Coaching Changes Thread

Here we go:

I was listening to ESPN radio tonight and heard some interesting rumors.

1.  Eagles will/have fired Reid.  He expects them to make a strong push for either Chip Kelly or Bill O'Brien.  If they can't land either of them he expects them to go after an OC and listed Kyle Shanahan and BA to be the favorites of those.

2.  Chargers will dump Norv and AJ Smith.  He thinks BA will be offered the job there but I had heard they were interested in Reid.

3.  Browns are making a change.  He thinks they will go after O'Brien and if they can't get him he thinks they will want Josh McDaniels from New England and said he expects the Browns to try to bring in Ryan Mallett as well if they land one of those two.

4.  Jets will fire their OC but not Rex Ryan.

5.  Ken Whisenhunt could be in danger in Arizona because he expects the GM to go.

6.  Jags will fire their GM which could put their coach on the hot seat.

7.  KC he said he can't get a read on but he thinks if the GM goes Romeo goes as well.  He said it's expected if changes are made that Bill Polian will be the new GM there.

8.  Lions he said the GM and Schwartz will probably keep their jobs due to the fact that the Lions owners wont want to pay that much money to people not coaching this coming year.

Good. I was looking for a thread.  Black Monday has come at last.

1. Chip Kelly would be very interesting.

2. It has been a long time coming for Norv.  Continues to underachieve with roster.

3. Will the Browns ever turn it around? It seems like they blow up the organization every year.

4. I really thought they would fire Rex.   Maybe they give him another year.

5. I understand if a new GM comes in, they want "their guy", but Whisenhunt has probably done the best he can with the pieces he's got.  Deserves another year unless the new GM already has someone in mind.

6. Same as above. GMs should be able to clean house.

7. Same as above. Better coordinator than head coach.

8. I've never really cared for Schwartz.  3 seasons below .500.  50/50 on firing him.

I'd fire him but I am not shocked the Lions wont.  It's clear the Lions biggest problem is that they are undisciplined and that's a direct result of coaching.  I think they should also look around to teams like the Chargers who for years had more talent than any other team in the league and couldn't get it done based on talent alone and see that as a warning.

With that said the Lions owners are a reason to love Jim Irsay if you are a Colts fan.  Look at the reason they said they wont make the change they don't want to pay them not to coach.  That's just being cheap.  They care more about a profit off of the Lions than they do winning and losing.  That's why I like Irsay not all of his moves will turn to Gold but turning a profit and having a losing team will never be good enough for Irsay he will always keep trying to make his team better till they win.

That made my day. I'd be able to see the sparks all the way here in New Mexico. :)

There will be enough smoldering that you could take off in a hot air balloon in Albuquerque with it (btw, I went to school there, I am a Lobo, though it was for my masters).

Cool :) and once a Lobo, always a Lobo. Unfortunately they haven't done all that well the past few years, football wise.

I agree with your comments about being cheap and appreciate that our owner cares more about winning. Anyone with that pathetic of a reason to hang on to coaches doesn't deserve to own a team IMO. I feel for the Lions fans. Look how long they hung on to Matt Millen when it was obvious to everyone that he was a lousy GM.

Keep in mind......a coaching not getting fired today does not mean he will not be fired. In the case of Rex Ryan, I am assuming ownership is going to leave the decision to the new General Manager. If the GM is getting fired, chances are that the coach may be next.

Excellent points regarding Detroit.

IMO....Jim Schwarz should have been at the top of the list today. He commands ZERO respect from a locker room stocked with ample talent to win AT LEAST 9-10 games.....but enough undisciplined and out of control enough to embarrass themselves, which they did this season.

In the NFL.com article, it says that the owner has explicitly stated that Rex Ryan will stay.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000119915/article/mike-tannenbaum-out-as-jets-gm-rex-ryan-still-coach

Johnson made it clear that the next Jets GM would not be able to hire a new head coach.

However, the same has not been said about Mike Mularkey so I could definitely still see him being fired when the Jags find their new GM.

I'm surprised Mularkey still has a job in Jacksonville.  I never thought he was a good choice for HC.  Lovie should have been fired years ago.  Crennel is not cut out to be a HC, but he is a very good DC, so I don't expect him to have much trouble finding another job

I just hope Crennel does not go back to the Pats. :)

But he wont have Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy and Rodney Harrison to work with in the secondary, plus wont have Bruschi, Vrable and McGinnest in the front 7 :).

I love this day! It's always so much fun! Not the part with the men losing their jobs and effecting their families, the part about new major people in the league

Even from a financial perspective. These guys for the most part are fired with money on the table, that they will still collect.  Getting fired would be tough for anyone, but in some cases they will be paid 6 to 7 figures to work elsewhere or to sit in front of a camera, or nothing at all.

    • Tobin did an excellent job...r.i.p
    • https://www.nfl.com/news/bill-tobin-longtime-nfl-executive-dies-at-age-83   He drafted some all time great players like Harrison, and of course is famous for his verbal match with Mel Kiper. RIP!
    • Then begs the question. Do u want to say draft a MJH at 4 and turn around in 4 years or would u say draft Turner and pay him 30mill in 4 years? All day every day for the franchise rush end. I am not a big believer in 30 mill for a wr. Reid is a fantastic coach and look what he did with Hill.
    • I literally just posted that clip, it's where the conversation about QBs started.
    • Funny you brought this up.  I just listened to an interview Ballard did today with Rich Eisen.  He asked him if he has given any thought on how many quarterbacks will be taken before our pick and how many does he think.  He said sure we go through those evaluations.  It helps us with for planning purposes.  He asked him how many.  4 or 5 or 6?   He laughed out loud at 6.  He said Rich if it’s 6 we will be so excited.  Let’s hope so.  He also said the draft board is not yet set.  Won’t be until the night before the draft.  He also said he has had multiple conversations with other GM’s concerning the draft.  Preparing themselves for opportunities that could take place.  And they will continue up until the draft starts.  He said trade conversations won’t really materialize until you are within three picks of any trade.  Giving you time to finalize it.  Interesting interview.  Oh he pretty much ruled out moving up for Harrison.   Going up into the top of the draft would be very costly for him he said.  Thinks he’s a great talent but he thinks he’s pretty much out of our reach.
