Irsay bashed for giving away cash?

Did anyone else hear Michael Willbon of ESPN say that Jim Irsay should NOT have been have been giving away $100 bills in light of his recent substance abuse troubles..?

I don't know where else he said it but on ESPN Chicago, he said that it seemed like he was trying to buy goodwill and giving away cash made him look crazy and unstable.

WHAT? Clearly they don't pay much attention to the Colts.

Irsay is always doing something line this...he's not acting crazy. he's always like that~!!

And he doesn't need to 'buy good will' in Indiana.. He may be unpopular with national media but he's fairly well liked here. ...I was just stunned...

A super rich guy who owns a team gives his fans $100 presents for showing up at training camp and somehow it doesn't look right???

Welcome to the NFL

Every other owner gets treated like Gods and worshiped, but Jim Irsay is the bad guy.

Never mind a guy like Kraft that spends an entire season exploiting his wife's death, and then hooking up with a girl young enough to be his grand daughter, no that's not bad but Jim Irsay is the bad guy.

Or Arthur Blank who is going to force the city of Atlanta pay higher taxes cause he's so cheap he don't want to spend on that new stadium that the Falcons do not need and they are already approving this.

Or what about Bud Adams and how he destroyed the legacy of a team with a lot of history down in Houston? They made sure we knew what a saint he was after he died, never mind all the Oilers fans that had to tear down their posters and give away their jerseys to charity after 1995.

I like Jim Irsay cause he at least has a sense of humor and don't pretend to be this "classy" saint that everyone glorifies over other NFL owners.

If it was any other owner, we'd hear how "classy" they are, but when Irsay does something, they don't care cause he don't fit that stereotype of high society that the rest of these old rich guys fit.

I support Jim Irsay as a Saints fan.

Exactly my thoughts.

I joined this website in May of 2012 and this is the first time I've seen Irsay do something like that.

THIS is the first time I've been embarrassed about Irsay.

Given the big picture and what he's facing and the timing of it all,  it was an INCREDIBLY STUPID and silly thing to do.

The visual was awful.

He really needs someone around him who he trusts to just say.....   "No,  don't do it.   Just don't do it."

It looked like a PR stunt.    It looked like he's trying to buy good will.     Even if he's done stuff like this before, he hasn't with the a possible suspension and fine hanging over his head.

It was just flat-out dumb.

I've said to other posters in other threads here before that I've never been embarrassed over anything that Irsay has done.   That changed when I saw the video of what he did.

I just wish he hadn't done it.    It's not the end of the world,  but while it may, or may not have bought good will with some of the locals,   it certainly didn't buy good will with anyone outside the Colts community.

Bad move, Jim.    Bad move.........

Oh......   back in mid-season form....  already.

Doesn't the Saints website have a fan page for you to barf all over?

Can't you just fart elsewhere?

There just doesn't seem to be a level low enough that you won't stoop to just so you can say what's on your mind.

Really,  you should fight that urge every day of your life.    You don't have the brains to back it up.........

Can't believe you have the nerve to call yourself Bogie....   the real Bogart is rolling over in his grave.....

I feel like your response is based on how you think other people will respond to it.

To me, this is no different than Irsay giving away money on Twitter, which he does all the time. In this case, he's celebrating fans who came out to support the team. The optics of it are tacky, but Irsay can be tacky. To me, this is in keeping with how he acts all the time.

I already commented on this in another thread, but I agree with Wilbon that the timing is just not good. I noticed in his video , The self- proclaimed Jim Irsay : Stewart of Colts History, that he was starting to try to rehabilitate his image. I will say he looked very good and healthy in the video which is a positive, and I hope he keeps clean. Handing out one hundred dollars when you are a billionaire , is kind of strange, in my opinion. My thoughts are if he just keeps a low profile after he receives his sanctions, it will pass like Ray Rice. The problem is, he will continue tweeting , and handing out hundred dollar bills, and the like. I guess it's just in his DNA.

You and I normally agree on most things.

I have to say,  I disagree here.    I was not, and I am not one bit embarrassed by this.    As I've stated before,  He has ALWAYS done things like this.  He has always been appreciative of the Fans and Very good and generous to them in return.

In the past I think he's handed out things like Jerseys,  which may be worth more than the $100 bills....  I am sure those acts were always viewed as a "kind gestures".

Always going to be different views...   I personally didn't see any harm in him making people happy at Camp.  :dunno:

He probably just saw his username and assumed the comment was terrible like 99% of his other comments.

There is bad blood between them I think, this isn't the first time I've seen a comment from NCF to Boogie and thought, "Damn dude, chill.."

As for Irsay, he'd be hated if he didn't give money (so selfish)

And he's hated when he does (what a show off)

Irsay can't win.

I think giving away money on twitter in some contest-like setting is different than walking around and handing out $100 bills.

As they say in the media,  the "optics" are just terrible.

And I think giving away money looks tacky as compared to say,  giving away an Andrew Luck jersey.   It just feels completely different to me.    Perhaps not to others here.

If I were Irsay's friend,  I would've said to him....   give away jersey's....   or give out money as part of some twitter-contest...   first to respond,  or first to get the answer right...   something like that...

But the visuals of a rich man handing out money just looks awful.   And doing it so close to when he's going to court on his pain killer charges makes the timing look even worse.

