Nnamdi Asomugha

Recommended Posts

Depends on the defense we run.  Nnamdi did much better on one side of the field and I believe Oakland ran a zone defense whereas Philly runs a man-to-man defense.

Other way around. Nnamdi played better as a man-to-man, but right now he's playing zone and sucking at it. Nnami/Davis would be a great tandem.

Naw you have it mixed up...Oakland was man to man...Pagano was the DB's coach at the time...Philly is zone.

My mistake.  I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right haha

Doesn't sound like Nnamdi wants to leave Philly and will even be willing to take a pay cut to stay there

Yeah I just saw that...I wonder if that's fear speaking because he's 31 and just want work. I'm also wondering what effect Andy Reid's presence has on that

True.  But I think many people know that he wasn't in the right system in Philly.  If he was to be released, I think he would still have a decent number of teams wanting to sign him.  He has never had any character issues, never been a problem on or off the field, never been questioned about his work ethic, etc.

Agreed. I just feel like if it comes down to it he'll come here because of the relationship. Chuck seems to be quite an effective recruiter along with the relationship with Grigs

From what I've seen, Chuck is the BEST recruiter out there.  I honestly feel that whomever Grigson and Pagano want, they will get.

Remember, a lot of the guys Grigs/Pags recruited weren't all that highly coveted.   Some were, like Reggie, but he wanted to come back.

This time around, we'll likely be going after much bigger fish.   They'll have more options and some of them may be for more money than we're willing to spend.    In short, the recruiting will be different this time around.

Just some food for thought....

I'd say he's definitely worth a look. I think he'd be great in our man cover scheme and a great tandem with Davis. And wed be reuniting him with the DB coach that helped to make him one of the top shutdown corners in football. Only rub I can see is his price tag, if we can get him to a reasonable and justifiable deal, then I'd say definitely pick him up.

Absolutely Not! His skills as a CB, or glaring lack thereof, were exposed under Andy Reid's tenure in Philadelphia. He's no Asante Samuel IMO. I don't want him in INDY at all.

The weird thing HOF CB & Safety Rod Woodson  is actually coaching in Oakland. Perhaps, Nnamdi should go back for a refresher course.

If Nnamdi gets cut, sign me up to work on a website like nnamdiacolt.com or something to get him to come here. If he gets cut, he'll be #2 on my wish list, Jairus Byrd being #1. Just thinking of what GCG5150 mentioned, Vontae and Nnamdi paired with Bethea and Byrd... WOW.

Your signing Jarius Byrd suggestion sounds fantastic to me Steagles. I can certainly support that plan of action 100% Steagles!

I gotta disagree with you on this one SW.....

He did have a poor year last year, but that was due to the fact that they were having him play zone coverage regularly. He is the quintessential press corner, and this year they're letting him play his style. There isn't a better guy in the league at jamming his man at the LOS and blanketing him on his route. He's never been a 'numbers' kinda guy, teams just don't throw his direction. Unfortunately for him, he played most of his career in Oakland, and then he went to an even more dysfunctional franchise in Philly.

I would honestly drain my bank account to get him here in Indy.....lucky for me I'd only lose about $80. :)

Perhaps, you are right Peytonator. Maybe it was zone vs man to man in Oakland. And yes, Philadelphia's defense was completely dysfunctional. I often wonder what defensive mastermind Jim Johnson would have done with Nnamdi in his scheme if he was still alive...Intriguing...

That's an interesting thing to think about. I can't pretend to know a lot about Jim Johnson's defensive style, but he definitely got a lot out of his defenses. It's impossible to compare an Asante Samuel type corner to a Nnamdi Asomugha type. They play the exact opposite type of coverage, but there is no denying that with the right defensive mind, they could have formed the nastiest CB tandem in the NFL.

