2013 FA acquisitions

OT William Beatty Giants

He's a quality lineman that could fill the hole at RT. Let Winston Justice walk!

OLB Connor Barwin Texans

The emergence of Watt and drafting of Mercilus makes Barwin expendable. He'd be a fantastic fit for the Colts new 3/4 scheme.

CB Cary Williams Ravens

Colts need a quality #2 CB to play opposite of Davis. Williams has ties to Pagano and would be the perfect choice.

You do know he's a pretty good RT, right? We don't need help at tackle, both Castonzo and Justice have played really well. Our guard situation is another story though.

Didn't Barwin have a good year the year before? Remember its not all about stats. A Barwin signing would do wonders for Colts.

i watched him a bit on all 22 tape...not real impressive. not that my opinion carries much weight. that guy has played four years and only had one good season.

I like all three of your FA ideas....

However,  here's my one concern with Beatty...     He's currently a left tackle.   He's not going to want to come to the Colts as a Right Tackle.   The only way we'd be able to get him to play the right side is to pay him as if he's our Left Tackle.

And,  if we decide he's already better than Castonzo,  and we want him as our Left Tackle,  and we move AC to the right sdie, then Castonzo will want to leave when his deal is up in a few years.   Unless, we pay him the Left Tackle rate.

Some of these signings can be very, very tricky....

I'm curious as to why people want Barwin so much. He has not played well this year, only 3 sacks. Spencer on the other hand had a monster year with 11 sacks and 95 tackles. Spencer will certainly require a much larger contract though.

Anthony Spencer or Paul Kruger would fill out the OLB spot nicely.

They are the only edge rushers I'd like to go to FA for.

I know we have a ton of cap space, but it'll go very quickly if we start overpaying for the premium guys.  And let's face it, most of those guys stick with the team and system that they're in.  The FA moves I'd like to see are:

1) Gosder Cherilus, RT, Detroit.  Yeah, Justice gave us a great return on the very small investment we made in him.  However, he was hurt half the year, resulting in Linkenbach starting.  That can't happen!  Plus, he was only "adequate" when he did play.  I'd get Cherilus as a Plan A, re-sign Justice to be Plan B, and Link can be Plan C (if he returns).

2) Mike Jenkins, CB, Dallas.  We need another legit starter.  I think Butler, Vaughn, and Gordy are all FAs, so bringing them back is not guaranteed.  Butler may have done enough to have some team sign him away, but I expect Vaughn back at least.

3) Antoine Caldwell, RG, Houston.  This is a value move to shore up the interior of the line.  I'd rather have Luis Velasquez of SD,  Brandon Moore of NYJ, or Ramon Foster of Pittsburgh, but many of those successful guards would just as soon stay put.  Caldwell lost his starting job after 6 weeks, and they have Brandon Brooks waiting in the wings too.  So Houston won't try too hard to keep him and Caldwell should be happy to jump to a team where he can start.

Indy's FAs that we should try to keep: Avery, Justice, Moala, Antonio Johnson, Vaughn, Butler. Ricardo Mathews, Linkenbach.  I think all those guys are UFAs...

I like all except Caldwell and Cherilus, I dont think they haave the strength or technique to start at RG (23 reps at the Combine, Cherilus same thing 24 reps at Combine) to me that makes me think they arent much into working out and getting stronger and better, I could be wrong but it does not sound like neither were or maybe even are now what would be called workout warriors

Priority 1 - BUILDING/INCREASING TEAM CHEMISTRY

#1 - We don't need Mike Wallace!!! (Remember, C.Pagano's words "Let's build a monster"...why would we pay M.Wallace to potientially come in and rip the locker room apart. Mike wants money!!! Forget that! If speed is what you want, let's get N.Palmer in the rotation, and trade or work a deal to bring Chris Owusu, A.Luck's college deep threat, here, and that will keep things in the right perspective.) - ...Shhhhh, i don't wanna hear it...I know already,....but concussions & knee injuries are both serious, and with all the comeback stories that happened in 2012, taking a chance on Owusu is much cheaper than paying 45 to 60 million for a diva. Girls are expensive....LOL

#2 - We need experience on the O-Line. (If we're going to acquire free agents,  the offensive line is where we need to spend the money, after we draft a couple of RB's)

#3 - Defense (I think we're 2 defensive linemen, a saftey, and a one shutdown corner away from being an elite defense. Stop drafting LB's. We have enough already)

With another successful draft, and signing key free agents to patch up the oline, we'll be back to our winning ways of being a contender every year.

Free Agent List Re-Submitted:

Louis Vasquez

Andy Levitre

Sam Sheilds

i agree in theory, but castonzo still has a lot to prove imo if he ever wants left tackle money

You don't think our backfield is deep enough?  Are you not sold on Ballard?  Brown will come back cheap due to being injured and out of a job on the FA market and by the time next season rolls around Ballard will be the starter with Brown as the change of pace back, plus we still have Carter and another back that eludes my mind right now, plus Karim is listed as a back as well.

I do agree that the oline definately needs to be tweaked, but we have a large chunk of money to play with so it could get interesting.

The caldwell move wouldnt work, he plays in a zone blocking scheme if im correct and as Gavin said earlier, Cherilus is not strong enough, and we dont want to see him get linkenbacked

I wonder how close we got to picking up Mike Jenkins last offseason. If memory serves, we were pretty dang close and Dallas was asking too much.  With the arrival of Morris Claiborne, they may not be asking as much this time around.

Definitely excited to see the work Grigs can do with a big stash of cash.

Btw, when does the FA signing period start?

(V.Ballard_?).....No sir. I attribute ballards' success to his intelligence, as he was the best of all the colts' RB's, at figuring out how our offense works. I see him as another Joseph Addai. With timing and knowing the offense, an average back can look like a playmaker for any team. If the opposing teams defensive backs, are successfully making open field tackles on our RB's, we don't have any playmakers at that position. 175lb DB's, shouldn't be able to just bring our backs down in a matter of seconds. We need backs that are gonna make them think twice and question whether or not they're gonna be able to tackle a guy.....like these 2 youngsters are capable of, should Grigson decide to draft either of them......

                      EDDIE LACY                                                                                     LE'VEON BELL

Ed Lacy is what we need, but i think Grigson would choose Le'Veon Bell.

I agree that Lacy is a stud at the rb position, its still not a priority, not when we just drafted last year, I believe Ballard/Brown/Carter (when healthy) will be enough of a stable that we wouldn't need to go rb in the draft.  That would be a luxury pick and when we have more glaring holes on the lines and CB our 1 and 3 picks should be Defense and Offensive line with the first two picks.  Do you really think either would fall to us?

"Do you really think either would fall to us?" - There are no RB's that have even cracked the 1st round of the draft yet. Currently, sitting at the bottom of the pile, is USC's QB Matt Barkley. Barkley will be snatched up by someone, only to have some of the higher draft picks be pushed down to us, but we will not be able to choose any of the top Olineman in this years draft. Eddie Lacy will be the low hanging fruit, sitting there at the 24TH pick, waiting on us to gently pluck him off of the vine. All of this talk about fixing the Oline will be done in free agency. If Win NOW is the mentality, then forget training these rookies, the free agent market on Offensive lineman is so plentiful right now, Cleveland could make the playoffs with the quality of talent available. CB? Sam Sheilds, Draft Raymond (Ray-Ray) Armstrong (Miami/Fulcher) done....

Brown will be the starter next season if healthy and there are a few reasons why in my opinion

1.Ballard may be the more powerful Back (Which I think is very debatable at this point) but he also shows a knack for fumbling the ball

2.Brown is a breakaway quick scoring threat

3.Brown is the better blocker in the passing game

What I can say about Ballard though is he does have the patience that Brown lacks sometimes in my opinion, I dont think there is any chance we go for a running back in the draft

Brown may be the worst RB I have seen this season. He hits a hole if you open it, but poor vision for cutting to openings.

A terrible blocker before this season. He did show improvement. But I saw him several times not pick up the right man, letting other rushers come thru. Pray we get a dynamic 2nd runner. JMO

Connor Barwin is mediocre. Develope someone younger and faster.

Castonzo gave up a Horrid eleven sacks. He has little upside physically. He could be a solid RT and improve our run game.

We couldn`t run to the right all season, Justice can`t do the job.

If we could get Le'Veon Bell in the late 3rd or 4th I would love having him here! Delone Carter needs to get gone.

I completely agree that we should target Beatty. We also have to get at least one starter at G in FA. Shouldn't be too difficult because there are a bunch of quality UFA guards and a few will inevitably hit the market.

I think Barwin would be a good fit, but I like Spencer from the Cowboys more.

I don't want Williams for our #2... he's not that good(IMO), but he thinks he's a #1 corner. He just said a couple days ago that he thinks he is worth 10 mil. a year in FA (which I think is ridiculous)  I can think of 10 corners I'd rather get in FA this offseason off the top of my head, but I think we should target Chris Houston (Det.) or Greg Toler (Ari.) neither are as tall as Williams, but I don't think that they will start negotiations at 10 mil. per....( he will never come close to getting that from anybody).

Based on what? opinion? last I checked we are all entitled to one, I base mine on solid facts

1.Fact 1-Ballard was only averaging .1 more ypc in his 12 starts then Brown was in his 4 starts

2.They both averaged the same ypc for the season (3.9)

3.Brown got injured which means Ballard got the majority of carries from then on out which meant more yards

4.Brown is the better of the two at pass blocking

5.Brown is a quick scoring game changing threat

6.Brown takes better care of the ball

Hey I like the 1 2 punch of Ballard and Brown but Brown should be the starter for now unless he does not come back 100 percent and Ballard improves on his pass blocking,

One thing Brown has to work on is building some more muscle I think he does go down easy at times

Just like you used solid statistical facts to show Matt Shaub played a good game Sunday? IMO, the eye test clearly show s Ballard is the better back. He may not have the speed of brown, but he picks up tougher yards more consistent yards.

I like brown, but the guy can't stay healthy
