Jim Caldwell can fix Baltimore Ravens' offense in four easy steps

Thanks for the good read.

I'm curious what kind of defense we will use against their no huddle. I'm assuming stopping Ray Rice is the priority #1 but our base defense feels sketchy against run up the middle. Though surprisingly, our rush defense is in top 5. If we can get ahead early, it will give our defense chance to be more aggressive.

Torrey smith is a deep fast threat receiver , & Rice can come out of backfield, Bouldin still good and both TE make a nice combo

Raven Injury's -- all i got for today is,

2 articles

no word on Lewis & suggs but heard suggs practiced, to what degree I dont know

Starting middle linebacker Jameel McClainicon-article-link.gif has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Broncos after suffering a neck/back injury last week against the Redskins.

McClain currently ranks second on the team with 79 tackles, and he has been the anchor in the middle of the defense since veteran Ray Lewisicon-article-link.gif went down with a torn triceps muscle in Week 6. The Ravens could potentially get Lewis back on the field this week, but Harbaugh did not indicate how good of a chance he has to play.

Dannell Ellerbeicon-article-link.gif, who started at inside linebacker when Lewis went down, is also dealing with an injury (ankle) and has missed the last two games. It’s also unknown if he will be able to return this weekend.

If the Ravens are without McClain, Lewis and Ellerbe, then Brendon Ayanbadejo and Josh Bynes will take the bulk of the reps at inside linebacker. Albert McClellan who has started at outside linebacker, could also move inside to help provide some depth in the middle of the defense.

I'm obviously just guessing here, but I bet you were a heck of a doctor back in the day, judging by your overall character and what you bring to this board every day!

Appreciate that remark , both parts

I will put it this way as far as being a good Dr

WAS I THE BEST NO,

ONE Of THE BEST WAS & IS in the entire country MY FRIEND

WITH many more years experience and who i learned the most from as a resident & for whom i waited 5 extra days as wasnt available at first to have reconstructive surgery of incredibly severe ankle fracture and10 years later my other ankle he also did and they both still work pain free , CDC has even consulted with him for certain resistant infections, he now specializes in saving diabetics from full amputations and saving there limbs

HOWEVER FOR ME I WILL TOOT MY OWN HORN YES as am PROUD of all the surgeries I did in my short 6 years of practice, not once did i have to redo any , also as far as I know in that time I am only Dr who didnt have a post op infection result from a surgery, including my friend above , esp on type of cases i did & I bought a practice from someone who , as I saw as a resident was horrendous & was that year forced to leave state so got at great price as had to sell to someone of my quality to cover his mistakes and willing to redo any failed surgeries & opther possibilities that come up as if i redid and went bad then I would be caught up in his lawsuits but if fixed avoided lawsuits for us both, and he had many suits already & as far as I know from what i read in charts once I bought the practice he designed surgeries many times that quarenteed failure and hed get to re do and make more money so got for cheap as I said he had to sell to someone of my quality as said to cover his behind

My first week i had 5 of his ankles to redo, that's unheard of in start of a practice , then got a rep for fixing other surgeons mistakes so got referals, I even had patients of his return to me from all over the country & from as far as Florida referred to me as no surgeon there would touch this diabetic afraid he wouldn't have blood enough to heal,My opinion his small vessels were fine and thats what mattered I did surgery on both feet same time and worked & healed fine & did wet, that is without a tourniquet to avoid compromising his blood vessels so seeing what I was doing wasnt great and much intuitive

DID MANY BIRTH DEFECTS

But best thing to me ever did of all i helped was a 7 year old boy with severe limp from clubfoot who had correct but failed procedure at 2 days old and all Drs ever did was get him shoes with huge wedged heel so his heel can touch floor

I opened up basically all joints in foot and ankle, released or lengthened tight ligaments & joint capsules , took a wedge ofg bone out of his heel and bone in front of it, reposition the 2 and fused them together to starighten foot & ankle *& gait

Once I got disabled he wrote he was now running and scoring for me TD's as I couldnt myself, I have many stories like that

I credit my fathers dedication to hios special ed students and way he & my mother brought nme up for the way I cared about patients and thats why I was good, I demanded perfection from myself and the hospital new it

Thats all mI have to get off now, ,have a good night Eric , Barry

New Offensive Coordinator Jim Caldwell Has Players' Respect

Caldwell has explained that he doesn’t plan to institute any major changes, but he is a proponent of the up-tempo offense and some of the players noticed a difference during Wednesday morning’s .

