higher projection on Purifoy. And if you assume that this trade means the Seahawks wanted Burley, not Purifoy, then the decision becomes pretty simple. Even if they had been committed to keeping him, and they did like him better than Purifoy, straight up, that conversation with the Seahawks changes the dynamic. Especially since, even though Burley was better, he wasn't head and shoulders better, and he was never used as a returner.

I'd like to know exactly how this trade came to be. Who initiated, what other players were discussed, etc. That's part of the reason why, even though I think Hard Knocks is an intrusion, I'd love for the Colts to do it. This would have been a great year to get some behind the scenes details.

I think the concern some here have with the trade is that the Seahawks have a solid recent history of taking lightly regarded, not highly drafted players and turning them into very good cornerbacks.

Sherman and Browner are just two.   I'm not sure they've spent a high round pick on a corner since Carroll got there.

But that hasn't prevented Seattle from getting great corner play.

So,  losing Burley may not seem like a loss today.....    but it might a year from today.

Just sayin.....

I think we would have kept them both in absence of such a good trade offer and cut either T. Austin or Tipton.  It was opportunistic, and provided a good, convenient roster management alternative, but I don't think it was either or between Burley and Purifoy, and I think that is why we got the 6. There were plenty of ways to keep 10 DBs

I agree that it would be great to observe how it actually came about....

I get that.

But I'll say, I don't think the Seahawks have some special gift for turning average corners into really good corners. I think those guys worked their butts off to improve their game.

And if the Seahawks DO have some special gift with corners, then Burley will be a better player for them than he would have been for us.

I think we had to keep Austin, at least for the time being. Holmes and Harrison are both questionable at the moment.

Tipton seems like a little bit of a luxury, but if that luxury was made possible because we thinned out the corners, I would think we'd be keeping an offensive lineman or an extra safety, not an extra RB. Five of our 10 OL have injury questions. I think they prioritized RB depth because of Bradshaw.

I don't know any of this. It's speculation and conjecture. But that's why I'd like to have been a fly on the wall...

If the Seahawks call you for a defensive player, any defensive player... Then you should probably keep that player. IMHO

Ryan Freakin Grigson amd Chuck freakin Pagano. Clown show

You are giving the Seahawks too much credit and the Colts too little ... you have no idea what the circumstances were and how the roster cut down played into the situation.  I have been openly critical of many of Grigson's decisions, but you seem to find something negative about everything the team does, every player, every decision, etc .... I am often cynical, but you are the epitome of negativity.

So I'm supposed to lie and say I always liked Laron Landry. Never liked him. Should I say I always liked Trent Richardson? Never liked him. Thought it was utter stupidity to draft him top 5. But thought it was dumber to trade a 1st rnd pick for him after you saw he wasnt anything special in the pros. Rolling ball of knives... Plastic butter knives.

I liked the TY Hilton pick. Liked the Jones signing. Loved the Nicks signing. I was calling for that when it was unpopular.

But as many people on this thread have mentioned, if there was a choice between Burley and (in this case) Purifoy, they would have gone with Purifoy due to his potential and the fact he played well in the preseason ( and frankly if cut- Purifoy would have been more likely to be claimed.)

My point being, although I respect your opinion, I disagree. I think it was a good move by Grigson and Pagano. I would argue if we released Burley- then he would have been claimed by the Seahawks or someone else anyway- so we would have lost Burley and lost out on a 6th round pick ( might not seem a lot but could be later used to trade up or for a decent player.)

Also, in regards to about keeping a defensive player the Seahawks want, well perhaps- but we may end up winning this trade so to speak. E.g. our Preseason MVP Casear Rayford from last year- who we traded was released by the Cowboys- this could easily apply to Burley and the Seahawks. They aren't perfect-they will have a few misses- like we have or any other team.

I think you should keep as many dbs as you can. Is there a maximum the league sets per position? Does Harnish have a roster spot? Trent Richardson?

Havili? Well those are 3 people I'd rather keep a db over.

I still don't get the Harnish experiment. If he's playing, we're screwed.

I'd just like to add, your post was so refreshing. You disagreed with me, but was respectful. No childish insults. You sir make believe in the future of this nation. Its still good people here and there. Thank you and have a nice labor day.

Harnish is not on the roster ( thank god)

I think Havili doesn't count against the roster yet (PUP)

I'm still in the camp that believes Richardson can and will improve a lot.

overall I liked the choices made yesterday. The only questionable one was Thomas Austin. But in regards to DBs, I would look at Craig Loston and Ed Reynolds for safety and Leon McFadden for corner.

I have to agree...

Although he has looked pretty good this preseason, one thing to remember about Marcus Burley, is his career history.

He came into the league in 2013 and was cut by four teams. Even when he was on a teams roster, it was only practice squad participation.

We may be over reacting just a bit, with the failure of the Burley trade.
