Pagano's Work in Progress

Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano was asked about the team's running game and he said, "it's going to be a work in progress the whole season."

Per ESPN

I'd lay heavy odds on we pick Boone or Incognito up after a very public remark like this one. Sounds like even he has little faith in the O Line.

Boone is a younger more expensive version of Incognitio if you look closely and he has only had one good year. I'd take Incognitio on a one year rental

at least with Incognito you don't have to give up anything but cash to get him.

To the original quote I think this is a case off seeing what you want to see. I see nothing in there to signal we are or aren't going to make a move. A work in progress could just as easily mean letting the young guys on the roster develop over the course of the season.

Exactly. Then next years draft we draft every Alabama interior lineman

Colts to the super bowl next year! :cheer:

I'd trade a 5 for Boone

SF wouldn't take a 5 for starters but if you got him then you'd sign him for the 5-6 Million a year he is looking for based off of one good season in 2012 he ranked 40 the among G's last year.

You realize alcohol abuse and related issues are the reason he went undrated but giving away draft picks and signing him for multiple years and big money sounds like a good idea based on 1 year of good play sounds like a good idea to you?

Or you think he is coming over for a 5th to play for the 2 M he is already getting from SF. He is going be over paid hopefully by someone else. Rent Incognitio for a year develop what we have already and draft someone that doesn't have an injury history  next year.

Pro Football Focus’ advanced charting stats are torn on Boone. In 2013, he only graded out at negative-2.1 (subscription required), 40th best in the league.  In 2012, however, Boone’s grade of 24.2 had him as the third-best guard in all of football, behind only Marshal Yanda and Evan Mathis.

I'm hoping Thorton comes along and we can manufacture a C from what we have maybe Holmes can stay healthy.

Yes take their best interior lineman who wasn't playing hurt the entire yr before we drafted him we should be in good shape. Finding an adequate C should not be rocket science How many yrs have we been trying now? The O line is close I hope

I'd agree if we were getting Incognito from three or four years ago.  I'm all for bringing anyone in that helps the line.  I'm not sure he's an upgrade.  It seems he was struggling a bit last year.

Definitely bring him in for a tryout though.  All the arguments against it are (IMHO) juvenile.  The team has a strong core, he's not going to destroy any morale.  The Stanford group are professionals.  They won't hold anything against a guy who has apologized and will help the team.  One team meeting ends all that.

It all comes down to - can he still play?

I believe a work in progress means more of finding out what running plays work with the inexperienced line and with which RB. Anywhere from Trent being the "cow bell" back, to a highly tag team approach of Bradshaw in passing situations and Trent short yardage/goal line plays. Being able to pull Mewhort, or not based on his learning curve, etc. More of seeing what the line allows.

Bell cow? this is a cow bell and then there is "more" cow bell. It's what is needed.morecowbell.jpg

I hope the young guys can keep luck safe while they show us if they can cut it. if they are not good and don't develop we can try some new guys next year. maybe someday we will have an elite o-line. imo we will not be a top 1 or 2 team until we have an elite o-line

I see nothing in his comments that suggest either of those moves as pending.

I would take your heavy odds.

IMO, this is just coach speak. What part of any team is NOT a work in progress?

^^^^^^^This is why we have scouting, the Combine, OTAs, Mini-camps, Training camp, Preseason games, and cuts to 75 then 53 players.  These equal work in progress.  There is no one in the league as a coach, GM or janitor that cannot learn something every day.

This is why we also practice during the season and analyze film, and go out and play...and learn from mistakes!!!  OK my inner Lombardi was coming out there,  Lets play football Ladies and Gentlemen!!!! :colts:  :colts:  :coltslogo:  :coltslogo:  :pass:  :pass:  :yahoo: !!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2013 Seattle defense was not as good as the 2008 Steelers D, nor the 2000 Ravens D nor the '85 Bears D. There were 2nd in TDs allowed and 7th in rushing yards allowed per game

They still have work to do.

That TD stat can't be correct. Their highest points allowed was 34 (Colts)

Every other game they played was basically a blowout

I bet on neither one of those two.  Boone is prohibitively expensive, and Incognito prohibitively explosive.

Strong core vs strong attitude... what will budge... or will there be fights when alpha male leader takes on alpha male jerk?  He will fight on practice field, playing field, in locker room, and off site.  He can't and wont stop/change. In fact he's done it all his college and pro career.  I don't think he has the mental and physical edge to play well unless he acts out this way. Folks here think as soon as he puts on the Shoe that he gets a halo too.  It's wishful thinking, and you have no argument that holds water that he can/will change. He never has through this date. Ask yourself this, why is he still on the outside looking in, because the folks that makes these signing decisions want to improve their teams.  And he is available. What is stopping them?  In addition, I think he is on the steep slope downward in playing career/age.

The bolded part is the answer to your question.  If you think he's the only guy who fights, gets in people's faces, uses anger to motivate himself, or even plays dirty, than you're not facing reality.  Just watch any season of Hard Knocks.

I never said he'd put on a halo when he got here.  I wouldn't want him to change his nasty attitude.

The only thing that would concern me is is he can still play.  I really think all that 'team chemistry killer' stuff is media talk.  You didn't hear too many ex teammates complaining about him, right?

Did he do something to you personally? You seem to have some personal vendetta against him.

He is "on the outside looking in" because teams wanted to see what they had before they took any risks, and the overly PC media makes some teams more hesitant.

I don't think most believe he is going to "get a halo" ... he is just a 6 month rental.  I personally think he can make it 6 months and if he can't you cut him. This would be a low risk move.

You mean Dolphins team mates, where he was on the leadership council? LOL   Find me supportive team matesquotes  from his other (prior) teams where he was jettisoned... and I might take notice....

I have boundaries.  Boundaries for myself, and boundaries for others.  He gets more leeway on them vs. others because of the profession he is in, but  he oversteps even those in my eyes as well.  Anybody or any team that supports him wholeheartedly drops down on my respect level.  Just because NFL is in there doesn't diminish how Character, Trust, integrity, and Moral play inthe person/player; at least in my mind.

Damn well said. I applaud loudly.