I think Nnamdi would be an interesting option if he is released if he can be signed by a resonable contract. Althougth there are complaints from the Eagles fans about his run support (or lack there of). There was even someone on a Eagles fan site tthat was doing an analyis of his play, and they showed were a receiver pushed him down the field 30 yards on a run to his side. Not sure this is normal or not, but no matter how good your coverage skills are that would be a problem.

theres worse proble

I feel kinda bad for Nnamdi though. In Oakland, he was feared by the vast majority of OC's in the NFL, but since arriving in Philadelphia, he is no longer feared at all...A strange turn of events really...Cream of the crop to bottom of the barrel...

there are worse problems then nnamdi not being thought of as the shutdown corner he was in oakland, but i still think he probably is one just playing in the wrong scheme in philly but if put in the right one he'd succeed like before

Just curious really, would you play Byrd at SS alongside Bethea??

Nnamdi would be great but taking age into account, I'd rather have Rodgers-Cromartie.  With Pagano's influence and motivation, I think DRC would/could become one of the best CB's in the league.  Pair him next to Davis and we have possibly the best CB tandem in the league.  Goldson would be a great addition as well.  We do definitely have to address the OL in free agency too though.

I'd take him in a heartbeat.  I'd even consider trading a conditional late-round pick to get him at his current contract which is $15M next year ($4M guaranteed) and $12M unguaranteed in 2014 and 2015.

Yes.

Even take that $15m base salary and convert some into a bonus to lower his cap hit, if necessary. There's no signing bonus on his contract ($9m roster bonus, the highest I can recall seeing), which gives his team a bunch of flexibility. Of course, the Eagles will probably do something like that.

I don't understand all this noise about him not being good. They're misusing him in a zone scheme, when he's one of the best man cover guys in the league. This is what the pundits said when he signed there, that he wouldn't be the same because of the scheme. Another head scratching move by Andy Reid. In Pagano's defense, Nnamdi would be a top ten corner, easily.

    • I think if the Colts get a WR in the top-50 picks, or so,  I think the Colts would agree with you.
    • welp, after another week of developments, rumors, and predictions…here is where I stand:   1.  My personal top 5 for our first has not changed.  Mitchell, Arnold, Turner, BTJ, Bowers are still who id be ok with picking at 15.  I’ve said it before, but this is one of the most “it can go any way for us” drafts I’ve witnessed for us in a long time, if not ever.     2.  With the rumors of us looking to trade up, I AM ALL FOR IT.  It’s ok to play it safe and build your team, but that gets mediocrity.  We need to go out and get a guy.  A player we KNOW that will be elite or very good.  Not one that we hope can do that.  I think MHJ is definitely going to the Cards (if they don’t trade out) so that means either Nabers or Odunze who we’re probably trading for if they fall to 8 or 9.  Id prefer Nabers over Odunze.  Nabers is that blazing separator we desperately need, Odunze is possessive beast, but I feel we already have that with MPJ.  I don’t think trading up for bowers would be worth it.     3.  Trading back is an absolute no for me.  As said above, we have to start getting bonafide players and studs.  If we have a chance to get a bonafide stud, then we shouldn’t give it up.  Trading back and giving up the chance to get someone is lowering the talent level of our first pick.  Let’s get aggressive for once and get OUR guy.  If we can’t, let’s stay put and draft a player who will be VERY good.
    • FYI Castro went back to college at Iowa this upcoming season.  Look for Sebastian in the 2025 NFL Draft.
    • Like most QBs they need a safety blanket to throw to and that can be a TE.  Draft rumor-mill already in full circulation with news that the Colts want to trade up on Day 1.  Still think it's a long shot to draft a legacy in MHJ reaching P4 with the Cardinals.  A trade up to P8 with Atlanta is probably the most realistic scenario and TE Bowers would be the call-in.  Not sold on most of this year's draftable QBs and doubt 4 or more will be drafted within the top-8 picks.  See the draft play out like every other year where teams can stay and get a serviceable QB.
    • This could very well be the rare year we do trade up on Day 1.  Really shocked if we go after a legacy and the cost might be too rich for the short-term versus draft immediate draft needs.  Now a trade up to say P8 swap with Atlanta has a higher percentage of happening I do feel.  No way going to trade within our division with the Titans at P7.  At P8 should still have one of the top-3 WRs or even better option of drafting a generational TE in Bowers.