It may have been entirely innocent,  but from the outside --- to the non-Colts fan --- I think it looks poor.    And I don't think it looks good to the other 31 NFL owners, whose support Irsay could use....

It does look tacky, but in practice, it's the same as giving away a jersey. (By the way, I bet a lot of those people spent the money on merchandise that very day.) If it had been a voucher to get merchandise at camp or off the website or something, there would be no noise about it.

What it comes down to is that Irsay is sometimes tacky. I don't think it needs to go beyond that at all.

I agree, giving out jerseys, t-shirts, hats , sets a much better tone than hundred dollar bills. It just smacks of Rodney Dangerfield handing out dough in Caddyshack. Maybe though if he gave out hats, it would look like the kind you get with a free bowl of soup. Lol

I was watching this live as it happened, and I was just waiting to start hearing people comment about it and the optics.I was surprised I did not see an uproar right away about it and it took a day or two.

I agree with what he is facing and giving out $100's. Plus you had Rich Eisen going are those hondo's he is giving out?

I have had some time to think about it, and the only real problem I have with it is it reminds me of all the twitter antics late at night, and sometimes you think, what is he doing? Was he high when he was doing many of them. I don't know, but then I decided to get off my high horse and just say Jim is Jim, and at least he is doing something for the fans. He just loves to ingratiate himself to the fans, and that is OK! I prefer an owner like that!

Now flip the script one more time, and take those $100 bills, and imagine those were free pre-season tickets or season tickets. Now just think what everyone would of said. How great is that. He is so nice for doing that. Interesting how what he gave away, even though one is currency, and one is bought with currency can be viewed as so different!

I just hope he is happy and sober. If that is the case, God bless and do what you want!

Only in America can a billionaire be criticized for giving away money.

LOL

The man can't win to be honest......he has often been very generous with fans. And now in light of recent troubles he is going to be under a microscope for a while. Which is a shame since he is probably the coolest and most human owner in sports at times.

I must say, I'm not embarassed at all by Jim handing out money at training camp.  I follow him on Twitter and have sent in answers to a couple of his contests, altho I've never won  LOL.  But like others have said, he has done this before and has given money, tickets, merchandise away on twitter.  So Mr Irsay, keep it up, I love that you are our owner !!!

On PTI he mentioned Irsay has done it a couple times before, he just didn't like the timing of it, like it looked like he was trying to get back on the good side of some fans

I could buy they if Irsay had never done anything like this before but he does it all the time. I think this ESPN trying to make a non-story into a story.

No. A billionaire always irritates grudge folks in every corner of the world, no matter how generous he is.

I myself won't ever envy any wealth.

Perhaps you're right.....

I think the difference in our perspectives (and my apologies if I'm wrong....)  is that I think you're looking at it from the perspective of a Colts fan.    I think most every here is doing that.    And there's nothing wrong with that.

But I'm looking at it from a Big Picture national perspective.   I'm trying to see the view of those who are not members of Colts nation.     I think from their perspective,  it looks, as you put it..... tacky.

Either way....  Irsay has enough of an odd reputation that, for better or worse, it's not the end of the world.

I'd still rather have him as the owner of my favorite NFL team than most anyone else......

I'm personally embarassed for anyone who says they're embarassed about Irsay handing out money.

It was at training camp. Handing out money to fans of his franchise. He wasn't walking around downtown Indy just throwing bills at people.

"He should have just given out a jersey, or merchandise." Explain to me how that's any different. Do jerseys or merchandise not cost money?

"He should have done a contest." He did. If you were in the exact spot he was giving out money, you got money. Does the fact that I googled some Colts trivia make him giving away money that much different?

Get a grip. We don't always have to over analyze everything, and get "outraged and embarrassed."

He wanted to do something nice for fans, and people still complain. Unreal.

I'm glad to see some Colt fans get hundred dollar rebates after Indiana taxpayers financed 620 million of the 720 million cost of Lucas Oil Stadium. Maybe some of those crisp hundred dollar bills came from the stadium naming rights for 121.5 million, or the 3.5 million from non- football events. Where is Bisciotti with my hundred dollar bill for my tax dollars for Ravens stadium , and the obnoxious PSL's. I think Irsay is onto something here.

Just an observation but Colts fans sure have to spend a lot of time defending their owner's kooky actions. The number of threads on him alone this  past year would dwarf any other teams site for their respective owner.

Just an observation but I think that fans of other teams spend a lot of time on the colts website criticizing their owner.

As far as the money........that's just him. He does it for fun.  Have you ever given things away?  IT IS FUN.

And that's all it is.  He doesn't need to buy fans.......they already like him.

As far as how it looks to everyone else..........we just don't care.

It reminds me of how fans of other teams were highly criticle of the tribute to manning when he came back. And no matter how much we told you that, that is just how we do it here.........you still had hateful things to say about it.

So, I guess you all will continue to criticize and we'll continue to tell you what we think.

It's all good here.  We are different, our owner is different.........and that's fine with us.

Had a lot to get off your chest, huh? ;)   I didn't say that I was critical of him or him choosing to give away money. I actually like Irsay and the only time I ever really came down on him was his comments about Manning prior to the Colts/Denver game last year.

I just think you guys spend a lot of time discussing him because his actions are a bit out there. Does not make him a bad guy at all. Like I said, just an observation.
