Manning ready to move on to 2014

Manning acted like a baby after the SB with kid childish response to questions .

While I don't agree with Jeff's statement that Brady whines and pouts, you're saying the exact opposite of what people said about Peyton after the loss.  Sherman came out and said he was very classy for checking up on his injury, he congratulated tons of Seahawks players on the field, and he even took questions from the media.  In fact, you should take a few minutes to read this: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/peyton-manning-leaves-crushing-super-bowl-loss-with-reputation-intact-065205260.html.  Just because one guy says something about Brady, that doesn't mean you have to throw the same criticism towards Peyton.

It has always ticked me as a Colts fan that losing didn't bother Manning more. I like the fact that he is respectful of his opponents and all but sometimes it is like losing doesn't phase him. Maybe he is just better able to leave everything on the field once the whistle blows but honestly the only area where I think Brady is better than Manning is competitiveness and that is huge.

I disagree.  I like how he approaches it.  If you had to pick one guy to be the face of your franchise simply from body language, who would you take?  Who looks like the better leader?

Both guys are clearly upset, but one of them has a look of contempt on his face whereas the other is listening to reporters and answering questions.

I understand being dejected after a loss, but there's something to be said about professionalism, maturity, and class when dealing with a loss.  And Peyton's competitive drive is nuts.  He does whatever he can to win.  The picture of him soaking his ankle has gone viral, and there are tons of stories about him pushing himself and his teammates to be better.  Even Welker has gone on the record to say that both Brady and Peyton are incredible QBs.  I think the words he used was comparing Picasso to Michaelangelo.  You don't get to where either guy is without having a strong competitive fire within you

lol. Poor Cam. That was a rough for season for him but I am willing to give him a pass given how horrid the Panthers were and he was still learning how to be a leader. I thought his demeanor and body language were better last season.

But I was comparing Peyton to Brady and while I agree there is a razor difference between them, I always felt like Brady's competitiveness was better. JMO.

Yeah, I understand.  I know of others who feel the same way, but I think it's just because Brady expresses it more.

I don't think he meant that Peyton isn't competitive, I think he was just trying to say he feels Brady might be a bit more competitive than Peyton, or perhaps that Brady's competitiveness is more visible than Peyton's

yeah,  I think you're probably right, and   I probably shouldn't have even commented.   It just made me laugh to think someone would actually think Peyton is not competitive...     Ask Eli and Cooper how competitive he is     haha.

That is pretty much how I felt as well SW1. I thought Manning backed out of a question he should have been expecting. Even his own teammates categorized the game as embarrassing. Not sure if he was just trying to deflect or what but I was disappointed overall with his press conference. I was expecting more from him.

Deflection tactic eh? I will say that when you are still comprehending a crushing loss like that it is hard to digest & not feel like you are in a murky haze of some kind. You know you lost, but you are not able to articulate why. Everything is a blur & you feel like your sleep walking outside of your body. Distance does help give you perspective. Maybe that was the problem. Peyton was still to close to the SB to even address what just happened.

But even if you feel adrift at the podium I do agree that a QB must say "Look, I stilly foggy over the outcome. I'm proud of my teammates & I congratulate the Seattle Seahawks on playing a great game & flawlessly executing it. I'm not ready to discuss my role in the final result tonight. PLease give me a couple of months to process this. Thank you. I will offer my assessment on my performance at a later date. Goodnight & God Bless everyone."

I would have found that reply acceptable sweetsurrender.

Will Denver win 12 or 13 games this season? Sure. Do I see the Niners & Seattle colliding in the NFC Championship Game again? Probably. I will concede that any given Sunday any team can fall even Seattle, but with a Championship cache fresh in February, the Hawks are just oozing with the been there done that confidence. It reminds me of when Steve Young & the 49er's stomped the San Diego Chargers in 1995 49-26 at the SB. HC Bobby Ross disappeared after that lopsided loss to the Detroit Lions into NFL obscurity, Stan Humphries was their QB who was never clutch after that defeat, & that franchise never recovered until Drew Brees was drafted by the Chargers in 2001.

Will Manning disappear? No, of course not, but it's hard to get past a beat down when you are constantly reminded of how the best NFL offense got whipped with Seattle victory parades, the ring ceremony, & all the NFL pundits talking about their repeat Lombardi prospects. I remember WR Reggie Wayne taking about the 2009 SB loss to the Saints once. He said you can't put it behind you when all you ever see is that botched onside kick fiasco. Losing on the biggest stage in sports sucks & when you get smacked around like a rag doll. I just can't see how that horrific memory ever leaves or escapes you.

