The logic against double-teaming Calvin Johnson

When I see CJ play, he is pretty much as effective vs. 2-man or bracket coverage as he is vs. single press coverage...

He's not overly fast....he just goes up above anyone you put on him and grabs the ball..

I'd put Vontae Davis on him (even though he's 6 inches shorter) and send an extra blitzer at Stafford......especially near the goal line and to try to get quick throws......with a heavy rush..

we got Davis to stick the other teams top receiver...let him try it

...there arent a lot of good options agianst the No.1 passer and the No.1 receiver...indoors

what do you think?

I can see your logic, I've seen plenty of footage of Megatron beating out double coverage with his vertical ability. Teams have tried to double Reggie against us this season and it's not always worked.

He's too good be to stopped, at least if you can rush Stafford you might be able to slow him down a little.

It doesn't matter if we assign duct tape and velcro to Megatron. He's going to catch everything and have a monster day against us.

I agree. Send extra pass rushers and hurry Stafford and hope for errant throws.

I use this term loosely.....but I would head hunt with a safety or LB (Time for an Angerer sighting?)......the Lions use the same Mega-tron plays over and over. Freeman will sneak in at least once to get Stafford. I feel a Mathis strip or the first sack ever for D Free against the Lions making an impact.

With the D-line a wreck, we need the disguised and undisguised blitz to hurt the Lions. :colts: :colts: :colts:

Having Vonate back healthy will be the key.

When Vontae has been healthy, he has done a fair job of slowing down receivers.

With Zibby out, either Lefeged or Sergio Brown will definitely have to step up their games tremendously.

And Lefeged has a bad toe too.......is it possible we will see Brown and Delano Howell out there.....? Say it is not so...... :???: :???: :???: :peek:

Near the goal line..I've seen linebackers on Johnson because he's going to jump up over your CB...every time

Mix up the blitzing. CJ has good hands but does not catch everything. I don't see how double coverage will help either, he can just as easily jump over 2 players as 1, it's really up to him if he catches it or not. So lets get the throw off target.

I heard Brian Billick says that its standard operating proceedure in the NFL that you 'rotate' to speed and 'bracket' ability..

meaning you rotate coverage to very fast receivers and double team (bracket coverage, short and deep) a great catcher who isnt as fast

...Still I dont think 2 defenders near Johnson are any better than one if the ball is thrown accurately and high

    • I can too. And that will tell us everything we need to know about how the view him. It will tell us their feelings on the tight end room, and what direction they pick from there will tell us even more.    but if they take him at 15, we won’t know much about what might have happened, as they will be landing someone they had rated highly and fell to them.
    • Glad that’s over…    if I wanted to argue about it, I would have responded far more in depth than pointing out how you were attempting to gaslight me. I did not. Meaning I was ending my part of whatever the argument was. You “putting a finality to it” and then listing bullet points tells me it was the argument you wanted all along, which makes sense why you brought Grigson up in the first place. Bait, hook, gaslight. Almost got me buddy. You are a funny guy, Doug
    • Putting a finality on an argument you want to have.   There is a theory that Ballard won't draft a OL high because ARs injuries were not caused by a poor oline.  I felt it important to note that since Luck's major injuries were also not caused by his oline, Ballard could still want to improve it like he did in 2018 simply because AR is The Franchise. And its important to point that out because there has been a running (false) narrative for about 9 years that Luck's oline was the (main) reason for his injuries that kept him out of games.  The (false) narrative is based upon, IMO, a detest of Grigson, and not reality about the facts (or strong rumors) behind the kidney laceration and snowboarding shoulder. Therefore, mentioning Grigson and the (false) narrative was germain to the point about Ballard possibly drafting Oline high this draft to protect AR. Mentioning Grigson shouldn't trigger a CB vs RG discussion, unless people reading it are gaslighted by their own reading lens.
    • That is a very inaccurate description of what happened.  At this point it’s history and doesn’t need to be revisited but I will say Chloe adds value to this board and should be and is by most encouraged to post, even if people don’t always agree with her.
    • My response was in regards to another posted suggesting that the Colts need to get the pick right when it comes to picking a WR. I agree with you .
