Football Outsider: Colts playoff pretenders

85 posts in this topic

In the AFC South Blog, Paul K made a point about the Colts' opponents' records that made me really start thinking about the accuracy of strength of schedule. He pointed out that if the Colts had not beaten their seven opponents, then their overall record would be 38-39 or .494 (instead of 31-46 or .403). That made me think that if the Colts were worse, their opponents would be better on paper but probably not in reality. Point is, I like stats but they are just one part of the story. However, as I alluded to in an earlier post, if I still had to bet on the Colts winning or losing in the first round of the playoffs, I'd have to go with lose, and I have no problem with that because I never truly expected to be seriously thinking we'd be in the playoffs. I'm just going to keep enjoying the ride!

Hey, I NEVER thought we would beat Green Bay this year either. Maybe by playoff time the Colts are clicking like a well oiled machine.

It's unlikely we win a game... But Tim Tebow and the Broncos did it... It will be good just to be there

Vince Verhei says we are not playoff caliber and destined for a quick and early exit.

That is just a hateful article... the writer totally dismisses what Indy has done.

whatever.... he can watch us on wildcard weekend upset someone.

Why? Indy got blasted by a bad Jet team... what are you gonna do?

Chicago... Indy was in that game into the 3rd Q.

Jax... Indy had it in the bag... HAD....

NE.... Indy was right there at halftime... turnovers and drops killed us.

Why can't this YOUNG team get it done? I think this is a very dangerous team going forward.

Hahaha yeah and the Colts were without Luck for 9 games and we still split the series with them. The Texans narrowly escaped with that win against us too, WITHOUT Luck!!! Not impressive if you ask me. Then they got spanked and embarrassed in the first round of the playoffs. If the Colts boast an improved O line this year with a healthy Luck and a competent offensive coordinator, I think the Colts still have this division. Plus we get Henry Anderson back on D. And Brock is still very largely unproven so there is more question marks there than answers right now.
    • Add 2 players to the Colts- 1 on offense and 1 on defense
Watt Gronk Not very imaginative,  but those are your game wreckers
    • Position Depth Comfort Level
I think the original comment about a backup P/K was a joke since teams don't carry backup kickers in the regular season.  Therefore the depth would be N/A instead of getting an "A" grade, like the OP did.   The starters get an "A", but there are no backup kickers on ANY team to grade for depth...

So because you haven't seen it happen, Vinatieri hasn't punted a football in years, and therefore, couldn't even do it if he had to in a game?    You don't think the Colts have ever practiced for a situation where McAfee gets hurt, and Vinny has to punt?  Have you seen how McAfee hits returners?   You don't think he has punted the ball once in a single practice with the Colts ever?  Because you haven't seen it in camp?
    • Congrats Alexander Rossi
Congrats to Alexander Rossi on becoming the 1st Rookie since Helio Castroneves to win the Indianapolis 500

Hello my Name is Robin. And i'm from Denmark. even though i've been member on this forum for a long time, and the old one as well. I would like to Introduce myself. I became a Colts fan in 2007, when I watched my first NFL game. My brother introduced me to NFL, the superbowl between Colts & Bears, And as we all know the Bears scored first, so I had to rude for the "underdogs".. and from that day on I was hooked. I've watched every game since, even the primetime games, that starts 2:30 in Denmark, it's a long day working with no sleep but damn its worth it. Can't wait for my next big Colts adventure, when I get to see them playing in London

I have been a fan since 1984 when I became an early teen and really started to understand the game. Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984 and eventhough we stunk for a while, things obviously got better. We traded for Dickerson in 1987 and won the Division, then we had Harbaugh's magical season in 1995, the Peyton ERA where winning 12 games was a piece of cake + winning a SB in 2006, now the Andrew ERA where we have already had 3 11 win seasons and a deep Playoff run.