"I wouldn’t say it’s really any major changes, it more just the attitude about the way your approach it,” Smith said. "Everything is up-tempo. Everything is, ‘you’re going to do it right the first time.’ He’s doing a great job of drilling that in already in two meetings. We’re looking forward to the difference. We saw a difference in walk through today. If anything else, it’s a different change in terms of the energy level with a different coordinator.”

Caldwell has started to put his stamp on the offense, and the focus now for the players is to capitalize on their opportunities regardless of who calls the plays.

"He’s definitely taking charge and it’s definitely on us to follow his lead and make the plays,” Smith said. "[The switch] means we’re serious about something. Obviously our leaders at the top felt that a move needed to be made, being that they made the move, so it’s on us to make it the best move."

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. I remember Brendon Ayanbadejo at UCLA long time ago. I guess Rush is rush linebacker in 3-4.

I don't want them to push Kuper and Woodyard...

This game is going to be a struggle either way. The Broncos have looked good but not great during their current streak, but all that truly matters is the W/L. They will need to do a better job on red zone possessions than they did against the Raiders. The Ravens are not a bunch of clowns (like Oakland) who will hurt themselves at critical moments with boneheaded penalties and breakdowns. Smaller margin for error there, so we'll see what happens.

Because the game is in Baltimore, and because the Ravens are desperate after losing two straight (and throw in any emotional lift they get from Suggs/Lewis)... I'm leaning toward Baltimore in this one. Something like 24-20.

GoPats, you know how much I respect your analysis, instincts, & high football I.Q., but Jim Caldwell is the Ravens OC now. To be kind, he is severely lacking in this Dept. In addition, as our former HC of the Colts, he often failed to make timely adjustments as well. The "Grey Hoodie" Caldwell isn't I'm afraid. But, you point about the need to improve the Broncos red zone scoring capability ever since RB McGahee got hurt is a valid point my friend.

Score: Broncos 27 Ravens: 21

Actually, for Manning his biggest concern is DT Haloti Ngata. DE Terrell Suggs can rush the passer still but given his tendon arm injury he can't really grab anyone either.

Jim Caldwell is not the answer on offense Baltimore sorry. I don't buy the current love feast for Jim in Maryland fellas...

Ravens mat be better offwithout a OC & thats wwhy picked Jim, he just telling them things that he saw Peyton do to add some nuanaces to earlier year no huddle that worked, basically he is there as a change saying do the no huddle, now its ok to go back to it, its a spark for them, thats about it

If game comes dwn to in game situational awareness that he must adjust then yes he is truly lost

as he never caalled plays in his NFL career its new to him to he may be lucky first time out , like he was 1st year with peyton on a tear till they pulled the plug on a perfect season

AS I ALREADY POINTED OUT in comment to same gopats thread as u

Red zone efficiency needs to be better than last game, alot of that is if Kuper returns and his effectiveness as Ramirez just lets defenders in and if remember right allowed 2 sacks while in red zone on 3rd downs last week as well as multiple uncovered personnel often pressure peyton or get moreno right after the hand off , in fact the IT came on pressure and a hit on Peytons arm in act of throwing so under thrown while quite close to the red zone

Rice must also be contained

Ravens as u said are desperate and if does rain as they project I think that also may favor ravens

Thanks for your viewpoint

and as already posted here are the stats to show it

Broncos-Ravens: Top priority for Denver is improving pass protection

From It

Of Manning's 19 sacks this season, 17 have come with Kuper not in the lineup and Manny Ramirez on the field in place of the Broncos' offensive captain.

