The Colts vs Patriots* Rivalry Gets Magnified If...

Recommended Posts

It doesn't really get magnified but it gets resurrected if Andrew plays lights out, win or lose. The media will be ecstatic over a Brady/Luck battle.

The real question is who has the better (or worse) defense.

I think if the colts D plays togather we have the better Defence.

If IFs and BUTs....you can complete the sentence. :)

When making predictions, you can count the number of "ifs" you need for each team to win. The team with the lesser number is your winner.

IF Davis and Mathis play... IF Butler can play another decent game...IF any of our LBs can hang with their TEs...IF we can get to Brady... Then I'm pretty sure we can beat them. IF anyone asks...

If Butler accounts for the reasons he was cut from the team and beats Brady with those previous reasons...because I feel like he's going to get picked on Sunday.

Patriots stomp us will=All the talking heads jumping off the bandwagon and claim they were right in the beginning

That's ok, I was hoping to get some leg room on the bandwagon anyway

...the Colts win (and the Nation pauses) or the Patriots* stomp us something ugly (thereby ticking off Colts fans even more).

The rivalry is over. It's not Brady-Colts or Brady-Luck, it's Brady-Manning, and NE played that game already this year. This is a good game between a division leader and a team that's right in the thick of a playoff hunt, but it's not a rivalry anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I like seeing the Colts be relevant again, and they're playing some truly inspired ball for their coach. You'd have to be a truly cold-hearted SOB to not like what Indy is doing for "Chuckstrong."

But this ain't what it used to be. Those days are gone.

Do Celtics fans still hate the Lakers? I could have sworn I've heard the "Beat LA" chant several times in recent memory. Rivalries exist in part because of the fan bases. I can tell you that Colts fans everywhere will still circle the Patriot game on their schedules for years to come because of what that rivalry meant to them and also the league.

If the Colts win the rivalry might be resurrected.

But it won't be sustained... Brady's only got a handful of years left, while Luck is just getting started. The rivalry was always about having the two best QBs in the game. It always had the "feel" of Russell-Chamberlain, Ali-Frazier, Bird-Magic... guys in their primes going up against each other. Know what I mean?

Yes, sure, but those two teams met in the finals twice in recent years.

I think the problem here is that Indy fans still dislike NE fans but NE fans are a little indifferent toward you guys now. I haven't had "hard feelings" about the Colts in a long time anyway, just a grudging respect, lol...

Sorry that GoPats position on rivalries so misses the point.

The depth of the disdain towards the Pats has Much More to do with our COLTS losing Big games to the Belichick Pats than to the Media HYPED QB`s dueling.

Personally, I will enjoy a Colts Win over the Pats more than Most Other wins, long after Brady & Beli are gone.

Your probably right but a Colts loss will stomp out the embers of what used to be a fire.

But we don't.

Believe me, Patriot fans care about Jets' games, and now Bronco games, along with Dolphin games, etc., well before they even care about Indy games.

There is no rivalry anymore. Pretty much dead.

you all do realize the patriots have the 29th ranked pass defense in the NFL right??? avg 285 yards given up a game??? Fitzpatrick for Buffalo who is just an avg QB in both games this year against new england has tallied 687 yards 6 TD's and 5 INT's against new england this year right???

Luck - 375 yards 3 TD's 1 INT

i actually predict this to be a high scoring game.

Bingo! My friend GoPats nailed it! By the time Luck is feeling comfortable and at ease in Pagano's schemes, playbook, and weapons overall Brady will be done and hanging up his cleats. Yes, it was primarily a Manning vs Brady rivalry. Right again.

Now, could Luck develop a rivalry with the next Pats QB heir in waiting Ryan Mallett as my other friend VL stated? Absolutely! This is why I like GOPats and VL. They have fresh eyes and see the Colts/Pats rivalry exactly right. Playing the Pats always has value though just on an intellectual challenge level alone IMO. The very definition of patience and precision in my book.