Hmm...the Chargers didn't even belong in that game..and to compare Stan Humphries to Peyton Manning doesn't really compute. I just don't buy your thesis. I like you will make Seattle my favorite but I don't think its a forgone conclusion they would beat Denver...nor that either team will make it back. As it is I favor NE and SEA but I actually think New Orleans could upset SEA. I like what they have been doing on defense and if Brees gets him one more target I think they can get over the hump against SEA.

Basically, I don't believe teams sit around and watch ESPN/NFL NETWORK 24/7 and listen to stupid pundits talk nonsense all year long. It hurt, but they know how to win and have great players. They also added to me some key leadership positions as well. Ware, Ward, Talib will really IMPROVE that defense and give them veteren leadership at key positions. They upgrade their left tackle with Clady and I honestly think Decker/Sanders is almost a push. They still have the draft to go and I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade up to look at ILB/CB to top off that defense. This isn't a team that is going to just disappear...PM is too motivated and won't allow them to think anything but get better. His leadership will hold everyone accountable to moving forward...after all the way they lost last year to Baltimore I think would hurt more than a blow out to Seattle when they know they didn't play well.

And as for not coming back after a butt whooping...Miami in 72 got dominated in the SB the year before 24-3 and had a perfect season following....Buffalo came back 4 yrs in a row and came back to play Dallas after one of them most loppsided SB wins ever after the 3rd one.....sure they got beat again and didn't matchup well against a LOADED Dallas team but they came back. Those teams had great leaders and great QBs....something Denver has as well. We as fans read way to much into things and pay WAAAAY to much attention to Monday morining qb articles and these pundits paid to grab headlines and supposed experts....who are only working on TV most of the time because they can't get a job in the NFL. I think Denver changed up their team just enough to keep continuity and a solid core but brought in upgrades and leadership at some needed positions to make the team different enough to be confident they can get over the top. It isn't like they just said we are going with the very same team...we upgraded...and upgraded the defense and pretty much kept the offense at a high level...and Seattle has downgraded too...don't forget they have lost some components...and who knows if they stay healthy...its a long season. I think Denver will be fine...and if they meet again...it will be a much better game.

What does this have to do with the 2013 Broncos?

I think it's funny that so many opposing fans had issues with Brady saying he wasn't going to watch the Super Bowl after losing the AFCCG. Mostly the same people who, as fans, take it as seriously as death, but then fail to realize how much more vested you would be in it if you were out there on the field. Brady's a competitor, and losing sucks... few deal with it gracefully, and those who do the most winning usually have the hardest time with losing. I don't blame him for not wanting to watch a game when he probably still believed in his heart that he should have been playing in it.

It doesnt have anything to do with the 2013 broncos. It had to do with a response. "manning will have to answer for this!" "his team may not move on!" and other pessimistic points. I was pointing out that those same people probably wouldnt be saying those things if it wasnt a rival, as evidenced by the fact that maybe their QB had a stunning loss in the Super Bowl, but they werent saying those things then. They were too busy giving him a pass and making excuses.

I also show how Brady clearly was unable to move on from the AFCCG, but they will ignore this as well.

Actually the poster you quoted said that she felt Manning and the Broncos would move on successfully and do well. I read the comment as that the media wouldn't let it go... not the team, or any players. I can understand taking it as a perceived slight but I don't think that's the case. Most of us Pats fans here have a healthy respect for Manning.

Please, lets just speak for ourselves. Each Patriots fan is their own entity.

I never said Amfootball said he wouldnt move on. I took "he will have to answer for this" negatively. I dont see how to take it any other way. I have never seen someone use the phrase "you will have to answer for this!" in any way shape or form to explain something not terrible or negative.

And as already explained, I feel it is highly hypocritical.

Not sure what your beef is with me but you have commented a few times now on my posts insinuating some type of hypocrisy and then running to bring Brady into the convo.

