Mel's previous projection for the Colts was another WR....    Donte Moncrief.    But in this latest mock, Moncrief went a few picks before us.

 

Also, for what it's worth....    in Todd McShay's latest mock (about a week ago)  he had the Colts selecting...   ILB Chris Borland.    McShay noted he's not expecting Borland to last to 59 in the real world, and was surprised that Borland lasted so long in his mock....   but that's the way that one worked out.

 

I'm not expecting Borland to get past 50...  and will likely go much sooner than that in the 2nd round....

I've never measured any pundit by whether they can accurately match the player with the team.   Too difficult to do IMO.

 

I measure by how many players does one get right for each round, regardless of team.

 

And while that's an easier bar to clear,  it's still harder to do than most here would imagine.

I'd be fine with that pick if others aren't there we are interested.  Obviously getting him in the 3rd would be great, but even in the 2nd we would be getting a good player.  He has some of the best hands in the draft and is one of the best route runners.  He isn't a burner.  Everyone knew that and he did run a poor 40.  Injury and the fact that he might be somewhere in the mid 4.5s at best.  That's fine.  He did average 15.5 ypc this year in the SEC.  I'm a huge B1G fan but the SEC is second to none.  He is also a willing blocker and has no problem going over the middle.  One of the reasons Russell WIlson has been so good these past 2 years is because of his WRs.  Outside of having Harvin for the limited amount of time he was healthy, his WRs have been Tate, Kearse, Rice, Baldwin and Miller at TE.  There are no superstars in that group.  But they do all run good routes and consistently catch the ball.  A big reason why Wilson's numbers have been so good in hi first 2 years.  I believe I heard they were the most reliable WR group in the NFL in 2012.  I'm sure they were again in 2013.  2012 was when the Colts led the league in drops and 2013 wasn't loads better.  

 

I've been going back forth about drafting a WR, especially Landry, but if we do get him we will get a pro ready player who will be a steady contributor for years to come.

     I'd be very happy getting Borland in the second but it is very unlikely. Apparently many scouts have given him first round grade. He is a tackling machine, slips off blocks very well, is rarely fooled, takes great angles and drops into a zone well. He is not great at man coverage and that's why he isn't a top 15 pick along with less than ideal size. He just makes plays.

     Landry is a player who I wouldnt be excited about. Id be fine with it but not stoked. He would be our #4 receiver if everybody is healthy but would give us a solid player and depth for next year when reggie and nicks are FA.

My thought is Mel Kiper is an *.  If we could never post another one of his mock drafts on these forums again, it would be a much better place.  Nothing wrong with posting him here, but it's just like trying to pick up hot chicks at a bar or something.  The bar is just a much better place when all the ugly ones are gone.  Takes the beer goggles out of the equation.

Good reciever but I really hope we go defense. Preferably OLB or S. Our offense on paper right now looks pretty loaded. Now that has to show on gameday but with good health, I think it will. Were simply gonna be able to throw out more options than a Defense can defend. If we can add a few more solid pieces to that Defense then I think were really gonna do ourselves well.

I'm a fan of Landry. IMO, he is exactly the type of receiver that could develop with Reggie Wayne. They are very similar in how they would play. Landry is pretty sure handed, though not necessarily explosive. He could be a very good possession receiver with Reggie's tutelage. Reggie uses a lot of technique to create separation. I would prefer Landry be at least 3 inches taller, but I think he can play.

 

That being said, I would prefer him in the 3rd....but, I don't think he will be there.

No thanks to any WR in the second round. It's just not a need(or at least immediate need). I wouldn't mind taking one in the 5th or even the 3rd if someone fell but not with our 2nd.

 

That #2 needs to be a S, CB, OLB, or Center/Guard in my opinion. Too many other needs to spend on a WR when we have a ton of talent at that position, even if Reggie is a ?.

No offense but has anyone ever seen the draft go even REMOTELY close to any of these mocks. I know Werner was a mid-teen pick last year in the mocks and I always see Kiper say "so and so are the best players available...blah blah blah" and they stay on his top 10 available for rounds not picks...granted he knows more than the avg joe...but he DOESN'T know what is on the minds of these teams...most rate and evaluate players in a totally different way or draft by their own set of rules etc. Fruitless endevour because most times even the first 10 picks can't be figured out...and CERTAINLY not this year. There is likely 25 guys that are first round locks...after that its anyones guess.

 Do you really still not get it that those "DROPS" were just Andrew throwing HUNDREDS of inaccurate/ hard to catch balls.

 Andrew couldn`t properly lead a receiver for his life in year one. He was a little better this past season thanks to PEPS O.

 He still has a long way to go.

Two reasons un-mentioned in your post about why Russell Wilson has been so good....

 

One,  his running game.  

 

Two,  Seattle doesn't throw that often.   Wilson's rookie year I believe he threw the fewest number of passes of any starter...  you know who else threw very few passes?   RG3...   his rookie year I think he threw almost as few passes as Wilson.   The Redskins running game powered their offense.

 

Two more glaring examples of why a running game is still very, very important in the NFL.

Depends on how much we need a WR. This year's draft is very deep in WR, and we could probably find with a 3rd+ rounder WR. Not a bad idea to stock up on them.