One last thing: Give us your best shot NE please no Pagano cancer sympathy here; I wanna see exactly where my Colts are talent wise, endurance wise, and execution wise.

No shortcuts NE. Run up the TD score if you want to. It's the defenses responsibility to stop you. I wanna see where we are at mentally and physically too. How tough are we right now? How far do we have to go to return to division title form? Playoffs form? and SB contender form?

How far is the road back for the Blue Horseshoe? Make us earn everything we get Foxboro. Thank you New England.

Well, that's kind of my point, actually. I have virtually no ill feelings toward Indy anymore. And I think, with a rivalry, that the vitriol needs to be mutual.

Overall I think rivalries start off that way... with a good degree of animosity that eventually evolves into a mutual respect. I'm kind of still hung up on the mutual respect phase when it comes to the Colts. I don't dislike your team and what's happened this season has only solidified my respect for the organization. It's been a long time since that 2006 AFCCG, and there have been more painful losses to endure since then!

If luck does not turn it over we have a very good chance on offense. Shut down the run game and TE's is what I'm looking for from our Defense.

Neither pass defense has anything to write home about. New England has allowed their collection of opponents to play on par with Brady and the Colts defense have allowed their collection of opponents to play at a higher level than Luck, from an efficiency point of view.

One other thing you guys have going for you is that the Patriots only have a half season's worth of game film on Luck.

The more I think about this game, the more I see the Colts pulling off an upset somehow. And I'm not trying to do some kind of crazy reverse-jinks thing here. I was actually talking to my buddy at lunch about it, and we both are thinking this one could reasonably go either way.

Yes, mutual hatred that evolves into respect because both teams are evenly matched. That is what a rivalry requires ultimately...2 evenly matched teams and the Colts are nowhere near that yet. Can we shock the world by beating the Patriots? Doubtful, but it is possible. Rivalries evolve through good to great consistency of QB play, pass rush ability, tackling prowess, and special teams execution over a sustained period of time. We just aren't there yet that's all. Yes, we will play a competitive game, but at the end of the day this is our buzz saw game. I use it as my benchmark game to see how far we have to go to return to prominence again.

Is the Colts/Pats game a rivalry right now? Nope, not even close IMO.

The other thing...In order to be a true rivalry of significance, both sides must be competing for an equal prize of merit like an AFC Championship Game. If we beat the Pats, are we going to the SB? Nope. Does beating NE next week knock them out of the Playoffs or derail their own SB aspirations? Nope. My point is both the odds and the prize you are fighting for must be even. They are not right now at this very moment.

This will be a great game and hopefully we pull it off but if we don't, I won't be shocked. BB and TB are smart veterans and they should be able to devise and execute a good enough game plan to beat a very solid rookie qb that is surrounded by a lot of young players with a very bad OL.

Now to expect Luck to have a 3 td game, has he thrown 3 in any game this year yet? I don't see it against a BB tactician. We will be better served if our running game has 150 yards than Luck having a 375 yard game IMO.

As for the rivalry, I have been disgusted and do not like the pats for the unsportsmanlike play BB preaches. The game where the Colts were driving in a hurry up style and the players kept faking injuries and laying down to get a rest, that was the thing that made me super dislike the pats. One play in particular where the lb went to the ground looking for a bailout at the goaline stand sealed it for my dislike. Plus Boston fans are mostly arrogant jerks, not all but was a large portion. I still dislike the pats.

Regardless of all the talk...the rivalry takes a break next season unless we finish identically with the Pats in our respective divisions..which isn't likely unless we somehow can win the South. It has been a great matchup over the years. 2003, 2004, 2005 when the Colts broke through and pasted the Pats, 2006 reg. season and AFCC, 2007 "Game of the Century" (man I wish we could have won that one, we had it in the bag! Plus that game cost us 7 starters and really derailed our season, IMO), and 2009 4th and 2...That was the last great one, though the comeback in 2010 was cool since we were playing with a JV, 4th string skill-group on offense.

