Is a WR at 59 a realistic possibility?

Recommended Posts

The Colts have held private workouts with players like Donte Moncrief, Davante Adams, and Martavis Bryant. Players that are projected to go somewhere around our pick in the 2nd round (59).

Let's look at the situation: Currently, our WR corps consists of Wayne, Hilton, Nicks, Whalen, Brazill, and Rogers.

Of these six, one is 36 and coming off of a torn ACL, the other has been known to be injury prone, and 3 others are "just guys" at this point.

Next year, Reggie's, Nicks' and Rogers' contracts expire leaving us with a WR corps consisting of Hilton, Whalen and Brazill.

At this point in their careers, Brazill and Whalen have shown that they're "just guys" so I don't think that they'll be guys who can step up and be legitimate starters. And even if they do, we still wouldn't have a #1 WR (TY is not that, he disappears far too often and get's nicked up a lot).

With a QB of Luck's caliber, he should be surrounded with the best weapons possible to take full advantage of his potential.

But here's the kicker, in all likelihood, we're going to have to draft a a WR next year anyway. Reggie is probably gone, if Nicks blows up he'll probably hit FA, if he busts he won't get re-signed. This is arguably the DEEPEST WR class in league history. Drafting a WR at #59 this year may keep us from using a 1st rounder on a WR next year, or throwing a ton of money at a free agent WR (especially an injury-riddled Hakeem Nicks) so that we can keep other players like Allen, Freeman, Fleener and AC down the road.

At first I was totally against a WR at #59, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it may prove to be a smart move.

The strongest argument for a WR is best player available.  The other arguments neglect two things:  1) our tight ends 2) the possibility that Rogers is good.  We want to keep Allen and Fleener on the field as much as possible.  So if Reggie can't come back and if Nicks get injured, and if Rogers is lousy, we are left with T.Y. and  Brazill and Whalen as backups.  But that's a lot of ifs.  There is no if whether we need a safety.  That said,  BPA is always a good strategy.

Rogers probably isn't good. If the coaching staff had faith in him they would have just let him be the #2/#3 WR instead of signing an injury prone WR with effort questions and regulating him to reserve duty.

As for the TE's, Allen is coming off of major hip surgery, we don't know how he's going top perform. And Fleener is probably about average.

Besides, my point was more about planning for next year, not planning for all of our WRs getting injured.

A really, really good post by you!

And this WR class is so good....    so deep....   so talented.    I've got 20 guys projected to go in the first 4 rounds and wouldn't be surprised if more go.    I suspect Grigson thinks we gotta get at least one of them.

I've been projecting that we might take a flier in the 5th or 6th round....  but sounds like Grigson wants a serious talent and is willing to spend a high pick to do it.

It might not be the pick I'd make (I'd prefer high picks go to defense)  or the wide receiver I'd want,  but if Grigson wants a WR with pick 59 or 90,  then I'll support the move....

(Whoops...  there I go again,  blind with my loyalty to Grigson!   Oh, the shame!)

Anything is possible. I think we go BPA on our board that is why we got Nicks so we didn't have a huge need. I think we are in good shape to go BPA if one of the WR fall I can see Grigs grabbing him.

I personally like Brazil to really come on this year and think Rogers has a lot of potential. I would rather focus on someone to cover WR's and tackle RB's after watching the playoff games. Maybe even make sure we can protect Luck. It just seems to me we have a lot of positions that could use an upgrade over WR.

It appears to me we have so many weapons on offense right now: Start Nicks and TY ease Reggie in get Brazil/Rogers/Whalen some time. Fleener and Allen at TE and then Trent and Bradshaw can both catch the ball.

All I heard after Pagano was hired was how the D was going to take shape I am still waiting if they can do that by drafting a WR then great but I would like to see that D I was promised take a big step forward THIS YEAR

I agree with the original premise of your post....which is that we have enough uncertainty to draft a WR at 59.  However, to the bolded above, there is nothing to support that speculation about Rogers or how the coaches feel.

The facts that support speculation are: Rogers was signed by the Colts in September and spent most of his time on the PSquad.  Signed to active duty in the latter half of the season, he showed the talent he is known to have an abundance of in limited opportunities, including a game-changing catch to start a playoff rally.  He is a character risk who is yet to produce for a full-season, or handle the kind of prosperity that destroys even mature grown men.

You can use all that to suggest that Rogers has a lot more to prove, and that there is a need to draft a receiver, but I don't know how you'd use any of that to reach the conclusion that "Rogers probably isn't good".

This draft is deep at the front end at WR and CB. There is a very good possibility that the 59th pick will be one of these positions. Safety is not deep and likely the top 5 will be gone and there is a big drop off after that. There will very likely be a run on pass rushers too and likely the guys available at 59 would be reaches. Likely better value at 90 for OLB. If I were forced to put money on it, my guess is there will be a WR or CB available that would normally be a first round guy but fell due to depth. I'm leaning more to WR as it is the deepest position by far.

I know people keep saying we don't NEED a wr. We do NEED a safety. If there isn't value at 59, they wont pick a safety. Simple. Teams get very low on talent when they reach for perceived need early in draft.

Also, pass rush can be improved by more than just the rush back position. Creative blitzes using guys like landry can be effective, sending good pass rushing ILB can be effective, getting a good initial jam on receivers can be effective. Just because we didn't get sacks outside of Mathis, doesn't mean we NEED another pass rushing OLB if value isn't there

It's always a possibility.  Pretty much the only position you can count on us not drafting at 59 is a QB, and that's about it.  Well and of course special teams guys like LS, P, and K.  I'm not sure what the Colts draft board looks like, but if there was a WR that I'd have a hard time passing up on at 59, it's Davante Adams or Donte Moncrief.  Someone like Kyle Van Noy or Jimmie Ward would have to be there for me to pass on them.  Possibly even Terrence Brooks (but I've seen a lot of mocks and scouting reports that place him in the 3rd-4th lately.  Not sure the reason for the drop though.

A lot of the top rated guys would have to be gone by then: Ward, Joyner, Buccannon, Smith, Lawrence, Brooks, McGill, SJB, Breeland, Jones just to name a few.

Add Attachou and Van Noy to that list and I completely agree.  If those guys are all gone and there are no trade back partners then I'd have no problem taking Jordan Matthews or Donte Moncrief.

Who is the guy that plays like Anquan "So Strong" Boldin?

Jarvis Landry.

Doesn't have elite speed, isn't great at any one thing, but when you watch an LSU game, time and time again Landry is making big catches over the middle.

We don't need to go down the path of the Peyton era building a team outside in. Lets invest in OL and defense, much like the early Brady years, much like it is happening in the early Russell Wilson years. It will pay off quicker while Luck's contract is still affordable. Once Luck gets his big contract and the rookie class of Fleener, TY and Allen cannot be kept together, we will need to get more weapons through the draft since we cannot afford WRs in free agency as much.

Just my :2c:

Allen Robinson. CBS Sports compares him to Boldin, except Robinson is taller and more talented. I would be all for getting Robinson if he lasted.

Really like Robinson, but his blocking is pathetic....zero effort.

If Jordan Matthews, Marcus Smith, Kyle Van Noy, Jimmie Ward, Martavis Bryant, Jeremiah Attaochu are all available at 59 then who ya'll got?

In order of preference:  Van Noy/Attachou (flip a coin) > Ward > Smith > Matthews > Bryant

Ward>Attaochu>Smith>Van Noy>Matthews>Bryant.

Can't go wrong with any of them though.

Ward.  Fills the biggest need.  This is presuming we are full speed ahead on Holmes being our next starting center.

Lord I hope not we need to concentrate on D.

I'd rather add an O-lineman or DB if there's an impact player who is at one of those positions. That said, if the scouts believe there's a real star receiver still on the board at 59 and there aren't any star players in those other positions, yeah you've got to take the receiver.
