What Are You Listening To Right Now Part II: Mastermind INDYTrav

I posted some of her covers a while back, but her originals are the ones that I really love.  Unfortunately, she is starting to take down a lot of her older songs.  A lot of my favorites are already gone.  :(  I have always loved these two, though.

Orla Gartland - Let Me In

Orla Gartland - Devil On My Shoulder

I like her newer music, but it just doesn't have the same quirkiness as the older stuff.

Saw this band live Friday night and really enjoyed them.  I think I saw that they are going to be playing in Indy sometime in mid to late February, so I would highly recommend checking them out if you're an Indy local.  I would classify them as 4 parts '60s-style psych rock and 1 part country western.  There's enough country in it that you can feel the influence but not so much to turn me off to it, because I don't really care for country.

Yeah. That's Christopher Godin from the band Moglbl (yes, it's spelled that way)

I saw them live a few years ago at a NearFest.  He studied jazz primarily. He's a monster.

I had no idea until just now that Cyndi Lauper's version of this song is actually a cover.  I'm going to post the original and her cover so that we have three very different versions of this song all in one place.

Love that song!

It's probably in my top five..........although I would have to give that some thought before I committed to it.

I'm seeing this band live tonight.  Not my favorite song of theirs, but I can't post a link to my favorite because it would violate the forum rules.  The song is actually completely clean, but the picture that they used has the lead singer flipping off the camera...........because I guess that makes you edgy or something.

This is another one of my favorites from that time period.  Man, do I love a power horn line.

How was the show?  I watched the video you posted and the other song you were reffering to...I like their raw punk sound, kind of like early AFI meets Kittie! Hope it was good.

Heh heh.  There were three bands on the bill.  Two of them I had never seen before, so I didn't know what to expect.  So I walk in the door, and the band on stage is a group of older guys, like in their 50s, playing some bluesy rock and everybody in the bar was my age or older.  Not that I have a problem with that.  They were decent and I didn't mind watching them.  I just couldn't see them being on the same bill as the band that I came to see.  So I walk around some, and I find a doorway to a back room with another bar and somebody taking money and checking IDs.  The girl asks me if I'm here for the show and I tell her, "Honestly, I'm confused as to what's going on here."  And she tells me that there is going to be another show back here in the back room.  So all right, I am in the right place.  They didn't even have a stage back there.  They just set up some amps and speakers in the corner of the room.  Very makeshift.  It was good, though.  I enjoyed it.  The crowd in the back room was a lot younger than the crowd at the stage.  That is the problem that I find myself running into more and more lately.  When I go to see a band like this, they draw a young crowd because the band is young themselves.  I like the music and I enjoy the shows, but I feel kind of uncomfortable being in a room full of people that are almost all 10+ years younger than me.  I don't want to be the dirty old man in the room.

So this made me start thinking.  What are my top five?  I gave it some thought and came up with a list, and I ended up not including Vehicle on that list despite it being a great song.  Here is what I came up with.  There is never any question in my mind about the #1 spot.  It's not even a competition for me.  I don't even have to think about it.  It has been my favorite song since the first time that I heard it in the mid-'90s, and it is going to take something truly great to dethrone it.  I don't see it ever happening.  The rest of the list, I struggled with.  If you asked me to do this again in a couple months, I would probably come up with a different list.......or at least the order would be different.  So what are your top five, Colts forumites?

1.  Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

2.  Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do

Since there has been some discussion about music, I decided to gravedig this thread.  Today's excursion started with me listening to a lovely song called "I'll Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie.

Death Cab for Cutie - I'll Follow You Into the Dark

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDHY1D0tKRA

From there, I stumbled upon an equally lovely cover of that song by a young lady named Daniela Andrade.

Daniela Andrade - I'll Follow You Into the Dark (Death Cab for Cutie Cover)

That led me to listen to the EP that she released last summer.  I can't decide whether or not I like it.  I don't hate it, but at the same time it seems a little too subdued for me.  Some of the visuals are beautiful, though.  They really went all out while shooting the videos.

Daniela Andrade - Sound

Daniela Andrade - Come Around

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-fL4KJh_XQ

Daniela Andrade - Shore

One thing that I definitely don't like about it are the breaks where they stop the music and talk.  They really interrupt the flow of the music.  It's like they were trying to make a mini-movie, and it just doesn't work for me.  Also, I think the music is somewhat overproduced.  She has a lovely voice, and somehow that doesn't come through in these tracks.  For example, here is an acoustic version of the last song that I enjoy quite a bit.  I think these songs work better when they're just an acoustic guitar and her voice.

This post is going to bounce.  (From song to song, and also as a metaphorical rhythm for your life)

You're welcome.

