Offensive Linemen

Costonzo and Chrilus are a given.

We have 8 offensive linemen that will be battling for a position at guard and center.

Lutz, 6'3" 290      rookie

Josh Walker, 6'5"  328 rookie

Hugh Thorton,  6'3"  336    2 years

Donald Thomas 6'4"  303   7 years    has he healed from injury?

Joe Reitz     6'7"   325   4 years

Jack Mewhort  6'6"  308  rookie

Lance Louis  6'3"   330  5 years

Khaled Holmes  6'3"  309 2 years

This is easily the heaviest O line the Colts have had in my memory.  The competition is going to be fierce and Colts fans have reason to believe that we may actually have an O line that can give our running backs some room to run.  I like our stable of RB's, Richardson, Bradshaw & Ballard.  If our Colts can run the ball when the other team knows we are gonna run the ball!!!!

Let the good times roll.

My ideal O line as of now: Castonzo, Thomas, Holmes, Mewhort, Cherilus. The battle for the guard spots will be the most interesting thing to watch this camp. Can thomas come back from his injury and be decent guard, or does thronton beat him out. Does Mewhort get into the first team or does a dark horse like Lance louis get the spot.

Very interested in whether Thomas starts out on the PUP.  If he does, I think Mewhort beats him out for the LG spot.  If Thomas makes it Day 1 of TC, then he's my favorite at LG.  IMO, Thornton and Louis are the two RGs, so a Thomas/Mewhort tandem of OGs doesn't make any sense to me...

Yeah don't forget about Harrison at Center! Guy has some talent! Still raw but played pretty darn good at Florida! Also the injuries Thomas sustained are not easy ones to come back from especially for an O lineman and I see him being eased in! Either way he goes from good starter to great backup, but my guess right now is...

LT Castonzo

LG Mewhort

C Holmes

RG Thorton

RT Cherilus

I seriously hope we can stay relatively healthy this year! This O line group has a chance to be a solid group! The Colts NEEEED a solid O line this year if they really want a chance at the Super Bowl! Here's to forgetting about last years awful line and moving on to this year! Go Colts!

Exactly my thoughts.

I still don't think Lance Louis is that good, and Mewhort takes Thomas' spot since I believe he'll start on PUP.

I hope FN Lutz makes the FN roster though.

I feel it would be a disappointment if Mewhort doesn't earn the start at Guard.

Depends on how Thomas plays out. If he's healthy then Thornton should be the other G seeing as how he has a season of experience in the NFL over Mewhort. But we'll see how it plays out

Being a Bears fan as well my friend, if Lance is healthy you might be pleasantly surprised .

Here's hoping, boss!!

He will make the team IMO ,may not start but will be an adequate backup in more than one position if he doesn't.Seems to me Grigson has made an effort not only to get quality, but with that versatility.Im stoked about prospects of this line.

I'm honestly not expecting much beside Cherlius and Thorton to produce. Thorton will be in his natural position at RG. Lance Louis and Donald Thomas aren't staying healthy. Holmes at center is a mystery. A.C. can't block. I know we picked up the 5th yr option, but I don't see anymore years after that. You can't just be an average left tackle. You have to be elite and handle one on one which Castanzo can't do. Mewhort is a rookie and he'll struggle.

A lot of teams are disappointed if a LT has to be elite

I see Harrison on the PS.    If Holmes gets hurt in-game,  then someone else slides into his spot -- likely Mewhort if he's not starting.      Or Thomas, if he's not starting.

Then,   the following week,  Harrison would get elevated to the 53.

Costanzo can't block?  I'm stunned.  How did he ever become a starting LT in the NFL if he can't block?

Samson Satele and Mike Mcglynn have both started for multiple teams now, Just because your a starter don't mean your a good O Lineman, With that said Castonzo is a solid O Lineman, Not Pro Bowl or All Pro good but a solid O Lineman

So you think ALL NFL LT`s are good and their Teams are Happy with them. Why bother trying to explain to you?

