NFL considering removing kickoffs?

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000106654/article/roger-goodell-mulling-over-idea-of-eliminating-kickoffs

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that he's taken it under consideration to remove the kickoff entirely.

"It's an off-the-wall idea. It's different and makes you think differently. It did me," Goodell told TIME in a cover story for the Dec. 17 issue.

Even more intriguing is an alternative concept promoted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano. Goodell met with the NFL competition committee chairman about the concept.

"After a touchdown or field goal, instead of kicking off, a team would get the ball on its own 30-yard line, where it's fourth and 15," TIME's Sean Gregory writes. "The options are either to go for it and try to retain possession or punt. If you go for it and fall short, of course, the opposing team would take over with good field position. In essence, a punt replaces the kickoffs."

It almost feels like George Bush is secretly posing as the commissioner. This dude(goodell) is extremely stubborn, and narrow minded!

I don't like Schiano. I didn't like his move against the Giants and apparently, many other people around the league view him as a guy who is trying to bully everyone else. I'm also not a fan of this 4th and 15 business. It seems like they would be going out of there way to do something complicated that would not have a big impact. If you want to make kick returns safe, I think the CFL has a rule where no defender can be within 5 yards of the returner before the returner has caught the ball. The NFL could try something like that so that returners have a chance to catch the ball and look to see oncoming defenders. Personally, I don't think anything needs to be changed.

Eventually they will get rid of the kick off, you can put money on that. They will blame it on "safety" just like everything else.

I wonder what Belichick would think of that. He'd like to get rid of the extra point because it's boring and almost automatic. He actually cares about fan entertainment.

I forget his actual substitute but it was either the ball place 10 or 20 yd line and kick a short FG or run a 2 point conversion. Certainly more stategic and uncertanity in the score thus more entertaining as he puts it.

i think the team that scores gets the ball at their owm 30 with a choice to go 4 it with 4th & 15 and keep the ball again if u make it , if u dpont make it the other team has great field position, or u punt instead of kickoff

PLEASE DONT DO THIS

He must stay up at nighht thinking of crazy stuff to change the game

im for it. get rid of kickoffs. they go into the back of the endzone or get kneeled down anyway since htey moved the kick off to the 35 yard line. .

2011: 50.3 percent kick returns

2010: 80.4 percent kick returns

big drop off

Touchbacks:

2011: 43%

2010: 14%

and it only got worst this year. so throw it out. or just punt the ball down the field instead of kicking off like they do on kicks after safeties.

that is the reason they moved the kickoffs to the 35 in 2011. to minimize concussions. and it worked. the concussion rate dropped 20 % from 2010. but so did the returns. returns went from an avg of 80% every year since 2002 to 50% starting in 2011 and touchbacks (kneel downs) went up from an avg of 14% since 2002 to 43% starting in 2011. i really dont see the big deal in getting rid of it.

example: Colts score Touchdown, get extra point.....Titans get the ball starting at the 20 yard line on their own side of the field as if the ball was kicked to the back of the endzone. keep the punts.

opening drive for first half: lets say coin toss winner differs the opponent chooses to take the ball place the ball at the 20 on their side of the field and say good luck lol.

2nd half: the team that was on defense first in the first half gets ball on their side of the field at the 20 yard line to start the second half.

Keep punts active for 4th down situations. keep FG's of course. it actually could work.

Apparently, the stats show that punt returns result in fewer injuries than kick returns

Let's just hang flags from their waists and eliminate everything even remotely manly about the sport(sarcasm off).

And that Schiano idea is just absurd.

I don't like Shiano's idea, but I'm all for getting rid of kickoffs. We had a big thread about this a few months back. I consider them to be incredibly boring at best - and that was before the new rules diminished it. However they do serve a purpose. I can think of other ways to make it more interesting and relevant but still safer - with the thought that the goal is to completely avoid the violent collisions between players sprinting at high speed for 50 yards.

How about having both teams line up on the receiving teams 40 yard line, but mandate that the kick has to land in the field of play. The idea being that instead of being motivated to boom it as far as possible, they will be motivated to target a chip shot as close to the goal line as possible - which the receiving team will be obligated to return because there would be no more automatic placement at the 20. Put it in the end zone or out-of bounds, you move back 10 yards and re-kick - but now the ball has to land before the 10 yard line. It would require a completely different skill from the kickers, entirely different strategies, and a guaranteed return on every-play. Make the kicking team spread out their team on the line, the receiving team would probably need 3-4 guys back instead of just that one specialist that everyone covets. They would just have to test it in pre-season to see if the 40 is the place to start that would result in an average starting location comparable to historical standards - if not, change it accordingly. Could be fun. Certainly better. There is absolutely nothing about the current system that I enjoy. Frankly I consider it part of the "snack break" while you are waiting for the action to start again.

There are still injuries on kickoffs, no matter what you do this is a vicious game and you're not going to minimize the concussions and injuries unless you develop better equipment. Instead of Goodell going on these crazy fine sprees every week, they need to do something instead. The players have proved over and over the more you fine them, they are going to do it again, and some of those fines are flat out ridiculous. You barely touch one of these super star quarterbacks and you get slapped with a huge fine (not to mention I've seen lesser known QB"s nearly get killed and no one cares about them).

hey here is an idea, let the guys wear lingere like the women's lingere. if they get rid of kick offs let's just be fair and don't keep score anymore. since they moved the kick-off up, the nfl has lost some luster and they overprotect players now. if they continue ther will come a time there fans will decrease not even maintain levels like now. NHL is seeing the negative effects of a strikr, just wait till contact turns to touch, see if anybody watches then. I have wwatched pro ball since i was 6 (1975) most fans now don't know what arm bars, linking, clubing or the like are; heck most don't know how NFL formed or when there were 12 game seasons. that's why the records seem wow

hahaha!! then what the heck would mason crosby do?? ok but in all seriousness, one big dilemma that I foresee is the fact that you can not block a kickoff where as you can block a punt...just adding that much onto a punters plate adds to the injuries against punters also.

That's the most frustrating thing in the game! Extra point is good, they take a 4 min commercial break. Kickoff and return lasts 8 seconds, they take another 4 min commercial break. I'd be all for removing the kickoff if it would result in continuous play. Extra point is good, the other offense immediately takes the field at like the 25 yard line or something. No stoppage, no commercials, just football.

This is just me going off of memory, but I believe this idea was originally presented in the owners meetings way back in February by someone from the Giants organization. Again, this is off memory and could be wrong, but I know it was talked about before this season. I don't think it was Goodell.

True, but none of us get paid millions to do it or dedicate our lives to it. And no one is making a comment on the toughness of the players. I think those comments are more directed towards Goodell turning the league into something "soft". The players will play by whatever rules the league imposes (with the exception of the Detroit Lions), so I don't think those comments are directed at the players, but more towards the league

Godell is such a hypocrite. Here he is talking about removing an exciting part of the game in the name of "safety," but during the negotiations he and the owners were both pushing hard to increase the number of games in the schedule.

If they want to get rid of anything get rid of the extra point and make everyone go for two.

From what nfl network says,m the propsed change will eliminate part where most injuries occur , thus reduce opposition to 18 game season

still many starters arent all on special teams, QB arms like a 36 yea r old peyton wont last that long if go deep into playoffs

Its unknown now how long peytons arm will last
