    Unitas  was not a Indianapolis Colts fan & I was never a Unitas fan so I would never call him great maybe a lil better than 18 by a nose .

 

Peyton Manning is the  greatest Colts QB of the Indianapolis era  IMO  Baltimore can keep Unitas & the Colts trophy .

Still crying 30 years later. I grew up on the east coast and the Colts were my team. I am still a Colts fan 30 tears later.

I was a Colts fan back in the days of Johnny U. and I have stayed one through good times and bad. I intend to stay a fan for as long as I can draw a breath but Peyton was much more than popular. I have always wondered what Unitas would have done in today's game. I am sure he would have been great.

You all are forgetting about the quarter back that probably has made the colts the force they are for years to come. Without him, we don't have the bright future we have.. that QB is Curtis Painter.....without painter we don't get luck

IMO as a Indy fan I agreed with the popular sentiment easily because Peyton Manning was & much more to this city "  LOS  the house that Peyton built "  & the state  18 's many charitable works a  Lombardi , Both on & off the field Peyton Manning is a class act  he brought to Indy that winning attitude if he had a decent defense his 4'th quarter heroics may have not been needed co often .

 

PB     18 has on several occasions expressed his admiration & appreciation of Johnny U & what he accomplished & once I believe he asked the NFL to allow him to add something to his Uni to acknowledge Unitas  but was denied by the No fun League .

 

 Lastly I'v always felt Peyton Manning was the Johnny Unitas of the modern day Colts & IMO Unitas would be great in any era .

I don't get it either whether football or House of Cards the State has a funny way of bargaining in good faith .

No offense, but I as a Indy resident I think of Lucas Oil Stadium as the house that tax payer money built. Not Peyton. The team being successful helped, but it really was a luxury... and not a need. The dome had no big issues except lack of space/some amenities. Unlike Market Square which had some structural problems that made it destined for the scrap heap. LOS came did give us added convention space that helps with other events, but Indy wasn't in bad shape. The Super Bowl wouldn't have come here... and we wouldn't have had to endure Madonna which would have been fine with this wizard, hehehe.

No offense taken buddy  as a Indianapolis Union Bricklayer IMO my tax money was well spent & a investment in the future just like the former Hoosier Dome was that gave a home to our Colts in 84 I watched the Basketball Championship , Bruce Springsteen & our Colts there it was a okay venue but nowhere near as nice as LOS as a bricklayer I like it very much & I love the roof  . Correct me if I'm wrong but we might have lost our Colts had LOS not been built .

 

Having said that we did have a SB here which was cool & I'm convinced we'll have another which brought large amounts of revenue .

 

I'm with ya on Madonna enduring her music seems to me is both cruel & inhumane best enjoyed with high quality ear plugs .

I don't mind not clamming 100% of Colts history, because  A: I didn't see any of it and B: it means I'm under 50. It's also inconsequential, how I or anyone "feels" the franchises history is split between two towns. 1 team.

 

To be honest, the first 10 or so years of Indy football was a flat out embarrassment, and a continuation of the crap teams Irsay Sr. was peddling to Bmore fans the decade prior to the move. 

 

To Adonis's point about the Colts having potentially moved if not for LOS. That also goes back to the lousy football that was played here until a few nice years with Harbaugh, and then 18. There would have been no fan base to attract if the team didn't turn it around. The stadium issue, was just one of many.

What you guys don't understand about that time about eminent domain, is that it was never signed until after the Colts left. The eminent domain spin was Chernoff's , that is popular in some circles. Yes, the bill did pass in one part of the MD legislature, but it was because it got back to Baltimore that Irsay was already gone. It was a last step defensive measure to get him to the bargaining table to stay. As then Mayor Shaeffer said, he would not have let the bill pass.

Irsay had been all over the place, Memphis , Jacksonville, Phoenix, and Indianapolis with reporters all over him. Reporters sniffed out the done deal about Irsay going to Indy, and that got back to Baltimore officials. Faced with a done deal, they decided on a last ditch Eminent Domain deal , as a last ditch effort to keep the Colts, and get Irsay back to the bargaining table.

Irsay alienated one the the great franchises and fan bases in NFL history. Memorial Stadium was coined the Worlds largest outdoor insane asylums, it was so loud. They sold out every game from 1958-1971. The Ravens have sold out almost every game since 1996. It is a rabid football town . Bob Irsay came in from Chicago as a loud outsider , that really wanted to move the team from the moment he got there, and people knew it. He immediately started putting the team on the market by starting negotiations with other cities to move the team. He traded our best players and produced only three winning seasons in 12 in Baltimore , putting mostly a terrible product on the field. As on Indy 1984-1996, attendance dropped. He alienated and lost a lot of the fan base , and would have gotten a stadium had he not alienated everyone. Ask any Colts player during that era what it was like dealing with Bob Irsay. The stories are endless.

It has been 30 years since this happened. I'm not upset with Indy, it is a great city with great football fans , and the Indianapolis Colts have built their own great tradition. We now have the Ravens, and have built a second great legacy of our city's proud football history. Certainly, the Baltimore Colts will forever be a part of that proud history. However, I will always challenge the Bob Irsay/Chernoff spin about Eminent Domain being the sole reason they left. It is far more complicated than that , and some of the blame does fall on Baltimore and it's officials. But don't give Bob Irsay a pass. You may like him for moving the Colts to Indy, but he was a horrible owner on both places. Had he not passed away, and Jim took over, your team would have never won a SB on 2006, and may have well been in LA.

Think about this with Bob Irsay as owner past 1996, with you guys having the same kind of teams you had in 1984-1996. Attendance would have dropped, maybe your officials wouldn't have built a new stadium, and maybe Peyton Manning pulls an Elway because Bob is there. It happened in Baltimore, and it could have happened in Indy. Consider yourselves lucky the son took over. He may have some personal issues, but he learned how to run a team from watching the old man's mistakes .

Until I came on this forum, I didn't understand how some people felt about the old Baltimore Colts. In discussing topics with many of you , historically I now understand how people from both Baltimore and Indy enjoy the old Baltimore Colts history. Because of what happened, the two cities will always be linked. Some of the younger people in Baltimore and Indy couldn't care less, but I think learning history is always a good thing, NFL history included. I love how Orioles manager Buck Showalter , made a rookie who didn't know who Frank Robinson was, write an essay about him . Whether we like it or not, March 28, 1984 is part of all of our history , whether from a Baltimore or Indianapolis perspective. It was a fascinating story on NFL history , if nothing else

As far as jobs go there is no doubt LOS did, and still does provide a lot of jobs. There is no doubt about that. I got to see Colts games, Wrestlemania 8, and many other events at the dome. If I remember correctly the dome was one of if not the smallest venues in football at the time, but the place was loud. The team used the old if we don't get a spiffy new building we could leave when the lease is up. So the city ponied up the money... including people living in the surrounding areas who didn't get to see the incoming revenue directly.

If the city gets another Super Bowl we will reap the rewards because they already put the necessary stuff in place with what the NFL gave the city to fix it up. If memory serves me we pretty much broke even after the last one.