FYI, Castonzo had a bottom 1/3 total of Sacks, Hits and Hurries compared to his LT peers. ONLY Andrews excellence in the pocket and Peps shorter pass game kept AC from being a bottom 3-4 pass blocker, AGAIN.

He and Cherilus combined as PFF`s 3rd worst pass blocking tandem. It was mostly AC`s pass blocking effectiveness getting them that low.

They graded #2 & 3 as run blockers thanks to a few longer D Brown runs.

Nope, but a team that is not happy with their LT does not pick up their 5th year option a year before it becomes an issue.  Especially when the options is worth 7.4mill

I don't agree at all with the poster complaining about Castonzo, but the 5th year option had to be picked up when it was, and it's only guaranteed for injury. So it only says that the team wants to preserve their option, not that they're convinced the player is worth it.

Honestly Coffee I think AC had his best year last year, & improves every year. I think this year will be his best. I know he does struggle with speed rush guys sometimes, but i think he his solid maybe not great, I am pleased? :dunno::scratch:

I'm liking what is being put together for the Offensive Line!

What I'm really tired of, is watching Linemen who Offend!

Let's hope this group is going to start to turn the corner for quality O-line play.

IT'S TIME...

The 5 year option was picked up because we had nothing else to go to. There wasn't a extension because he is being evaluated. Once a better option at LT he is gone. AC is serviceable and that's the highest I'll go with him. People said in his 3rd year he'd get it, but I see nothing special. He can't block speed rushers or the first team starter. He can handle the 2nd stringers or Jacksonville nice. Anyone else has his number. Robert Quinn beat him in college and last season he beat him in the pros. Justin Houston had a field day on him in the playoff before he went out hurt and thus we seen Luck have time. We came back to win the game. Myself and a few other can come up with tons of games when we seen AC give up pressures, but thank God for Luck knowing when to move in the pocket. Luck makes him look half decent just like Manning covered up the line for 2 years after Tarik Glenn left. After those 2 season then you seen how bad the line was. This is the same case over again.

There are always three or four players on the Colts that a few people on this site can't stand the sight of. Evidently, Castonzo is one of them now.

No one ever suggested that AC is the greatest LT in the world. I'm not sure why anyone would go on a crusade against him, unless they don't watch line play around the league. There are 7 or 8 really good LTs in the league. The rest of them have their high points and their low points, just like AC does. It's okay to let players develop at key positions. They aren't all Pro Bowlers, and they don't all realize their full potential in just three seasons.

Justin Houston missed more than one play. He left the game in the 3rd quarter when the score what 38-10. After that we came back. Justin Houston was also playing hurt and re-injured his self.

That's not the way the fifth year option works.

I know how it works. It's an optional pick up on an extra year with the team. The salary is based off of ranking from the what the 3 to 25 ranked player of the same position is making. And I tell you we had no other options at LT and 7.5 million was the better deal and that was all. He wasn't receiving an extension because the team is evaluating him as we move forward. If he plays great which I personally doubt then we'll keep him.

Lol no he didn't. He was injured the play before Luck threw the GW TD. He never left the game before then.

I don't know if Houston was also hurt earlier in the game,  but this brief article says Houston was hurt on the play before Luck hit TYH for the go-ahead score....

No mention of any other injury or any other plays missed....

    • Rick Venturi today on the radio said he is more of a fan of speed with corners then what Ballard has done. He said young corners have to be able to recover from mistakes. I would almost like rodgers instead of Brent’s.
    • BBZ, what do you mean when you say Brents will be successfully targeted because of his size and speed? Aren't those his good traits?
    • Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.
    • As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill.  Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc. Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean   Considered one of the Safest picks. Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level   DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa   A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks.   Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end.   First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills:   "DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation.   "When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning.   "While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point."   Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier.   "His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound."   Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons. A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL.   Potential Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
    • He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.
