Starting Charger NT

Aubrayo Franklin expected to miss multiple games

(knee) suffered a bone bruise late in the second quarter

He is "probably going to be out for a couple weeks," coach Norv Turner said Monday afternoon

Nose tackle has proven a better fit for the 6-foot-1, 315-pound run stopper ( switch back to a 3-4 scheme after spending a season in New Orleans' 4-3.) ,

who's been a cog to a Chargers defense that ranks second in the NFL with 82.9 rushing yards allowed a game and tied for second with 3.6 yards allowed per carry.

With Franklin Injured, Run D Will Need to Fill Big Hole

Franklin’s 10-years of intelligence and experience have been invaluable to the entire defensive line. Every member of the unit expressed how much the 6-foot-1, 317-pound nose tackles means to the group and how it will be difficult to replace him while he is out recovering

Said Corey Liuget “We wish him a speedy recovery and want him back out on this field as soon as possible. He helps us out so much it’s almost like having another coach next to me. He communicates and tells me tilts. He pretty much knows what’s going on before the ball is snapped. He knows the percentages, when they like to run the ball or throw it. So he’s been a big help to me and the entire defensive line up front.”

One player who will be relied upon to step up in Franklin’s absence is Antonio Garay , who has only been active for the past two games this season. The 6-foot-4, 320-pounder is a more than capable fill in who has had a strong four-year career here in San Diego

This 1 game = a 3 game swing in position & tiebreaker

I’ve never covered a game that carried a three-game swing as the one will this Sunday between the Broncos and Chargers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Here’s how the game Sunday is worth three:

Win and the Broncos are leading the AFC West with a 7-3 record while the second-place Chargers would fall to 4-6. So that’s a three-game lead for the Broncos. Plus, the Broncos would have swept the Chargers in their two head-to-head meetings this year so Denver would have the tiebreaker. That means the Chargers would have to make up four games on the Broncos to win the West. Four games with six games to go. Inside those those six remaining games, the Broncos have two against the Kansas City Chiefs and a home game against the Cleveland Browns.

In other words, if the Broncos beat the Chargers this Sunday, Broncos’ can call the printer and order playoff tickets.

A Chargers win , though, changes everything. In that scenario, the Broncos are 6-4 and the Chargers are 5-5. That’s just a one-game lead. And the head-to-head tiebreaker disappears.

A one game lead with six to go would mean the AFC West race is on.

Sundays game is one of the biggest NFL games in years

a Denver wins means the Broncos will win the AFC West....right?

Oakland cant get it together and KC will be mathematically eliminated Sunday

Basically they would have to Melt down and other teams win basically every game not to win it ,if beat Chargers this week Broncos for all intense and purposes have the division -- I havent done the exact math

Charges also play Pitt in week 14 , ben may be back by then as this is week 11

Charger Sched http://www.chargers.com/schedule/,

we ( broncos & chargers that is) both play baltimore but Broncos can also get tiebreaker back if they lose to Carolina or Bengals, or beat tampa bay , both play oakland again , too

Raiderrs schedule - http://www.raiders.c...n-schedule.html

Here is BRONCO schedule http://www.denverbro...s/schedule.html

STANDINGS & note Oakland already lost 2 division games, broncos none

Division games are always going to be closer. I expect Broncos to get the best shot of the Chargers but prevail in a narrow way, something like 27-17

as of right now Denver Hosts Colts in wildcard weekend, no matter who wins My heart will simultaneously be happy as it breaks

Put your mouse on the yellow for tie breaker explanation of team seeding

SD has Baltimore and Cincy yet to play?

Oh, yes..if they lose Sunday...its over......

..and Denver's chance to be the No. 2 seed (and get that week off) has a lot to do with two Baltimore-Pittsburgh games still to be played

If Denver gets a week off to prepare for the 2 AFC playoff games, I like their chances against anybody

The Chargers have a 3 game AFC North stretch after this Broncos game. Home to Ravens, then they go on the road to Steelers, then they are home to the Bengals. Brutal stretch, if you ask me, just based on the type of teams those are. Broncos had their AFC North folks spread out.

If the Chargers did not have 2 games won against the terrible Chiefs already, their record could be much worse.

Falcons - they played all 4 teams in the AFC West for the first 4 games and played Denver when their D was not nearly rolling like it is now. That is why, like Bogie, the Saints fan suggested; the Falcons record could definitely be inflated.

Chargers may have caught a break with Pit pending his health but it is weeks away

I believe it would help Denver greatly to have a reasonable certainty of being in the post-season early.......

they want and need to be the No. 1 or No. 2 seed to get that week off and mile high home game

..but if they go 3-up (really 4-up) on SD and Oakland...it would allow them to rest injured players for multiple weeks/

..and test backups....

