changing the D to a new look with the players we have

ok here is my thought

going with a 3/4 D

the ends would be: A. Jones, Francois/Redding

the dt's would be: Chapman, M. Hughes

OLB and here is one of the big changes: use a S for one spot. Landry would be good both as a cover lb and could stop the run and get to the qb. the other olb would be mathis

MLB would be Freeman and the new player we got from the browns

cb's would be Davis and Toler

S: another big change SS Werner and the fs howell or someone from the draft

my thought is with that front 4 they will stop the run and take up blockers in the middle. while the olb or olb's will get plenty and quick pressure on the qb. therefore the coverage of the S's would not need to be real great. and a ss the size of werner will make it hard for wr's and te's to make catches in the middle of the field.

First, Landry is waaaaaayy too small to play OLB in our base defense. Our EDGE players need to be around 250-260 lbs whereas Landry is maybe 225. With that type of size he would get absolutely shutdown by probably any backup OTs in the NFL. He simply doesn't have the size, or skillset to play Sam backer.

Secondly, Werner at safety? I probably don't have to explain why this is a bad idea.

Kudos for thinking outside the box and making me laugh at picturing Werner at safety tho.

I'm not sure exactly how quick werner is (didn't get to see him play much last year) but I remember sheldon richardson chasing down a runningback for 69 yards and stopping him from scoring a td at missouri. If werner is that quick, it'd be fun to watch him at safety at least. Landry cannot be an OLB though as he would get knocked around like a rag doll.

Remember that we are not playing a 3/4 but a 4/3 with ends that are 3/4 size like A. Jones and Redding and RJF the 2 DT's are NT size and will take up blockers in the middle so he would mostly have to deal with rb's and te's blocking him

Sorry, I made a mistake in my post and forgot to mention that we would no longer be a 3/4 D as you can see I have 2 de's and 2 dt's

Yeah that confused me a bit. Landry can defend the run, but I don't see him as a great blocker down the middle. It's just my opinion and we'll never know because this is a fun scenario, but he's a Safety for a reason. Also, I believe we have a 4/3 3/4 mix on defense.

I know the off-season is loooooonnnnng and you miss football.    But you've got waaaaaaay too much time on your hand.

For a moment there I thought you wrote that Landry moves to LB and Werner moves to Safety.    I don't drink or do drugs so I'm sure that I was mistaken....

Wait.    Oh.    You DID do that?!?!?

Somebody alert JSkinnz........   we need his special talent right about NOW!!

Really,  the the 2014 NFL schedule gets released tomorrow night!   And the draft will be here before you know it, and we can all focus on Colts football!

You can make it!    Be brave!    Be ColtStrong!

You are correct. The defense has switched depending on the match ups.

the nfl is a copy cat league. therefore you have to come up with the next genus plan. and I think I have found it.

maybe even have 2 big s's back there really hurting people when and if they catch the ball with smaller quicker olb's (ex-safties) that can cover and get after the qb.

ya'll watch some nfl team copy this idea!!

We play a hybrid 3/4. At the end of the day it's still a 3/4. I have yet to see us mix any 4/3. The wrinkle may have the 4/3 look, but one of the 4 down lineman is dropping back into coverage. Pressure is then applied from the left, right or middle. 3 guys are trying to get after the passer and eat up blocks. The OLB'er are setting the edge depending on what side the ball is ran on.

Why stop with just moving Landry and Werner.  Why not make Luck a LB.  At 6'4" 240lbs with his speed and knowledge of routes he would be a great cover LB.  And move Fleener to CB, I mean what WR would want to face a 6'5" 250lb corner back, plus with his height and reach it would make it difficult for QBs to drop passes in over his head.  Move Bradshaw to guard, with his leg drive he would be able to move those DTs out of the hole and really open some running lanes.  Move Chapman to LT, at 380lbs by the time a defender ran around him the QB will have released the ball.  Lastly, move TRich to DT, based on his runs he likes to stay in the backfield anyways so that would just take advantage of his skill set.

Oh yeah, and of course, have Patty Mac be both a place kicker and punter to free up an additional roster spot.

Interesting.

I think we play a good bit of 4-3-4 and  4-2-5. Oh well.

Sub nickel is the closest your going to get to your idea. Basically a S takes the place of 1 of the ILBers. Generally those subbed in safeties are in coverage or blitzing.

Werner are SS? Um no.

I am impressed by how well you have handled yourself in this thread despite all the ridicule.  That is rare.

So, I'm going to give a "like" to your post just because I appreciate someone who can take the high road.
