I'm 25.. Been a Colts fan since 95' my first real fond memory were the years of The Comeback Kid Jim Harbaugh,Marshal Faulk and the hail mary drop in the end zone in the AFC Championship against the Steelers.

I'm excited for the future. Absolutely love Andrew Luck and all the new faces and talent that are coming into the league and joining the blue and white.

But it's e faces of old, they are the ones I'm always going to remember.. I grew up on them, so how could I not?

I'm just going to just give our a personal thank you for a few of my favorite Colts players in the past in no particular order.

Even if things are not always so good.

 

Me and a couple other fossils here on the Forum can recall some great names like Art Donovan, Jim Parker and Lenny Moore, and other lesser known guys that played in the Unitas era. And then there were those couple long stretches since then having a top 5 draft pick almost every year...and striking out with several of them.

 

But it was well worth hanging with the Colts thru all those years of really bad football and a franchise that lost its direction for a while, to come out of it with Peyton Manning and the group you guys grew up with....and now Andrew Luck.

 

The Colts have cemented themselves as a great NFL franchise and are adding another exciting chapter with these new guys.

 

So enjoy the Andrew Luck era and whatever follows....hang with them if things get tough for a few years, because its very satisfying when they come back on top.

I'll be 27 this year, but the earliest memories I have are from around 93-94. 1995 was when I really started getting into football. I remember I was so mad as a kid when we lost in the AFC Championship game.

I agree. I wish I was able to see guys like Unitas,Moore,Mackey and Berry play. But I'm lucky to have been around for the Manning era. And now The Luck. And seeing our boys win a Superbowl was one of the best feelings I have ever witnessed. I cried in joy, but I'm sure all of you have as well.

I guess we have heard from as reggie would say , "the old heads" and the thread was started by using the reggie lingo forward "the new heads" which I guess makes me one of the few "in between heads" in the time of BC (Before Colts) I was a Steeler fan, my first real year of football was the year the Steelers drafted Terry Bradshaw, I was a steeler fan.....I was a steeler fan after the Colts arrived here.....I was a Steeler fan at the start of the AFC Championship game in 95.......as that game wore on, I was admiring the fight in the dog that the Colts had.....the fact that they almost beat my Steelers......and I decided as the clock ticked to zero of that game that it was time I embraced the team that moved to my home state.....I have never looked back.

I slowly transitioned to become a Colts fan through watching the misadventures of the likes of Jack Trudeau, Chris Chandler, Jeff George, Eric Dickerson, Rosey Potts, Billy Brooks, Pat Beach, Clarence Verdin, Kevin Call, Mike Prior, Eugene Daniel, Duane Bickett, Jeff Herrod, the Goose, Dean Biasucci, and Ron Stark.

Somehow, for me, those were the golden years, in part because there were no expectations. Anything resembling success was like a gift. If the team even sniffed the playoffs, it was bliss.

Don't get me wrong, I loved what Peyton brought to our town, but the high expectations can get heavy sometimes.

Although I have been a lifetime resident of Indiana I had been a secondary Colts fan until 1995(Was KC fan until the arrival of Ken Dilger)

I don't thing age necessarily has to determine your favorite players.   I never got to see John Unitas play, but when I was in 2nd grade I read a book called "Johnny Unitas Ad The Long Pass".  That is what got me to be a Colt fan.  So the first time I watched the Colts, Bert Jones was the QB.  I love Jones to Roger Carr.  Or Glenn Doughty.  The Sack Pack of Fred Cook, Joe Ehrmann, Mike Barnes, and John Dutton.   Bert Jones was an amazing QB.   I also loved Curtis Dickey, Randy McMillian (The Big Mac Attack), Raymond Butler, Duane Bickett, Jon Hand, Jeff George (Yeah, I was excited they got him), Chris Hinton, Jim Harbaugh, Lamont Warren.  Thats to name a few before the Manning era.

 

I would encourage any younger fans to go to youtube and search for the Colts.  Watch Unitas and Jones play.  They were amazing.

I watched "The Greatest Game Ever Played" on my living room floor when I was 9 going on 10. I was raised in a Chicago suburb but a fanatical Colts fan. My dad took pictures of me going nuts in that game and sadly they are all lost. Mamy of you may not know but the Colts and Bears used to be in the same conference. I believe it was the NFC Central, too long to recall. When the Colts went to the AFC I thought it sucked but that was long ago. I believe the Browns and someone else switched that same year.

      My biggest heartache as a Colt fan was the catastrophe of losing to the Jets in SB3. I simply never even thought it had a chance ot turning out like it did. It's funny that Don Shula known for the perfect season with the Dolphins is not equally recognised for the head coach that lost to the AFC and in those days it was a huge event and got him fiired as the Colts owner never forgave him for losing. Don't forget the AFC was considered then as a joke  primarily because it was.

I will add Lydell Mitchell to our list.  He had his best years with the Baltimore Colts.  
 