To clarify, I think Manning will have to talk about the SB all season long because the media is not going to let it go. The way it didn't let his loss to the Ravens go last year. They were brutal toward him as the post-season approached about his post-season short comings and the one and done's. To Manning's credit, he dealt with them professionally and answered their repeated questions about how he was focusing on the season at hand. I think right now Manning may be the most criticized athlete second only to Lebron but Lebron quieted his critics by winning the last two championships. I am not sure Manning can really win with the media no matter what he does. He beat the Chargers when many picked him to go one and done again and then be beat his main nemesis in Brady and they brushed by that and said he HAD to win the SB and when his team got dominated they began the talk again about his post-season short-comings. And while I think Manning will take the media in stride this season, I question his team being able to move on and as I have said in the past, I am not a fan of Fox either so we will see how it all plays out. But history shows the SB loser has a really tough time repeating and part of that is because it is so hard to move on from a Super Bowl loss. Still, I expect Denver to get back to the post-season and make another run at it.

Please tell me you are not that stupid. My comparison to the to the 1995 SB has to do with the residual effects of a total smack down in a SB regardless of who the losing starting QB is. Don't bring up the 72 Dolphins either. It's a lame comparison that will never be duplicated in the NFL today. Did Stan Humphies ever recover from that caboose kicking? Nope & I think it will linger in the back of 18's mind too.

You can put all the new defensive pieces you want in Denver, but the question is will Peyton be able to shake the thought of getting completely dominated by Seattle again or San Francisco who also likes to give opposing QBs frequent love taps all game long? I have my reservations.

Dominant defenses always travel well in the Playoffs & Seattle will return or San Francisco will serve as their NFC SB proxy anyway. Book it!

I apologize if my 1st sentence offended you dgb. I had no intention of demeaning or insulting you, but my thesis is obvious: When a QB gets beat into submission by a team or faces another squad with a similar defensive mentality like the Niners, those painful memories of being manhandled never leave your mind & they serve as a repressed memory impediment to SB success should you cross paths again. Let's just agree to disagree here & move on. Thank you.

With Manning the fatal flaw always remains: Not can he have a great regular season, not can he win MVP again, not is he wicked smart. The achilles heel is can he win a 2nd SB ring? He's stumbled twice & in 2014 got whipped like I've never seen before. On 3rd & long in the SB, can he move the chains & get a TD in the 4th Qtr to win another Lombardi Trophy if that Seattle D knocks him on his rear as he releases the ball? I'm not feeling it right now. JMO.

You keep up bringing up First Take. I rarely if ever watch that show. I was talking about the NFL Network, ESPN and national radio as well. He was discussed a lot here on Boston radio as well.

I think what is tough for Manning is he has the great regular seasons contrasted with the shortcomings in the post-season so it creates a natural story for the media that they love to revel in. I would think by now Manning is so used to their predictably that it does not phase him. I agree about his team though. It can be hard to get over a loss like that. But they have made some big moves this off-season to keep themselves as the front runners in the AFC anyways.

You are telling everyone things "the media as a whole" have said and according to u are currently saying. Please post one link not during the superbowl week where anyone said "he would not get past this/unable to overcome loss" because that is just flatout propaganda and misinformation. I would hardly call that "giving my opinion"

Show me where I said Manning "would not be able to overcome the loss." I said, in fact, the opposite that Manning would be just fine. I said I wondered more about his teammates as most SB losing teams have a tough time getting back because the loss is so hard to move on from and the off-season is so short.

Relax. This whole forum is based on opinions.

I can appreciate that you want all fans to express their own independent thoughts on NFL matters FJS. Believe me, I have known both GP & AMF for awhile now & they tend to state their own viewpoints & justify them quite well on a regular basis. They are smart, free thinkers & no one's ventriloquist dummy at all. Your words "own entity" confuse me though. Do you mean they are copycats or full of themselves? Both points of view are way off base by the way & nothing could be further from the truth actually.

I don't care for unfounded sweeping generalizations regarding fair minded friends of mine that happen to be avid football fans across the entire football league not just the Patriots BTW.

Elway for sure has not forgotten how he got his 2 SBs, definitely not on the reliance of his arm. He made plays only when he had to when teams ganged up on the run. But his run set up the pass and teams will always force a Peyton led offense to run, run, run and hope Peyton gets impatient at some point in time.

The more the Broncos' OL focuses on running between the 20s, the easier Peyton's job is. If Peyton dwelled on his picks and playoff failures like his naysayers or detractors do, he probably would be out of the league right now. :)

Like Eurythmics sang in her 80s song "Missionary Man":

"And if I had a dollar bill for all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money piled up to my chin"

That is what Peyton would say for all his playoff follies :). Heck, look at Andrew Luck, he throws a bunch of picks but makes one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history. All the good ones MUST have a short term memory, within a game, AND across games.

Yeah, I'm that stupid....Peyton has suffered just as bad losses...and bounced back. Thinking back to the Jets smack down. One thing that Peyton IS familiar with is playoff failures. He is an expert and he always brings his team back. You honestly think Peyton lets the narratives or a loss get to him. He CONSTANTLY is looking ahead. Improving, learning, and trying to reach the top. He has been here before and always comes back. He is THE PROFESSIONAL of professional QBs. There is none like him...and he won't allow his team to do anything but give their best. I don't buy it....I don't buy your narrative and while of course its an uphill battle to even win 1 SB I don't think he won't win because of anything in the past. He may run into a better team...a hot team...but he won't lose because of some mental issues with how they lost last year...that I'm sure of....IMO of course...ours just defers.

I watch a lot of football in the off-season and the chatter was a lot longer then one or two days. But my main point was that this season he will hear about more just like last season when the playoffs were approaching. I guess we will find out soon enough.

I think you're right...Manning will roll up big numbers again but 2 things will be different.

First of all...he wont be able to duplicate the record pace of 2013...because they play the NFC West....

..and secondly....as you say....his exploits will be met with talk of 'so what'  look at what eventually happened last year

But in the end..it'll come down to a playoff game vs. New England as to whether they get back to the bowl

Can he win a 2nd SB & take a similar beating from Seattle or the Niners that's the question? You honestly think Manning can take another physical beat down like that again? I don't.

I honestly think if he faces that swarming defense again it's deja vu all over again. You can disagree with me & so can Gramz. That is your right. But physical & mental beat downs that neutral you are never erased in a violent sport like football.

Will the Broncos make the Playoffs? Yes. Will they make a deep run? Yes. Will they cross the finish line? I don't really see the 4th trip being possible let alone a magic carpet ride myself. Could I be wrong? Sure.

As far as narratives go, I honestly think physical brutality is never forgotten & once a team dominates you in the SB your mind will have a difficult time jumping that hurdle. Hitting the reset button is easier if your last game was a competitive one, but when it was so lopsided in the other direction, starting over fresh is easier said than down when crunch time arrives.

For some reason, I feel it will be a Colts vs Patriots AFCCG in Indy to determine who is the AFC rep. :)

With all due respect, that is a completely uninformed opinion.

A nice post here Chad, but Andrew's career is just starting while Peyton is in his twilight years meaning that he is closer to the end than the beginning. Age is a factor now. 38 is 38 & I see a 2 year window at best. Can Peyton Manning handle CB Darrelle Revis or will he be Ty Law 2.0 & crush the Broncos Championship dreams? Time will tell I guess.

I won't say that Manning acted like a baby after the SB loss to Seattle. More like #18 seemed insulted by the question of were you embarrassed by your overall game performance? Look, I know how hard Peyton worked to get there to the Promiseland a 3rd time & no one wants to come up short. I get that. I was just shocked that 18 conveyed the impression through his body language that the question was somehow below the belt & out of bounds on some sort of decency scale. It wasn't.

I respect Manning & I always will, but his reaction to the embarrassment question critiquing his SB performance was not his finest hour of being a professional HOF QB. Frankly, I get the pride angle, the let me lick my wounds angle, & the look what Denver achieved this year angle, but at the end of the day Manning should not have been insulted by that question & I expected him to say "Tonight, I wasn't good enough to win this game & Seattle took us out to the woodshed for a good ole fashioned beat down. Am I happy about this? Of course not. Do I bear some responsibility in this 1 sided loss? Yes, I do. Do I respect my teammates? Absolutely. Will Denver be back in the thick of things next season? Of course. We all have some heavy lifting to do though myself included."

Champions are defined by what they do when they lose. Now, Peyton is always gracious in his remarks that will never change, but when you lose I expect you to take your lumps, face the firing squad media, & not duck any relevant questions. It's because of 18 global stature & losing on the world's biggest stage in sports that Manning's response to the performance question saddens me. No one gets a pardon. There is no diplomatic immunity clause from scrutiny here & I would expect more from the most cerebral QB in the NFL today.

Am I angry with Peyton? I'm just perplexed & bewildered thinking that it's okay to avoid answering a relevant question. I don't care how big you are as a celebrity. We all have a horrible day at the office sometimes, but you need to own it & admit that you got your clock cleaned, didn't do enough to win, & just say yep my execution just awful tonight. No other way around it. Do that & I admire your candor & honesty, but if you display fake outrage at the question & use your teammates as a shield to falsely claim that the media is disrespecting them. I am frustrated by that scapegoat response. JMO.

