Will Hill: Possible low risk, high reward signing?

Recommended Posts

The New York Daily News reports FS Will Hill is likely "done" with the Giants after failing another drug test.

Hill is facing a lengthy suspension, one that could cost him 6-8 games or an entire calendar year. It'll be Hill's third suspension in as many seasons, though he does plan to appeal. Whether he wins that appeal or not isn't expected to matter in terms of saving his job with the Giants. The team is reportedly "livid" at Hill's continued drug issues. He was PFF's No. 2 overall safety in 2013.

I don't see why we'd do this. Next time he fails a drug test, he's out for a year.

Because we can probably get him for peanuts.

What's the worst case scenario? He fails another drug test during the season and is out for a year and we're out maybe $1M-$2M? I think giving him a 1 year $1.5M contract would be worth it for just the 10 games he'd play this year.

Worst case, he wins the starting job, relegates a young guy (possibly our second round pick) to the bench, then gets sacked for violating the drug policy again, and we're further behind than we would have been. There is upside, and he wouldn't cost a lot of money, but the risk is about relying on an unreliable person to shore up a position of major need on your team.

Yeaaah, I still don't think the risk is really that big. Whoever the backup is would have already had 6-8 weeks of starting experience by the time he came back from suspension. It really wouldn't be much different than accounting for an injury really.

You can't predict an injury. You'd have to ignore the likelihood that he gets busted for drugs again. Yeah, injuries happen, but you don't put yourself in situations like that on purpose.

I wouldn't have a problem if we did grab him, it would just make me nervous. Relying on people who have failed at least three drug tests -- when their likelihood depends on being clean -- makes me nervous.

Edit: His drug issues go back to college.

Well, it was stated he was suspended in the OP. And he's going to be cut so the RFA part doesn't really matter.

Technically, he'd be waived, meaning another team can claim him off waivers, and would assume his one year, $570k remaining, and his RFA rights in 2015.

wow, even better. We could 2nd-round tender him in 2015 for nothing and some team may even be crazy enough to give up a 2nd rounder for him (not likely but w/e)

Now I definitely want this to happen.

3rd suspension in 3 years I would think he sits a year probably never to be heard from again. If he can't hold it together being in the league a year suspension might be the end of him.

If it is only 6-8 games why not maybe a move from the big city would do him some good. He is from Jersey get him away from his homeboy's maybe he can get it together.

The other problem is the message in the locker-room.   That the Colts are so desperate to win that they'll bring in a guy with a long history of drug use.....  a guy who will likely fall off the wagon again while with Indy,  but we're willing to tolerate it.

I don't think that's a message the franchise wants to put out to the rest of the players.

This decision is not hard for me.....    I'll take a pass and not lose a minutes sleep over it.

You mean guys like Lavon Brazill, Weslye Saunders, and Da'Rick Rogers?

Goodness...

There's a huge difference between guys already on the roster and someone like Hill who has a long history and is being brought in to the mix to play a key role.

Rogers....   a free agent brought in to be on the practice squad, and earn his way on to the roster.

Saunders....    on the roster and then screwed up once.

Brazill....   on the roster and then screwed up once.

Hill?        Would be brought in to play a key role....  has screwed up numerous times....   has failed them all.

Bad message to the locker-room.    Wrong message.    Counter to what the Colts want to stand for.

Oh......    and did I mention how awkward this would be in the wake of what happened with Irsay?

And some of Superman's posts also touch on key issues that are not in Hill's favor.

Sorry,  this one doesn't work for me...........

But, as always........   your mileage may vary.

Brazill and Saunders screwed up more than once. Saunders had already been suspended in Pitt and it takes 2 failed drug tests to get suspended so Brazill was caught twice. There,s no difference between Hill and them besides that Hill was caugh another time.

Presumably, Hill would be the starter, not a 3rd string backup. A little more precarious.

Also, that third failed test is a big deal. You've already been suspended and had your wallet hit. That wasn't enough of a wake up call? You get popped again? Just kind of paints the picture of either a reckless person with no respect for authority, or someone with an addictive personality who can't control their habits. And again, this goes back to college. I don't know the guy, so I don't want to try to write the book on him. But it bothers me, for sure. He's not reliable.

At the cost with no guaranteed money I'm ok with getting this guy.  But I would make it clear that if he tests positive again, he's gone.

It seems like the Giants already tried that, if you believe the reports. Why else would they be so upset that he's in trouble again?

Not debating whether it would be more precarious, but I don't get the whole "it will affect he lockeroom" spiel when we already have guys who have been suspended for drugs, guys who have off the field issues like beating their girlfreinds, jumped other guys, ect.. on the roster already. It's not like this is some squeaky clean team where signing some guy who smoked pot it going to divide the lockeroom lol

I don't think it would affect the locker room, necessarily. I could see people talking about the message it sends, especially with the Irsay situation, but I think that's just noise for the sake of noise.

I'd just be nervous about plugging in a three time drug offender as a starting player on our defense, as I've stated already.

Being cut might teach him something. . . or maybe it teaches him nothing.  At the price though it's not like it's a big risk from a cap stand point.

I should clarify that I'm ok with it but it's not a prospect that excites me greatly either.  I'd never hand the guy a large amount of guaranteed money, that's for certain.  Even if he totally turns around and doesn't test positive again.

He might be the dumbest guy in the entire league. The fact that he's made so many mistakes and has yet to get his head on straight.....I don't think he'll ever figure it out. Extremely talented guy but probably not gonna be worth it. I would think that this being his third offense he'd get suspended a year.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'd rather the team not sign some * drug user in the hopes that they can get a full season of mediocre play from him.  I'd rather go with Howell or Brown or one of the UDFA.  I don't think football players need to be the pillars of society or role models but they should at least be able to conduct themselves like an adult.

The guy is an asterisk for sure, but don't pretend that he's a mediocre safety.
