Will We Have Pat McAfee Next Year?

Andrew Luck's Beard

Pat's a fan favorite, or at least he's one of my favorite Colts player, because of just the things he does and how he reacts to them. From the GIANT Trindon Holliday return hit against the Broncos, to the PED test the following day, to the Pat McAfee show, to the drunk swim session that one year, to the car thing to that army guy at Lucas Oil Stadium, and now to the Nude Luck picture, Pat brings life to the Colts organization. He's also one of the best punters in the league, especially at pinning the opponent in their own 20. However, he's fallen off a bit this year. So, my question to you guys is do you think Pat McAfee will return next year?

I am not sure.  I figured he would get tagged last year and he did but I also expected the Colts would work out a long term deal after he was tagged and they didn't.  He is a hold over from the Polian era which is a strike against him because GMs tend to like their own guys.  However, he is very good at what he does that I think that would trump that fact but I am also not Ryan Grigson.  I know the local media says Pat really wants to stay here so I doubt he's going to go on the market looking for the biggest offer he can get and probably look for a deal that will let him stay with the Colts but if they don't give him one then yeah clearly he'll leave.

GM's tend to like players that are good at their jobs.  I think who brought them here first is not very important.

I don't think GMs, particularly Grigson, have anything against holdovers from previous GMs.  If that was the case Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis would be playing somewhere else.

Clearly people are missing the part where I said the fact he's very good at what he does I think trumps that.  Also yes GMs do tend to dump guys from the previous GMs unless they are stars like Wayne or Mathis why do you think Grigson gutted the roster when he came in?  If there wasn't a problem with talent to start with they wouldn't have been brought in.  GMs like to win or lose with their own, again unless you have star players.  Is McAfee a star player?  I think he is but I also thought the Colts would have worked out a long term deal with him last season to avoid having to dealing with him this off-season too.  The fact that he didn't tells me Grigson is at least open to maybe moving on from McAfee.  Does it mean they will?  I hope they don't but I am not going to be completely blown away by it if it happens.

    • The closer we are getting to the draft the more I see Turner being projected outside the top 10. Still, Latu is a gamble - he was medically retired after his sophomore season and told he would never play football again due to a neck injury, Transferred to UCLA and was eventually cleared. He just seems like the type of player who has the goods, but will fall in the draft due to health concerns.
    • There's a lot of analysis to be done here, IMO. I don't know all the answers, but some questions that should be addressed are what's the difference between the success rate of a first round pick and that of a second/third round pick, historically? How do you value that difference? I think I've seen stats that say first rounders are starters at a higher rate than other rounds, but is that influenced by the bias of the team that drafted the player in the first round? (Probably.) It's probably fair to say that the players taken in the first round are more likely to be difference makers than the players taken later, but I think there are position groups where the difference is negligible, and I think WR is one of them.   And then, if you get into a climate where everyone is selling in the first round, then the value probably flips at some point.    Also, I don't necessarily think of the draft as a crap shoot. Yes, it's arbitrary, but I think some front offices are good at drafting, and some are bad at drafting; but the difference isn't as wide as general perception would indicate. And there are lots of dependent variables -- coaching, health, etc. -- that influence the outcome of each pick.    I do think more picks is the way to go to maximize value. But to build the best roster? That's a different arm of the discussion. Like you said later on, we've been trading down, and we don't have a great roster.    You also make a good point about the rookie contract vs trading for an established player, and that's not to be ignored. But my point is that if you're going to base your appetite for risk on your level of conviction in the player, I'd rather take the big swing on the established player than on a draft prospect, despite the difference in contract status. The ideal mix is to target a second or third year WR so you can at least get some of the rookie contract. Ballard reportedly asked for Jaylen Waddle and Christian Watson last year.
    • I really don’t see that type of Defensive player in this draft. But there’s always surprises. But I agree, we’ve got to go offensive fire power this year. At least in the first.
    • If they want to beat the Texans they will
    • I don’t think we’ll address the DL at all in rounds 1-4. I think we’re happy with who we have currently and will give the new DL coach a chance to see what he thinks over the next season.