"It Was A Good Day" -  Ice Cube  >

"Worst Comes To Worst" - Dilated Peoples  >

"One Time" - Marian Hill  >

"Careless Whisper" - George Michael  >

"R.O.C.K. in the USA" - John Mellencamp  >

"Don't Let Me Down" (Da Bomb & Electric Bodega Remix) - The Chainsmokers  >

"Right Here Waiting" - Richard Marx  >

"Can You Feel The Love Tonight" - Elton John >

"Blow" - Kesha.

Now you're one of us.  You're coming with me.

Not everyone will bounce to this setlist, but that's OK.  That's just what I've listened to in the recent "right now".

I lost a couple of my favorites this past week.  Two of the New Jersey bands that I make a point to see whenever they play close to where I live are calling it quits.  One is Fortune Yeller, who I have discussed above.  I really liked their music, but they just never seemed to catch on in the local scene.  Unfortunately, that means that there are several good songs that I only got to see live that will never get recorded now.  But hey, that's what happens when you listen to local bands.  A lot of the time, they never pan out.  I got to see them live again in mid-June, this time on an actual stage.  What I didn't know at the time was that it was their last show.  I found that out this past week while talking to somebody at another show.

The other band that I lost is Dollys.  I hate to see them go because they were one of the bands that got me interested in local music in the first place, but at the same time the writing has been on the wall for a while now.  They had pretty good chemistry when they were at their peak.......to the point that one of the songs that I included in my top five is a Dollys song.  I really love Cornerstones.  I found out about this one by chance as well.  I went out to a show Friday night and just happened to be wearing a Dollys shirt.  I was a little hungry, so I stopped at the Korean taco place on the boardwalk to get a taco.  After I placed my order, the guy behind the counter says, "So how did you take the break-up news?"  I must have given him a what-the-heck-are-you-talking-about look, because then he goes, "Your shirt.  Dollys.  They announced on facebook yesterday that they are splitting up."  I had no idea.

So I'll leave you with a Dollys song.  This is probably one of their least popular songs, and they never play it live because it just doesn't work in a loud bar setting, but I like it.

Dollys - Drive On

    • Yeah, the slow starts are dreadful. Just makes you wonder what in blue skies are we doing in practice?    Can't rely on Andrew to bring us back every game. Chud is also to blame. He's gotta get better and more creative at play calling    I like Green Bay's play calling how they move everyone around. Dorsett should be our Randall Cobb. Put him in the backfield, in motion for jet sweeps. The kid has speed, use him everywhere until we actually trade him if they still are trying to trade him
    •   She pushed him and then slapped him across the face.   Maybe you could argue somewhat from a moralistic prospective that his response was excessive.   But again, in this country people don't tend to see it that way if it's a guy vs. a guy even if there is a massive size difference.  If a guy starts something, people will usually cheer if he gets pounded for it.  So arguing that isn't in keeping with how we usually view these things.   Thing is that ultimately she hit him first, he struck back ending her violent attack.  That doesn't make him a monster.  At worst that makes him human.  Quite frankly if you ask me he's a person who was defending himself and his dignity.  Slapping another person across the face is not just a physical attack it's an insult on their dignity.
    • I buy his change in attitude, it's refreshing.

But my problems, or I guess my questions, with Pagano are more just about his actual coaching ability. He can change his ways all he wants but we'll see if he's actually able to coach this team up.
    • Part of it is the negative side of a zone blocking scheme.  With zone blocking the line is supposed to flow to the play side so that means a lot of times on even fronts there is a guy unblocked (I don't remember if the D was in an even front or an odd front on this play).  On the play mentioned by the OP (I think it was Turbin on the delay not Mack) without knowing the specifics, that could just as easily be on the QB and not the scheme.  The QB needs to be able to see uncovered defenders, he should have sent the TE in motion to that side.  If there is a defender not covered by the zone, you usually want him near the POA so that player gets caught up in the cluster as the oline flows to the play side.  That is why I think this is on the QB, he has got to know the blocking scheme well enough to identify the player that is not going to get caught up in (we call it the wave but that's because it's easier for 7th graders to understand a wave rather than a moving zone) the wave and adjust the formation accordingly.   It could also be the scheme which, if that's the case, then Philbin needs to be fired immediately.  You cannot develop a blocking scheme that leaves a defender on the LOS unblocked on a delay or misdirection type play, players in the NFL are too fast for that.
    • I'm buying that he is noticeably different in what he says. You can tell in his press conferences that he is vocally expecting more out of players than in previous seasons (atleast publicly). Time will tell if this mantra produces any changes.
