I keep reading this and went back to watch the game. They both were targeted about the same amount of time and gave up about the same number of receptions. Vaughn actually defended more passes ( 4-1), though Butler got the int. Most of the receptions were given up when they went prevent and were giving the receivers 10 yards of cushion. When the game was in doubt and they were playing up on the receiver, Vaughn allowed only 2 receptions. I don't know why folks are so down on him.

I agree. I don't think Vaughn is that bad.

Vaughn is always in the right place at the right time, he just never turns around to see the ball coming. It does annoy me when he celebrates waving his arms incomplete when he had nothing to do with the poor pass.

If he only gets to start 1 more game this season, I'm glad it will possibly be against his former team. Not only his former team, but a team he just left as recent as a couple months ago. He and Sergio Brown should have a pretty decent idea of what the Pats want to do offensively. Maybe that will help us some.

Butler! Dude had a great game last night, (defensive) player of the game for sure. I was at the game last night and afterwards he(Butler), Castonzo, and Bethea autographed my hat before getting on the bus! Great to see the "next man up" stepping up. Definitely a Darius Butler fan now.

Based on Arians comments in todays post game interview, I'd say Butler is going to remain a starter ahead of Powers. I wouldn't be surprised that all along that was their intention for bringing him here.

Yes.

Reporter: What does this mean for Butler?

Arians: It means he gets to be the starter. Wally Pipp - you forget about whoever's hurt.

In rewatching the game, I think I should give Butler a little more credit for the first interception. His anticipation and closing speed were elite. It was dangerous; the Jags had already tried a hitch-and-go on Vaughn earlier in the game, and they got him with one on the next drive that went to Cecil Shorts for a big gain (Zbikowski made it worse by missing the tackle). So Butler reading that, breaking on it, and completing the interception was a high-end play.

My original thought was that Gabbert telegraphed the pass, and he did. Not only did he make it clear that he was going to throw, his wind up and delivery were obnoxiously delayed. So Butler did get some help. But it was still a nice play, no doubt about it.

Fantastic game from him!!

2 picks, and shut down the guy he went against (he went against Blackmon for the most part, but went against Shorts too).

This kid is a keeper. Definitely better than Vaughn, who had another bad performance.

give the 2nd INT to Freeney. Ball tip drill. Butler is NOT consistent but can get there, still young. Let's see what he does vs. the Patriots. Brady will slice and dice ANYONE he sees with a weakness. Like Cattle coming to slaughter. If you want to stand out in this league, do something against New England, or better yet, don't let him (Brady) do something. How will we fare against premium talent (NE), time will tell. But go Butler (I like the sound of that from here in Indy :) )

it wasnt a terrible throw on the pick 6 by Butler in my opinion, Gabbert should have saw Butler but it still was a great read . Butler made a great play on the ball that Powers likely does not make in my opinion

Gav I agree great play by butler but I've seen a lot of pats games he is easy to catch with the double move which is why he out if pats an Carolina he gonna give up a td against the oats on a double move if he start

    • I don't think the defense is the same old. For starters, our defense is no longer undersized, and doesn't struggle against the run.   If the Colts draft a man coverage corner in the first round, it will signal a major departure from the previous way of doing things, and it probably means Gus Bradley is gone after this season. I'm not against any of that happening. I just don't expect it, based on the established pattern.   As for what Ballard said in his presser, he also acknowledged that the expected top three boundary corners were unavailable for most of the season. Brents was our highly drafted rookie, and only played 9 games; Flowers played four games; Rodgers was released. That left us with rookies and journeyman playing corner most of the season. With Brents in Year 2 and hopefully healthy, Flowers back and healthy, another year in for Jaylon Jones, that gives Bradley a lot more to work with in the secondary. And I think that's more what Ballard was implying with his comments. Otherwise, he probably would have signed a veteran corner already.
    • Are you going to tell me that I haven’t heaped tons of thanks on you?   How many times have I said thank you and that you are way too kind with your praise?  The answer is many.   I’m sorry you seem not to remember those moments.     Sorry about the headache.  The feeling was mutual.
    • That has always been my issue going back to the Polian years. They preferred undersized players to fit this scheme. That was great when they had a lead and played indoors. The problem  is that teams started running the ball to keep Peyton on the bench. Plus, u get in bad weather and on grass, their speed is negated and they are just a bunch of undersized players getting blown off the ball. I am in favor of building a team that can play in any environment and that can run various schemes. I see flexibility with the offence, however the D is the same old. That's why I think this is an important draft defensively. Will the Colts stray from their previous tendancies of drafting players that fit the Seattle scheme or will they deviate and say draft a man corner? Last year we were all on the edge of our seats when a trade was made at 3. Will we get our qb at 4? We were all on pins and needles till they made that pick. This draft has that same excitement for me. At 15 will Ballard and company do something different? This team needs a play maker on D and I contend that is their biggest need. I don't believe they get that player moving back.  Sure u may get him at 15 but if u really want a playmaker, this just might be the year to say move up and get a guy like Mirchell and Latu who may fall because of the medical. I am not in favor of getting a wr or te. Richardson, if he is the guy, should deliver explosive plays with our current roster.  Jot a fan of Gus and this scheme, but I really don't think he has a lot to work with and Ballard kind of eluded to that in his post season pressers.
    • The move happened before the 1984 season. To put in perspective how great Luck was here, here are the top 3 QBs over 40 seasons here win wise: Regular Season as a starter 1. Peyton Manning = 141 wins 2. Andrew Luck = 53 wins 3. Jim Harbaugh = 20 wins   Post Season as a starter 1. Peyton Manning = 9 wins (won the SB in 2006) 2. Andrew Luck = 4 wins 3. Jim Harbaugh = 2 wins   Luck had 33 more wins than Jim did and 2 more playoff wins than Jim did. Luck is so far ahead of any QB (not named Peyton) regarding wins in the Regular Season and Post Season that it is laughable.