((( to me thats more than miscommunication as Fox Says in the article, to me thats a Ramirez problem )))

Peyton Manning's former coach running the Ravens' offense now

Manning's previous head coach with the Indianapolis Colts was Jim Caldwell, who this week replaced Cameron as the Ravens' offensive coordinator. Manning learned about the intricacies of running the no-huddle offense through Caldwell — or is that other way around?

"He was very organized, very detail-oriented, which I'm a fan of that philosophy," Manning said of Caldwell. "He and I

got into a good routine in meetings and on the practice field every day for the time we were together when he was my quarterbacks coach. I really felt he took my game to another level."

It has been widely speculated in print and by network analyst panels that Cameron lost his job in part because his relationship with Flacco was strained and also because there would be times when star running back Ray Rice seemed to disappear.

With Cameron gone, the onus falls on Flacco to assume leadership of the Ravens' offense. He is widely considered a top-10 quarterback talent, yet he ranks 15th on the league's passing chart.

And while there are games when Flacco can carry his team, he has had four games this season when he posted a quarterback rating below 67.0. Manning has had only one such clunker this year.

Manning: Baltimore 'Certainly' Warrants Attention

In fact, Baltimore boasts the No. 1 unit in the league in red-zone defense.

"Being the top defense in the red zone tells you a lot about their team -- they tighten up when it really counts, and they’re creating a lot of turnovers," Manning said. "That's our challenge this week, is trying to win against that."

Lewis, Suggs Could Be Back for Ravens

Quarterback Peyton Manning said it's Lewis' leadership that brings the most to his defense, not to mention his play-making ability.

“His intensity and his passion, it’s real," Manning said. "I’ve always kind of kidded Ray, he is just as intense and passionate in the fourth quarter of the fourth preseason game as he is in the first quarter of a playoff game. It’s real. That’s pretty special and that’s pretty unique. Some guys can turn it on in the big games. He always has it on. Every time I’ve played against him, which has been a bunch, I have great respect for the way he prepares for the game mentally. But his intensity and passion and spirit over there, it’s real and it’s contagious for his teammates, which is a great quality.”

The Broncos could see that up close and personal on Sunday.

"For him to fight off the injury and be back in time to play this season, that just speaks on the type of guy that he is and the type of work ethic that he has," linebacker Von Miller said. "Of course, Ray Lewis is one of the greats. I looked up to him when I was younger and I still look up to him now.”

So Caldwell is expected to put the ball into Rice's hands more this week.

People around the NFL believe that and the Broncos certainly believe that.

"Oh definitely I think they're going to look to use Ray Rice more," is how safety Jim Leonhard put it. "He's a difficult match-up because of all the things he can do."

Rice will stress the Broncos linebackers and safeties plenty in pass coverage and he continues to trouble defenses in the running game.

Actually that's an intriguing part of this game. Cleeland was dumped because he failed to consistently get enough touches for Ray Rice. Will Caldwell do the same? I don't know much about the guy as a coordinator... clearly he wasn't head coaching material, but will Harbaugh basically dictate the play-calling anyway? Hard to say. Articles this week have suggested that the change will result in a more aggressive Ravens offense, but that could go either way for them. Flacco is so inconsistent that an aggressive game plan could work out in their favor or it could work out against them and he'll end up throwing a couple of picks or losing a fumble. One thing's for sure, the Ravens will have no shot if they turn the ball over more than one or two times.

I fear Ray Rice a bit. He is the reason why we must get ahead quickly and make them one dimensional. We should be able to do it. We are getting better in all facets, but our defense has been particularly strong the last 3 games or so. I'm sure our offense is focusing on fixing the disappointing red zone results of the last game. I think they are looking to fire on all cylinders the last quarter of the season.