I also like to bring up Joe Washington.  While he was only with the Colts from 1978-1980, he epitomized the term All Purpose Yards. He was really one of the first guys that I remembered as a true specialist in terms of punts and kick returns.  I always refer to his big game in a rainstorm on MNF.....I thought I remembered against the Jets.   I was WRONG...it was the Patriots.  Here is an excerpt of his game from Wiki:
 
His most memorable performance was on September 18, 1978 in Baltimore's 34–27 victory over the New England Patriots onMonday Night Football, when he had a hand in three of the four touchdowns scored by the Colts in a fourth quarter in which both teams combined for 41 points. Yep Ol' #32 was one mean hombre. If you have not seen the video of Mike Curtis cracking some goofy fan that ran out on the field google it for laughs. Curtis did not create his outlook on life soley on the field as he is pretty scary as well in his everyday life. He is a vey uccessful business person by the way.

Mike Vanderjagt anybody???? As a younger Colts fan (19) I didn't have the pleasure of seeing those "old heads" but I have been blessed to grow up in the Peyton Manning era and after only a single down season the Andrew Luck era, these "new heads" should ensure many more years of Colts prosperity.  Loved the way Bob Sanders played the game but I wish he could have stayed healthy (FA pick-up?) he has been my favorite Colts player.  Going to love watching T.Y. Hilton develop into a game changer!

My Dad's boss(Principal at PCHS) had a son who worked as an intern with the Colts and as a 4th Grader I received a package from the Colts that included a 1987 Team Photo, several player Cards, an autographed photo of Eric Dickerson and a set of game worn ED arm bands.

Joe Washington's performance against the Patriots you brought up was the single greatest performance I have ever seen by one player in one game.

It was the heaviest rain I can ever remember in a game.....poured the entire game.....the mud of Memorial Stadium.....loved it.

I wonder what percentage of Baltimore Colts fans transferred their allegiance to Indianapolis when the Colts relocated ? To most people from my generation in Baltimore, we had two franchises, the Baltimore Colts, then a twelve year gap, and now the Baltimore Ravens. We still celebrate our four Championships with the Baltimore Colts, and our 2000 Championship with the Ravens. Hopefully, we'll add another Championship this Sunday. The post 1984 Indianapolis Colts are just another franchise, albeit with familar colors and helmets.

 

As an Orioles fan, I don't count the St.Louis Brown's years, although, like the Colts, it's technically part of the franchise. It just seems convoluted to me to compare the Baltimore and Indy players in one conversation. It seems the NFL, Pro Football Hall of Fame, and other media types, have tried to whitewash history and pretend the Colts never played in Baltimore. It just seems odd mentioning Memorial Stadium and Johnny Unitas on an Indianapolis forum. I guess when you think of Unitas, you think of Baltimore, and when you think of Jackie Robinson, you think of Brooklyn, and not LA. I guess I never understood the mindset of the Baltimore Colts fan from Baltimore, who went with Indy, and not the Ravens, when pro football returned to Baltimore.

95 will ALWAYS be my favorite year as a Colt fan.   It was the first time Indy and it's fan base got a taste of "IT"....

Colts were a pretty gritty team in the mid-late 80's, especially when Dickerson came aboard.  Big fan of Duane Bickett from those days.  Still to this day shocked at how the Colts throttled Elway and the Broncos back in 1988(?) on MNF.  But, those teams were flawed and basically as good as their 9-7 type records reflected during that era.

I don't remember watching Art Donovan or Big Daddy Liscomb. I was 10 years old when I started following the Colts in 1960. But was hard to watch many games living in Syracuse NY. We would get the Giants and Cleveland back then. So I would see an occasional game and they had a few shows that would show a bunch of highlights. They also woud have a "game of the week" which was extened highlights of a game. Both Donovan and Liscomb played their last year in 1960 for the Colts . Liscomb played 2 years for Pitt and made All Pro his last year in the league. Liscomb and Jim Parker were physical "freaks" , just bigger than the rest of the guys. All the palyers I have above were incredible players.

 

Here's something on Liscomb...

 

 

 

Lipscomb didn't attend college and was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Rams. But, not before serving time in the Marines. He spent his service at Camp Pendleton. Then, he played for the Rams for three seasons from 1953-1955. He then played for theBaltimore Colts for five seasons. In two of the seasons he played for the Colts, 1958 and 1959, he earned a spot in the Pro Bowl. He then went on to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers for two seasons. During his '59-'60 & '60-'61 off-seasons, Lipscomb worked as a professional wrestler.

Lol I remember clear back to the Unitas days and there have been some good post in this thread making some comments about great players,hall of famers.I was a fan of them all  I became an avid Colts fan ,not that i wasnt before,when i found out this storied franchise was moving to Indy,I was on cloud nine.Great thing is weve got something special brewing right now,mark my words this team will write theyre name in the history books very very soon      :dancing:
