Colts should have traded for Mankins

He was just traded today to Tampa for a backup TE and probably a 6th round pick. We could have easily fixed our interior woes on the OL with trading for him. Then next offseason, cut Cherilus and his big contract, and play Mewhort at RT.

Mankins is still only 32 and has at least 3 more good years in him. Could have instantly helped our run game and possibly propelled this OL to be superbowl contenders.

But we wouldn't have to give up a pick.

Yeah but a 4 isn't enough to make that up to me, draft picks are overrated when talking about star players. A 1st round pick is worth twice what a first rounder who has reached expectations is in a trade, that's ridiculous. Look at Vontae- drafted in the first, played as well as they hoped, and was shipped off for a full round later pick.

It was a 4th rounder, and the Bucs have been DESPERATE for guards. Yes, more desperate than us. And it would have cost us a TE with proven ability, not a project like Swoope or a deep reserve like Doyle or Saunders. Either Fleener or Allen, for sure.

So, good for the Bucs. Weird for the Pats (guess Gronk isn't ready, but who is gonna play guard now?) Not a good potential move for us.

I think we could have talked them out of a TE being needed by giving up a 3rd. Feels weird having all first 3 picks intact for the first time in 3 years :).

I think they wanted a productive TE. Maybe we could have talked them down to Doyle, but I doubt it.

I don't think a fourth or fifth round pick is sooo valuable that it wouldn't be worth it. This is weird on the part of the Pats, but maybe BB knows something Lovie doesn't.

Not weird at all if you consider a few things.

1) History of similar moves - see Richard Seymour.

2) Always better to get rid of a player one too soon than one year too late.  I am sure he has actuarial type info on when production for someone of Mankin's age and position starts to decline.

3) Have a trading partner who is desperate

4) Maybe it also speaks to Gronk's early availability.

Nah. Gos has been solid on the RT spot. Why cut a guy who is actually playing well on the OL? There's three spots in the center to worry about, and you're advocating cutting someone not in one of those three...

LG Is important, but I don't think Logan would have been a solution. Very much like the Ravens signing Deion Sanders, that could've been a trade and 10 mil wasted on a guy who was past his prime.

I'm more interested in seeing the youngsters develop, rather than continue to shift and change the line every time Luck is sacked (Which some members here seem to want to do).

The OL is going to take a year or so to develop- that's just a fact. Castonzo and Cherilus are definitely staying.

If I were to cut anyone on the offensive line, it would be Thornton- but it's still too early to judge him, as he's only had one year in the league and he was out of position.

The question that has to be asked is why would the Pats trade him?  Behind him they have a guy who was an UDFA from 2013 and a rookie 6th round pick.  Not that those guys can't be good, but I doubt if either is as good as Mankins is right now... unless Mankins has declined a lot this year.

TE desperate! Could make another move lots of money now available. maybe Incogneto? I know spelled wrong!

Fair enough and I totally agree about the desperation of the Bucs, but I don't think Brady's window to win again this year or next is increased by this move, assuming BB isn't getting one over on Lovie.