I think Jim Caldwell is smart enough to pound the rock & give Ray Rice as many touches as possible. But, even in INDY between Manning & Caldwell, the control breakdown felt like 80% Manning & 20% Caldwell in terms of who was really guiding or leading who. Sure future HOF QBs tend to carry coordinators & make them look better than they are, but at least Josh McDaniels won as HC in Denver initially beating his old boss Belichick in a well executed game. My point is that I'm not so sure that Caldwell can pull it off.

But, like you say HC John Harbaugh & OB Joe Flacco bear some responsibility here for solid execution on the field regarding the game's final outcome. Personally, I think losing Ray Lewis their emotional leader & compass for that team pretty much tanked their Championship dreams this season. I doubt they will even make the Playoffs. Not good since this is the final year of Flacco's rookie contract either.

woodyard, Kuper moving better today , stockely appearing more fluid even thouigh wasnt on injury list yesterday

After having not caught a pass in two weeks because of a hip issue, Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley appeared to be moving around well Thursday during the early portion of practice.

He was active last week at Oakland but was used situationally and did not record a reception.

Also appearing to move well during the early segment of Thursday's practice were linebacker Wesley Woodyard and offensive guard Chris Kuper. Both were listed during Wednesday's practice as limited with ankle injuries.

Injuries Taking A Toll On Ravens Defense

But how much of that is because of injuries?

Three examples from Sunday’s game in Washington illustrate how the Ravens are hurting.

As the Washington Redskins were driving down the field for the potential game-tying score, they faced a third-and-5 from the Ravens’ 11-yard line. Rookie backup quarterback Kirk Cousins took the snap and rolled to his right.

Johnson, who the Ravens signed off the street just three weeks earlier, was covering the Redskins’ top receiver, Pierre Garcon, because two of Baltimore’s top cornerbacks, Lardarius Webbicon-article-link.gif (knee) and Jimmy Smithicon-article-link.gif(sports hernia), are out.

Johnson jumped the route thinking the Redskins were trying to pick up the first down and that he had help behind him. He didn’t. He was beat by Garcon for an easy 11-yard touchdown pass.

“I’ve played the same defense in Oakland where we did have help over the top,” Johnson said. “It’s the same call, but they play it different in different places. I should have asked before that play what was going on, but I was expecting the same type of coverage.”

On the next play, Washington lined up for a two-point conversion. Cousins scrambled right up the middle and into the teeth of Baltimore’s banged-up inside linebackers.

The first person to hit him was safety Ed Reed – once Cousins was already in the end zone. Veteran special teams ace Brendon Ayanbadejoicon-article-link.gif and Josh Bynesicon-article-link.gif, who spent nearly all of last year on the practice squad, were blocked out of the play.

Bynes, a first-year player in his eighth career game, was wearing the mic’d up helmet and communicating the play calls to the rest of the defense for the first time in his NFL career. He and Ayanbadejo were in the game becauseRay Lewisicon-article-link.gif (triceps),Jameel McClainicon-article-link.gif (neck) andDannell Ellerbeicon-article-link.gif (ankle) were all out.

“I’m not Ray Lewis,” Bynes said. “[Ayanbadejo] isn’t Ray Lewis or Ellerbe. He’s Ayanbadejo. I’m Josh Bynes. And that’s who we’re going to play like.”

NFL NETWORK this AM says RAY Lewis practiced yesterday on a LTD basis , if so he should have been reported on the injury list

I love LB Ray Lewis as a person & HOF player, but he's no spring chicken anymore, & I want him to take the rest of the season off to mend, heal, & get better. No one would ever question his commitment, resolve, intelligence, & toughness.

Contrary to popular belief in another thread called "Manning praises Caldwell", I have no ill will toward Jim Caldwell. I would actually like to see him flourish in Baltimore just not against #18 though.

I wonder if all these Ravens injuries will help or hurt QB Joe Flacco's contract negotiations in the offseason? It could go either way I suppose...Prove your worthiness based on limited weapons around you or since you lost so many players you can't be expected to win crucial games all by yourself. It will be interesting to see how the owner Steve Bisciotti interprets his quarterback's situation regarding his 2nd contract in the NFL.