Peyton is still a HOF QB who dropped the ball in his post game press conference. A tiny blip on the radar screen that I won't crucify him for other than to say just own your losses even a SB one that's all.

Well said SW....

That game was embarrassing, no two ways around it. I was embarrassed for them. To act offended by the question just seemed like a cop out. I still love the guy, and his accomplishments are definitely something to be celebrated, but it's okay to be human and feel embarrassed after a good old fashioned beatdown.

I love how so many of you seem to have a crystal ball and know exactly how next year will play out for Peyton and the Broncos.

As for Peyton's remarks after the game, I'm not going to judge because I have been guilty of saying things I regret or not responding in what others consider to be the appropriate manner at times.

And before anyone accuses me of being a Peyton apologist, I also defended Brady last year when others were lambasting him for his reaction after the game vs. the Panthers.

I disagree. Especially from a competitive player like Peyton Manning. I think only mentally weak players are beat before a game even starts and that is what your trying to imply. Teams have been dominated on both sides the ball before and come back to play them competitive if not beat them. Personally I played a team in high school and we got absolutely beat down. They came out with more intensity and didn't let up. Later in the sectionals we played them and we lost on the last play of the game when we failed a two pt conversion. Two totally different results from the same two teams. We were angry how the first game went...we didn't go in scared we went in focused, watched lots of tape and learned....you don't think Peyton will do that??? Sorry. I agree he may not have the best team in the end...we just have to wait and see but it won't be lost mentally...Peyton wouldn't even bother to suit up again if he was beaten so easily as you claim. He isn't afraid, worried about defensive pressure etc. The guy had 4 neck surgeries and if he was worried about being hit he would have just retired. He may not be as quick to slide around in the pocket to avoid the rush...that is 100% true...and the Broncos will have to keep him clean back there with great pass blocking and timely running and great play calling he won't turn into a turtle because he is getting pressured. It would undoubtedly hurt the offense...and likely they will lose if he is getting pressured a lot...almost all qbs do in those situations...but it seems your implying the are beat mentally already...and that is just laughable....sorry but your PROJECTING....your placing your own feelings and fears and thoughts onto those players and it just isn't true in their mind. Football players are so unique in that they have short memory to bad plays etc (the good ones). Yes you have your Matt Schaubs that let plays haunt them and affect their game....clearly Peyton isn't of that sort. He uses it as motivation...learning...how else do you explain all the losses, the beat downs he took from NE and then come back to win later in his career. He has good numbers against Belichek later in his career....maybe not W/L but his qb ratings have been much better. I'm sorry Peyton just isn't that type of player to let this affect him. NFL players get beat, dominated at different times throughout the game but come back fighting all game long. Its a very much a momentum game. Remember SD a couple years ago? Remember the Colts against the Chiefs? That is football...and those are elite players that don't let that being owned or dominated stop them from performing. If what you say is true then AL won't be able to get past NE...after getting crushed....heck how did he come back from the beat down Chicago gave us game 1...thats football...and that is also PM. I think he will play much better and we will just have to see when they face during the regular season. I think Denver suffered from not playing a physical team like Seattle all year last year...to adjust schemes etc...they will get the opportunity to see that speed and physicality during the regular season this year...and will be able to adjust come playoffs. After all, Peyton is 6-0 when facing a team they lost to previously in the season in rematches...to me that doesn't show a man that can't come back from being beaten...small or big.

I think Peyton didn't want to end the great year he had saying it was humiliating or embarrassing because of what they had accomplished this year....that said the performance itself was...and I'm sure he regrets the team not playing better...but he is a proud man...and worked hard and it was very soon to have asked him those things...ask him in 10 yrs and I'm sure his answer will be different...but throwing your team and himself under the bus with headline material about being embarrassed etc would be easy to take out of context...knowing it would set a tone for all offseason etc he went positive and I think its a good idea.

I don't know why you dragged me into this discussion.  I suppose it was because I "liked"  dgambill's comment.

I "liked" that he said Peyton has bounced back from tough losses before,  that he is the Professional  of Professional QB's and so on.

I like you SW1, and consider you a friend, but sometimes you have some wild expectations...  You were upset with Irsay because he said too much,  you were upset with Grigson because he said too little,  and  you're upset with Peyton because he didn't say exactly what you thought he should, and you're upset with me because I didn't agree with you....   :dunno:
