Tom Telesco Interviewing With The Chargers

Interesting move. I'm watching these coaching moves with bated breath; it makes me root for the Colts to go as far as possible in the playoffs (even more of course!) just to keep BA busy enough for the name pool to dwindle, forcing San Diego's hand as far as grabbing somebody before they are all gone.  Of course I say that I pull for the Colts to go even farther than the pundits have us going; I want us to win the Super Bowl!

Apparently no one in the NFL listens to the media other wise they would not want our coaches and perrsonal because according to them we suck... sometimes i wish the people in the nfl listened to the media...

I think it's a big deal if he gets the job and picks additional Colts coaches/staffers to fill the SD offices now vacant.  Continuity would be nice on this young team, even on the management side.  It would be interesting to know how well he and Arians get along, what he thinks of BA.  I also wish I knew more about what a VP of Football Operations actually does - is he the capologist?  Manages scouts?  The impact could be substantial if Grigson delegates contract negotiations, or cap managing to him.  If it is more scouting related, I'm confident Girgson will survive the loss of Telesco.

I think it is a big move.  The Chargers will win if they get him.  He is the one holdover from the Polian era because the man knows talent..  Tom Telesco would be a big loss to us, but I am sure Ryan Grigson has a 'young'in he knows who can step in.  Good luck Tom Telesco...I for one will hate to see you leave the horseshoe!!!!   :colts:  :colts:  :colts:

As I remember it, Telesco almost got our GM position last year, but Grigson beat him out. I believe it would be a real loss to our front office.

I don't remember what team, but someone inquired about him last year as well. I hadn't really thought about him leaving, but it makes perfect sense. And I would imagine he would want to talk to Arians.

Believe it was the Bears last year. TT would be a lose to the FA but he does deserve a shot.

Rams as well. I don't know that he actually did interview with either team, but they both requested and received permission.

Two names that I would have on my list if I were hiring a GM would be Marc Ross of the Giants and Eric DeCosta of the Ravens. DeCosta took his name out of consideration last offseason, apparently because he's next in line once Newsome retires, but I'd at least try this year. And Ross was a finalist for a couple different teams, including us. I think he's a strong candidate. Telesco belongs up there as well. Young, has worked with some smart and successful people, comes from a stable organization, good with the cap... What's not to like?

Totally agree...DeCosta seems locked into Baltimore. Get the feeling Ross would leave for the right job. I'll be interested to see what Telesco does this offseason. I think he will get multiple looks. BA and Telesco going to the same spot (San Diego) seems plausible. If that happens or they go different places, it would make Irsay look really good but I am hoping it doesn't.

Agreed all around.

My question is, what do we do if Telesco does leave? I'm not all that familiar with anyone beneath him on the staff, so I'm not sure whether we'd promote from within or hire someone to be Grigson's right hand man. I'm sure we put contingencies in place for something like this; like we said, Telesco was in consideration around the league last year after we were 2-14, so it's not surprising that he's getting attention after a nine game improvement.

I'm not sure. Im pretty sure TT concentrates on the pro side, including contracts and cap. I also don't really know the balance of Polian holdovers to Grigson additions under Telesco and Grigson. Based on Grigson's statement last year when they announced Telsco's promotion, I got the feeling Irsay made the call. Grigs had no experience with the salary cap management side of the FO at that time. I always wondered how Telesco felt about working under Grigson...on paper Telesco was arguably more "qualified" than Grigson last year but from the draft to in-season roster management them as a combo sure exceeded my expectations.

I think Telesco is the guy that helped with much of the contracts and cap situations. I read somewhere last yr. that he was a cap guru. Could be a big loss if he was helping Grigs with all the contract stuff.

He's pretty much the number two guy under Grigson.  He's going to get a GM job in all likely hood sooner or later.  He interviewed for a couple last year including ours.  The key is that hopefully the Colts have been preparing the next guy under him.

Irsay should ante up and pay Telesco and Arians to stay.....make it worth their while.....this team is going to the Super Bowl soon.....I know I am showing some serious optimism!!.   :pass:  :lombardi:  :lombardi:

If not as I said earlier I am sure Grigs has someone in mind....maybe young like himself he sees as a cant miss talent....guru....????

Great point.  Since Telesco was in consideration last year, that had to tell them it was only a matter of time before he got his chance as a GM with another team so I'm sure they started making considerations for what they'll do when that ultimately happens.

Telesco is a Polian holdover and was kept last year for continuity's sake and to manage the cap. I'm sure he has no warm fuzzies for Grigs, since he was picked over him. He certainly must not specialize in player evaluations, because our big jump forward in talent happened when Grigs arrived. So most likely he's primarily a numbers cruncher, a cap guy. And that's who the Chargers are considering for GM? I don't buy it. If you want to be successful, your GM must be able to evaluate talent (like Grigs, who comes from a scouting background). Either the Chargers are really stupid, or they are really smart and using TT as a back door to get to BA, as GoColts8818 was surmising.

Sure, if Telesco leaves, we will need another cap guy. But now that a year has passed and Grigs has seen how the money side works, I'm sure that TT can be replaced.

Telesco began as a scout and eventual Player Personnel manager. He knows talent. And he wasn't held over, he was promoted.

Just found this from last year: Telesco did NOT interview with the Rams, removing his name from consideration before he actually met with them.

He was also linked to the Bears job last year, but I don't think they ever interviewed him. We promoted him shortly after he withdrew from the Rams opening.