It would also allow Peyton game time to work with backup receivers like Holliday

Its Super Bowl or bust with denver...they need all hands on deck

Yeah, I am just not sure if Big Ben would miss 3 games like they say he would. I am thinking 1 week for sure, maybe 2 weeks but I just do not see Big Ben missing both Ravens games in the next stretch of 3.

PIT can still win games without Roethlisberger. They have in the past, they will do so again. A good team is a good team.

Heres Tomlins update on Ben & other Pit injuries I just looked up

Ben is questionable 4 Sunday night's game against the Ravens.

the injury is, a sprained SC joint.

The SC joint is the sternoclavicular joint on the front of the shoulder, where the sternum and clavicle meet. A sprain there means Roethlisberger has suffered damage to the ligaments that hold the bones together. Tomlin said it's not an aggravation of a previous injury, which means it's not related to the partial rotator cueff tear Roethlisberger revealed he'd been dealing with in training camp.

Roethlisberger is undergoing further testing, and Tomlin said he'd pass along any further information as he gets it. For now, Byron Leftwich will get the start vs. AFC North-leading Baltimore. It would be his first start since 2009.

"I'll trust his assessment, if that's his assessment, but I'm not overly concerned about it as I sit here today," Tomlin said when told Leftwich said he felt rusty after completing seven of 14 passes Monday.

"We've got a lot of ball in front of us this week. If he's the guy, then he is the guy. And he'll get a great opportunity to prepare, and we'll expect him to play winning football."

Tomlin added of his banged-up roster, which also includes safety Troy Polamalu's calf issue, "We're not looking to make excuses

here is picture of joint, note its where collar bone connects to front of chest, not at the shoulder itself ( I am not sure how it affects throwing but other end of clavicle by shoulder will move and thus hurt here when he throws, and if tackled and lands on ball thats dangerous, or helmet to chest trying to tackle etc )

Much depends on the degree of injury of the ligament if just strained may be not torn or just a touch but was overstretched & injured that way

A freely moveable synovial joint links the upper extremity to the torso, with the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) participating in all movements of the upper extremity. The SCJ is a saddle-type joint that provides free movement of the clavicle in nearly all planes. The ability to thrust the arm and shoulder forward requires sound function of the SCJ. Because only about 50% of the medial end of the clavicle articulates with the manubrium, the SCJ has little inherent stability. Most of the SCJ's strength and stability originates from the joint capsule and supporting ligaments. The capsule surrounding the joint is weakest inferiorly, while it is reinforced on the superior, anterior, and posterior aspects by the various ligaments. These include the interclavicular, anterior and posterior sternoclavicular, and costoclavicular ligaments.

TREATMENT

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/828642-treatment

If truly just a sprain and a mild one

Sprains of the SCJ require only symptomatic treatment (ie, immobilization with a sling, ice for 24-48 h, analgesics, and anti-inflammatory medications). ( at least as per this site, not my field , can google yourself if courios )

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/828642-treatment#a1126

IF NOT MILD - depends on grade

Sternoclavicular joint sprains

Grade I sprains are treated with ice, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and a sling for one to two weeks.

In Grade II sprains, the sling is worn for three to six weeks.

Grade III sprains require a procedure called closed reduction. This is when the displaced collarbone is carefully slipped back into place after the person has received anesthesia or sedating medicines. Once the collarbone is back in its normal position, the injured shoulder is immobilized using a "clavicle strap" or figure-of-eight splint, along with a sling for four to six weeks. ( DOUBT HE HAS THIS UNLESS NOT BEING TOLD )

Thanks for the info. I had AC joint seperation two years ago skiing. Still not quite right. Reading about Ben's injury makes me think I also had SCJ spain. Do we know what grade he suffered yet? I hope it's mild and he can come back soon.

============================

Still called a sprain, no word on degre or if any dislocation is involved which I doubt or are hiding it

This is latest as of Noon or so on all of steeler issues

THERE IS A video< no time to watch

Tomlin said if Roethlisberger can’t go that Byron Leftwich, who finished out the Chiefs game, would be the starter. He also said it was too soon to talk about signing another quarterback

“We haven’t discussed it to this point,” said Tomlin. “I haven’t discussed much of anything to this point. More than anything, I’ve been in dark rooms readying ourselves for the Ravens. I’m sure that those discussions and others will potentially come up here in the next 24 hours or so.”

]Wide receiver Antonio Brown, who missed the Chiefs game with an ankle sprain, is also questionable for this week at this point.

Tackle Marcus Gilbert (ankle) started working again last week and is considered questionable, as are linebacker Stevenson Sylvester (hamstring) and running back Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles), who got significant work in practice last week.

Safety Ryan Clark is also on the questionable list after suffering a concussion against the Chiefs.

“He will be evaluated in terms of his participation,” said Tomlin. “I saw him and he appears to be fine. We’ll see where the evaluation process takes us during the course of the week.”

Safety Troy Polamalu is considered doubtful for Sunday.
