Confused. What's the whole point of releasing them if they are set to become FA's anyway?

Freeney was not "released" since hes set to be a FA. They just pretty much told him they aren't going to resign him. Collie on the other hand was released.

Freeney must indeed be the square peg....Austin is just a true shame for such a talented guy decimated by injuries.  Two of my favorite Colts of all time.....a sad day for the old linebacker!!!

They were just told they are not going to be re-signed.

Sad news, but neither guy surprises me. They were both fun and exciting to watch! As a former DE, Freeney was an idol of mine in high school... Thank you both from the bottom of my heart!

Collie was signed to a 4 yr. contract in 2009, so he is a FA too. So, both of them were bid adieu without re-signing.

Bleacher Report also cited the Kravitz tweet. Not released, but told they wouldn't be signed.

it's a courtesy so they can start looking for a new gig before free agency begins

technically they are not free agents until march 12th when free agency starts. so they were still on the team and therefor released.

Right call on both players......Freeney was a great player, but at his age and given the current defensive system isn't worth what he's gonna want to be paid.

Hopefully he can go someplace else and have a nice end to his career.

Sad news, but not surprising.

Thanks for everything Dwight. You've been the heart and soul of our defense for years. You'll always be a Colt.

Best of luck.

Collie was Great over the middle.

Larry Foote that was some Forearm smash followed by the knee to the head. No penalty, No Fine.

That was $1.166 Million a tackle OR $2.8 Million a sack. And they still had me worried. TY Jim & Grigs.

Best of Luck to both.  It sure will be weird to not see ol' 93 chasing the QB.

I think we shall say a big "Thank You!" for both guys.

Freeney doesn't fit the new system, and Collie...I think he shall retire.

Good luck boys! It was a honor rooting for you!

Sorry to see Freeney go, he has been my favorite defensive player for years. Having said that, it is absolutely the right move not to re-sign him. Good luck #93 wherever you end up

I find it hard to believe Freeney was "Very surprised."

This was coming all year IMO.

I feel that guys like Bob Sanders and Austin who contributed so much...only to have careers shortened deserve the love too.....

Poor old Steve Emtman would have been a beast too....not sure on Trev Alberts...:)

True shame about both.

Both were incredible talents and played their hearts out week in week out. #17 and #93 will always be greats in our eyes.

Such sad news for Austin Collie, but that move is for the best. I would rather see the man walk away than be carried off the field again. Freeney was a great player for a lot of years.

Wound up not being about the money. I thought it was all offseason, but I was wrong. The dead cap hit would have been $5m. We carried him for $19m. I still think it was a mistake.

Again, let me reiterate, Freeney and Collie were not released (both are FA), both were told they would not be retained.

    • biggest need, O-line or defense
100 % O-line. With Luck being pummeled every single year and running backs being hit in the backfield more times than not, the O-line is as bad as some people think
    • Colts expected to release Andre Johnson and Trent Cole
Not to disagree, but Mack got that huge payday because Jacksonville had so much cap space, they put an outrageous offer sheet out for him. Cleveland did not want to lose one of their few good players, and also had huge cap space, so they matched the offer. Mack was smart in making sure he got guaranteed money in the first two years, and he could not be franchised after his 2nd year if he wanted to opt out of his contract. After so many years with a loser, I think winning will be his main interest. I don't think he takes a low contract, but he will not look to max out. 30 is not old, plus center is a position of such importance I would love to have him for 2-3 years and find someone younger to mentor. Hopefully Chud. can help play a role there. I would be happy to pay 7-9M/yr. for someone who has been a quality center, and will be excited to be on a winning team! Of course, this is jmo!
    • Cam's Gold MVP Cleats
Yes, that's true Bill went to Baltimore & Green went to AZ, but usually when coaching staffs win a ring especially on an offensive juggernaut like the Vikings were that year a ton of offers typically pours in meaning both Bill & Denny Green might have landed in different cities as respective HC's.    But then we would have all missed on on Green's "Crown Their Caboose Bears Rant" & Brian's "kick in the door like a wild warrior" defensive rant as well. So, it worked out okay I guess.
    • Colts Odds to Win SB 51
I always like to look at the odds before FA & the Draft for next year's Superbowl. Vegas is the one person who does not have a horse in the race, they just look for equal bets on everyone, so you can look at it with some cold hard logic. If you look at it as Power Rankings before FA & the Draft, we are 10th. I think that is pretty fair. Surprised to see where a couple teams are. Dallas seems very high for someone who is drafting 4th. Houston at +4200 seems low. AFC South not looking too good, but I do see improvement on the horizon. I think everyone took steps forward this year. It will be interesting to see where we are at after the draft. Only 6 short months until pre-season games. Thank god for the Combine, the Draft, and mini Camps. Helps with the withdraw symptoms!!!!!   Any thoughts on the odds below:   Arizona +1000 Atlanta +4800 Baltimore +3600 Buffalo +4200 Carolina +800 Chicago +5500 Cincy +1500 Cleve. +20000 Dallas +1600 Denver +1000 Detroit +5200 GB      +1000 Houston +4200 Indy      +1600 Jack.    +8200 K.C      +2200 L.A.      +4800 Miami   +5600 Minn.    +2400 N.E.      +700 N.O.      +6500 NYG      +4800 NYJ        +4000 Oak.       +5500 Phil.        +3800 Pitt.         +900 S.D.         +5800 S.F.           +9000 Seattle      +850 T.Bay        +8200 Tenn.        +20000 Wash.       +4500
