Manning, Gase visit to Saban may have violated the CBA

The PLAYERS union wants the limitations on off-season work because they want their members to have the right to lay on the beach for a couple of months without worrying about it damaging their competitive position within the team.

Peyton wasn't mandated to appear in Denver, nor did the team sneak in an extra full-squad scrimmage to get a leg up on the league. This is about Peyton - who you couldn't get to stop working unless you knocked him unconscious - talking football with a college coach. It was just fine when several Broncos recently spoke the the Duke coach and practiced in their facility. The only difference here is that Gase came along.

Does anyone imagine that Peyton was required to attend by Gase, or that he was "coached" in any way, shape or form? Does anyone imagine that any QB in the league doesn't keep in touch with their OC throughout the year? How do you control this exactly? If Gase is instead in the next room with a speaker phone, or if they each speak to Saban separately is it within the rules? How about if they vacation in the same place and bump into each other in the hotel lobby?

Penalizing them for this would be akin to the police - asked to pick up a witness to a mugging who failed to appear in court - slamming them face-first into the pavement, shackling them, and then interrogating them until they needed to be hospitalized. You need to be keep in mind why something is "illegal" in the first place. If Peyton wants to spend his off-season learning more about his craft, or if Brady wants to spend his entire off-season in BB's den watching video, WHO CARES. The agreement was designed to protect your backup running back from being pressured into scrimmaging all spring out of fear for losing his roster spot, not to keep Peyton from teaching Nick Saban how to play offense.

The NFL needs to come down hard on the Broncos and Peyton.  I can't believe the arrogance of #18.  He should not be trying to learn or teach others when it's the offseason.  He needs to follow the examples of his more respectable peers and go get some  DUIs, say he has a bomb while at an airport, slap his wife to the ground, or tweet pictures of himself making gang signs.  C'mon Peyton, learn to make better use of your time!

Some of these offseason rules are NCAA-esque...

You can say that again Superman. It boggles my mind what passes for infractions now. SMH. I have more efficient ways of wasting my time.

The CBA enforcement police need to get a life or a girlfriend I think at the very least.  haha

God forbid some players try to get better in the offseason.

I know right. The sheer audacity of Peyton Manning attempting to fine tune his craft.

What the hades is this world coming to when a future HOF tries to eliminate any vulnerabilities  & sharpen his decision making? LOL!

That is really interesting. I had no idea about that rule. Interested to see if any punishment is handed down by the league.

The rules change every year and it's become total nonsense.

I don't see where this even a big deal. So Manning went to visit, so what. Give him some space, the rules to this league get worse every year.

The NFL owners need to stop acting so greedy (ex. 18 game schedule; "player safety" at times becomes a reason for them to do something drastic - like kickoffs - so they can't get potentially sued) and the Players Association needs to stop being so darn protective (ex. This CBA "violation"; drug testing).

This was neg. from the players union not the league apparently in the CBA.

Yep, I keep waiting for a CBA complaint because an athlete's drug testing sample was not collected properly in an NFL sanctioned approved container. Sigh. Don't get so preoccupied with trivial nonsense that you have tunnel vision owners & players.

Actually maybe the rules are set up to protect coaches offseason from Peyton....more likely Peyton drug him along...poor Gase probably doesn't even get to spend time with his family.

All in all I don't think this breaks the "spirit" of the rule...but maybe the letter of it. Likely, a small fine and a do not do this again type letter.

and I think that's what they'll rule here....Supe...they weren't hiding anything and its hard to see what they gain by talking to Alabama coaches and players..

....but on the surface..its a violation...of the CBA.

Depending on the specific reading of the rules, it very well might be. And that's stupid.

There's been a lot of noise lately from players and coaches about these offseason restrictions. I think they'll make some adjustments to these rules in the future, so they make more sense.