I will look at the Pats vs Colts much like i did Knicks vs. Pacers. It's just not the same without Ewing and Reggie and all the others who were in it. The Colts will develop a new rival I am sure. That rival might very well be in Houston.

I clicked Like instead of quote...

This rivalry will NEVER be the same.... Manning is gone, Dungy is gone... Brady and BB will soon be gone.

Manning vs Brady was a decade long debate and war on the field... It was maybe the most popular NFL rivalry EVER.

It's over.

I was suprised that NE looked very pedestrian against a terrible Buffalo team. I feel we can score against this D, the question will it be more than Brady scores against our D. GO COLTS :coltshorse:

    •   This makes Chuck's pressers unbearable for me sometimes.    It's literally, uhm, every second, uhm, word that comes, uhm, out.
    • I think Al Woods is more important to us, and is more value, but the tandem (and Anderson to an extent) have been a major upgrade.  I keep forgetting Hankins is only 25 as well and so a good piece to build around.   Ballard said from day one that games are won in the trenches and he has made our defensive side a strong unit......now for the other side!
    • Ok. Defense first. Hankins. Love the signing. He’s playing really good, maybe outta position but he’s playing well and woooo !!! Al Woods was a find from heck !!!!! Like I say. We’re on our way. Smart signings like John Simon. Big signing/big name signings like Sheard and Hankins. Then I’ve like Hunt as a rotational DE honestly. He’s better than a Billy Will or even RJF even IMO. But we added some young, up and coming players who were just and are just hitting their stride and putting it all together. Ala Simon and Woods. We may have our NT and a key OLB if not started for the next 4 years. Just wish we keep on this offseason. Hooker should be back by week 4-5 next year anyways and he’s gonna come in with a vengeance. He’ll be a top 5 FS. Top 10 overall safety in the games he plays next year IMO. Then Wilson is showing promise when he plays and oh baby so is Hairston. That’s 2 of our top 4 next year at CB with Melvin and whoever we sign. Let Davis go btw !!!! Basham is NOT A BUST. Hes really raw. He may take til his 4th year to break out. But if we get a beast like Key, Landry, etc this offseason. It’ll give him another year to continue to work and develop. Look at Simon. Or even a highly touted kid like Nick Perry. It took 4-5 years for them. Happens all the time. Called ascending players. But with a truly dominant edge rusher to pair with Simon and Sheard. And 2 ILB’s with. Or at least one having top notch cover skills. Out front 7 is stacked and the secondary will work itself out with 1 signing of a top CB.    And honestly. I mean. We may only. On D !!! Be a top tier edge rusher and 2 good ILB’s away from a top 10 D. As crazy as it sounds. Like I said. Hooker, Wilson, Hairston in their 2nd years. Anderson in his 4th should be interesting. But yeah man. We bring in a superstar pass rusher in the top 5-10 of the draft (Key) A 12-16 sack monster. Then a really good ILB RD2. And as we all know you can find ALL PRO caliber ILB’s from RD’s 2-4. I mean you can find a handful of really good, Day 1 starting ILB’s. I’d like to see us have 1 rookie OLB starting and 2 rookie ILB’s next season. Hey ! Playing at a high level it don’t matter. Let em come in be Garrett, Beckwith, and Cunningham. That’d turn out D around NOW ! But. Let’s see. 2-4. Hicks, Kendricks, Wagner, David, then again. Cunningham and Beckwith this year !!!! but we can sign a ILB like Bowman maybe ? Or a younger cat whose still in the middle of his prime. They’ll be 4-5 good options. (Hadn’t looked at FA List yet lol)    Offense. We got Luck who’ll be FINALLY 100% next season. No holds barred. And he WILL be behind a stout OL. We’ll probably make a BIG splash in FA and bring in a G like Justin Pugh or whoever else. Maybe bring Mewhort back for a year