Hoyer just named Browns QB

Hoyer was just named the Browns starting QB for week 1 according to ESPN, Not exciting news because I don't expect the Browns to be in playoff contention but I was thinking Haslam would push Pettine to make Manziel the starter even after he flipped the bird

Right now two bad quarterbacks, no difference. The only difference would be attendance where everyone would want to see a Browns game if Manziel were playing, versus it being one of the worst games on your schedule if Hoyer starts. It turns a road game with Manziel to a premium ticket for opposing fans, that you'd never miss, for a game you'd scalp off to go to dinner with old Aunt Ida , if Hoyer starts.

Manziel isn't ready, it was so blatantly obvious that he doesn't know the playbook like Hoyer. Hoyer had some accuracy issues in the pre-season and a couple of huge drops. If he hits on those over throws and doesn't have the huge drops, the conversation looks more like "What took them so long to make this decision".

not only that but he was badly missing open receivers too...he was throwing grounders even Mike Pagel would be envious of.

Like This 100 times over. Manziel looked pretty bad and even though his athleticism somewhat makes up for his lack of knowing the playbook, it's not enough and not something that can be corrected in two weeks. The flipping of the bird was the icing on the cake, proving that Manziel still has maturity issues, the pressure of the NFL is still getting to him, and he's far from being a leader and gaining the respect of the locker room so far. Easy choice, maybe Manziel starts after the bye week.

They have three pretty rough games to start the season, then a bye week.  I think it's PIT, NO, and BAL.  I wouldn't throw a rookie into that either.  Let him spend a few more weeks learning, while Hoyer takes a pounding.

Edit:

Just confirmed their schedule:

at Blitzburgh    (PIT)

Bounty Town   (NO)

Felonville        (BAL)

Bye week

Curious for a fan's perspective...

Do you think the media is correct in speculating that the pressure has possibly gotten to Hoyer? I've really liked the guy since he was in NE and have been rooting for him. Maybe if he's able to stop looking over his shoulder he'll perform better on the field. I think he can win some games for you guys if he gets a shot.

Yeah it has gotten to him a bit, he looked shook coming into that first game and has been pressing. Lot's of overthrows and quite a few drops, (two of which would have been TD's).

Manziel's inability to set his feet, his footwork in general is terrible. When he does set his feet, he seems to drive the ball into the ground. I'm a LONG time Browns fan, they were my first team as a child growing up in rural Circleville, Ohio. I was actually born in Defiance, Ohio, so my Buckeye roots are strong.

Poor footwork, poor understanding of the offense. He's not even close to being ready.

He always seemed like a real solid guy here so I hope this morning's announcement helps him settle things down. Always thought he'd do well if he got a shot.

Exactly so he was learning the plays from somewhere, and I'm pretty sure Mike Sherman had a play book with Tannehill in Manziel's redshirt year he had to learn

During halftime they showed an interview of gruden and Manziel. Jon asked him to call a play from the browns playbook. Any play at all He looked lost. He finally got one out. If he is struggling that bad this late in the game, that doesn't bode well for the browns

Cam Newton said he same.. .     they just called "numbers" or something very simple at Auburn.

If I recall correctly....????

Auburn, Texas A & M, and the linked article mentioned Tim Couch at Kentucky; all didn't have playbooks.

Well...its the SE conference...you first have to have coaches and players who can read and write before you can have a playbook.:-)