If game comes down to in game situational awareness that he must adjust then yes he is truly lost

as he never caalled plays in his NFL career its new to him to he may be lucky first time out , like he was 1st year with peyton on a tear till they pulled the plug on a perfect season

Thank you Barry! This is all I was trying to say regarding Caldwell: "If game comes down to in game situational awareness that he must adjust then yes he is truly lost." A weakness in the area of situational awareness & because of that others have implied or directly stated that I hate Caldwell or view his tenure in INDY in an unflattering, somehow untruthful light. Simply ridiculous IMHO.

Have a feeling the HC may actually call some plays or at least give his input on situational handling, as he is the HC and thats when we all saw Caldwell make those crazy calls

Yeah, you are probably right Barry. John Harbaugh will probably take over the reins or at least supervise how well Flacco & Caldwell are moving the ball downfield. I agree 100% We all have weakness. I suck at Math, but you wouldn't hire me to do your taxes just because I'm a nice guy now would Ya? haha My point is as long as you don't require Caldwell to master 3rd & long situations all by himself with zero oversight at all Caldwell will be a sufficient OC.

Jim Caldwell plans to bring pace and collaboration to Ravens offense

New coordinator says he'll lean on other coaches as he calls plays for the first time in the NFL

2 page article with video

"One of the things you look at and certainly understand is that anytime you've been coaching quarterbacks, the offense runs through you," Caldwell said Thursday. "There's not anything that you should not know if you have a good sense of it if you are coaching the quarterbacks. You are involved in every situation. It's not just third down, it's not just first and second down. It's also short-yardage, goal-line, you name it."

Where Caldwell is expected to trigger a shift from Cameron is through his stronger chemistry with Flacco and his willingness to accept input and feedback from assistant coaches, which is something a control-oriented Cameron was resistant to throughout his five-year tenure, according to multiple sources.

Caldwell has expressed his enthusiasm about getting guidance from other coaches, including Hostler, running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery, offensive line coach Andy Moeller, tight ends coach Wade Harman, head coach John Harbaugh and senior offensive assistant Craig Ver Steeg.

When Caldwell was in Indianapolis, the Colts' offense ran smoothly as he, quarterback Peyton Manning and longtime offensive coordinator Tom Moore collaborated on ideas.

"I think it's huge," said Caldwell, who was hired by the Ravens in the offseason after being fired following a dreaful final season in Indianapolis, which Manning missed with a neck injury. "Obviously, [the other Ravens coaches] they've been in this system for a long time. They have a real good understanding of it.

"They are fine technicians, but they also have a great, great grasp of strategy and technique and things of that nature. We've done that all along just in terms of divvying up responsibility and things of that nature, probably even more so now."

Another trait Caldwell has already displayed is a desire to create an up-tempo offense through utilizing a no-huddle offense popular with Flacco and other offensive players. It has effectively been scrapped in recent games after a considerable investment of time and energy during the offseason and preseason.

Several players said they expect Caldwell to not be hesitant to use the no-huddle, given the right situation.

"We're going to play fast and do the things we do best," fullback Vonta Leach said. "He's been very informative about what direction, what he wants to do. ... He should add a spark."

For Caldwell, it's about striking a balance between Flacco's desire to strike deep, which hasn't worked consistently this season, and following a smash-mouth strategy behind the proven legs of Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice.

"One of the good things about our system is the fact that it's versatile," Caldwell said. "We can do whatever it takes. It just depends on who we are playing, how we want to attack them and what we think best suits our personnel. We kind of bounce in and out of it, but every game will take on its own personality."

Yup, clock management, or the lack thereof, is certainly an integral part of a HC's success or shortcomings; No doubt about it. Wasting time outs is never a good thing in any professional sport that's for sure.

Nice video there. I like what Caldwell said about leaning on other coaching for guidance as well as the command structure for how plays are given & distributed to Flacco. Just don't rely on Caldwell exclusively for goal line yardage alone please. Make sure HC John Harbaugh approves the play 1st. Thank you.