to play RT ???? I mean we’ve screwed around enough. We need to sign the 2 best offensive linemen available no matter the cost. Or if we draft an ILB. Draft a G in RD 2-3. Bottom line is we can’t wait to have a good line when 12 is back next season. We got our man in Mack. Just need a complement to him. A bigger, more physical back. But Mack is our feature back of the future. Don’t mention the dropped passes. You all have seen what he can do in the run AND passing game. He’ll give 12 yet another weapon. Then Doyle, Swoope, whoever else ? Daniels ? Williams ? I’d say we draft a TE in the mid rounds. A faster, more athletic type to complement Doyle. But back to the point. IMO. IMO. Lol after we fix the OL with 2 studs, 2 stud ILB’s, and a brute Edge rusher (most important) we gotta bring in a big time WR like an Alshon Jeffery or Allen Robinson (1year) or both and let crief walk. We’d have Haeg, Good, a backup Center. RD6 ? Then either Clark or bring Mewhort back on a punk 1 year, get your butt out there and ball contract. Play him at RT baring a TRUE breakout by Haeg/Clark/Good.    Comes down to us having 90 mill or around 90 to spend. That’s 3 superstars and 3-5 solid backups, plus a bunch left probably. Idk. Just know a lot of money = Fun new toys !!!! Then couple that with the draft in which we’ll be having HIGH picks. Probably top 5-8ish in each RD. Basically 2 first RD picks with the high 2nd. Then Ballard has shown he can find talent like Mack and Hairston. SO FAR. Don’t know about Stewart yet. But yeah. Then add on top a handful of young players having a full or another full year under their belt. Anderson will probably be a superstar next year in year 4. Hooker will come back like a mad man. Melvin is a 4th year guy. Guess he’s one of those late bloomers I was talking about. Didn’t do crap first 3 years. Then sets the world on fire. Let’s kust hope he keeps it up. Cause he gives us a young 6’2 star CB. But Wilson and Hairston should be our 3-4 CB’s. If not 2-3. But IMO we can do all this.....This coming offseason. It’s simple and easy. We got money, high draft picks, and a franchise QB, plus some nice young up and coming players. But with 3-4 major FA signings, and hitting big on 3-4 draft picks. And I mean a ROY caliber player and a couple other day 1 star caliber starters. So. 1 Boss Edge rusher, 2 ILB’s with ( at least 1 with top notch coverage skills). 1 CB, 2 Offensive linemen, and a WR. That’s 7 big holes to fill. Big names like Jeffery or Robinson WILL hit the market. Justin Pugh may. Idk. Tru Johnson and Breeland are 2 CB’s but id have to read the list of FA’s. I’d like to see us grab Jeffery, Pugh, a stud, pro bowl type ILB,  and a top tier CB on free agency. 4 major signings. Then draft Arden Key, 2 boss ILB’s back to back, then RB, another Edge rusher, and a TE in RD’s 4-6. And Screw starting 3 rookie LB’s btw. Who cares ??? It’d be 100%. Perfectly fine as long as they ball. But we have losers like Jon Bostic who needs to be in Canada. And then Morrison should Be having to fight it out with Walker, George, Jackson, and maybe a cheap vet FA and an UDFA to see who wins the 2 backup ILB spots. Or 3. Need to sign a decent vet who comes from a winning team to be 1 backup. But yeah. Bottom line. Morrison should be on the bubble. Bottom line AGAIN. LAST TIME LOL. So. With the right signings, good draft, players developing.....We can compete for at least an AFC championship NEXT YEAR !!!!! Makes no sense as to why we wouldn’t be at least a 11-5 - 10-6 team next year. With just 7-8 holes to fill and the resources we have to do it. Let’s make it happen !!!!!
    • OK, so how many hits was Luck supposed to take as Grigson sat and watched? You don't get paid to guess. Anyone can guess. Put it another way, how is Luck doing now days?
    • #1 on your list has to happen first. I don't know if Irsay can do it.    But yes, I agree with you. We are taking our lumps but the end result will be better
