47 Million in Cap Space.

Recommended Posts

I'd expect 20 million or so will go to resigning some players

1.Moala(DEPTH while draft 3/4 DE to compete with him)

2.Avery((competition for #2 wr)

3.Darius Butler(Nickel competition while signing Tracey Porter)

4Josh Gordy(Nickel competition)

5Moise Fokou(ILB Depth)

6Antonio Johnson(NT Depth with Chapman starting, also consider draft a NT in the middle to late rounds such as 5-6)

7.Mcafee(Need a Punter)

8.Matt Overton(need long snapper)

9.Winston Justice (RT Depth)Signing William Beatty or Ricky Wagner

10.Linkenbach(Guard depth, drafting Warmack or Barrett Jones or Travis Frederic or Alvin Bailey)

11.A.Q. Shipley(compete for starting Center job)

12.Drew Stanton(Backup to Luck)

13?.MAYBE Freeney to a reasonable deal to reflect his production (Draft OLB Brandon Jenkins in 3rd round)

Linkenbach and Justice need to go..perhaps Gordy as well. I like Avery for depth, but he's not a #2

Linkenbach has been our best Guard (which is not saying alot) and depth is need at RT. Avery has played better as a number two then Hilton in yards and catches but our WR's are moved around quite a bit so I dont think that matters so much as whos 1 2 or 3

I agree with everything Gavin said except Freeney, I don't see any way he's back. Avery and Butler have shown enough to have a place on this team. Justice clearly isn't the long term answer at RT but we can't fix everything on the line in one off-season. Link is just a nice cog to have to be able to fill in if needed. Antonio Johnson is a big question mark. McKinney is still on the books and Chapman is in the plans as well.

Sorry, I don't agree with any of this.

Link has been playing well when he played as a guard. Also, he provides depth at the tackle spot. Justice has been our best pass blocker, and has been one of the better pass blocking RTs in the NFL this year (statistically and just by watching him).

Donnie Avery has to stay, especially after this season, where's he's going to end up about 150 yards short of 1000. Considering the value the Colts have gotten out of him this year, he's a must keep.

We need to keep this guys. They're not like Fokou, for example, who we can easily afford to let go.

As for Freeney....   I'd offer a 1-year deal for no more than $3-4 Mill.   And that's it.    Enough to sincerely say "we still want you"  and enough so Freeney doesn't say...   "it's an offer they want me to turn down, and I will"

We'd be telling him he's wanted for roughly 15-20 snaps a game...  line-up wide right and rush the QB.   That's it.   That, and his leadership.      Otherwise,  it's thanks for the memories and we'll be someday putting you in the Colt's Ring of Honor.

It's a tough, cold, often brutal business......

I don't think anyone with a 49% catch rate needs to stay. Avery's yard total for the year is impressive, but it should be a lot more impressive if you get my drift. He drops a lot of passes and we need a solid #2. Avery isn't that guy. He is as expendable as Fokou.

I disagree with the logic here.  Why is it so important to keep below average players for depth?  Starters always get injured which means we are only as good as our backups....who are, by the way, terrible.  We need depth that is almost as good as our starters or we are back to where we are now.  We could scrap the entire Oline. draft better lineman, grab some in FA and be a WHOLE lot better than we are now.  It's like saying, "Whoa, we better resign Curtis Painter because we need a backup"....Well, not if he's not any good you don't.

All I know is we still suck at running the football...as we have for pretty much the last 5 years....and remembering 2 glaring situations where it outright cost us one playoff game and the momentum in a Super Bowl....and that was WITH Peyton Manning at the helm of a well-oiled passing attack.

There was the Chargers playoff game when a failed 3rd and 2 prevented us from bleeding out the remaining 2 minutes.

And in the closing minutes of the 1st half of the Super Bowl vs New Orleans when a failed 3rd and 1 forced us to punt and resulted in a 6-10 point swing, with us having denied ourselves a FG or TD drive to close the half.

Flashy passing stats are fine, I guess, and good fuel for QB dick-size debates on the Forum....but we HAVE TO be able to run the football.

I don't know about anyone else....but I'm already tired of seeing Andrew Luck dodging pass rushers like a dog trying to cross the I-70 because we're in another 3rd and long, the result of him having little or no option in the form of a rushing game to keep those defenses honest. Thank God that Luck has been terrific at stretching drives with 3rd down and long conversions, or lets not kid ourselves, we could easily be 5-10 right now.

Do we really want to continue this....and in playoff situations against playoff-level defenses? And does anybody think RGIII or Russell Wilson would be where THEY are without their #1 and #2 ranked ground games? We're ranked 22nd, by the way. Remove Luck's rushing (running for his life) yards....and we'd be ranked 28th.

Now....we had very little cap space for Grigson to work on this coming into 2012 and Vick Ballard has shown some promise....at times. But the Colts rushing attack still commands almost ZERO respect from NFL defenses, largely due to having a parade of traffic cones posted at OG and no "smash mouth" element whatsoever.

The Colts have gotten  a LOT out of the players we have and that is a credit to Grigson and the coaches, the talents of Andrew Luck and a steamroll of inspiration this season.

But its time to REALLY address the O-line and round out a truly balanced offense that is physical when we need it to be, and that opponents have to respect.

If you're gonna build a monster...then build a monster.

My free agency/draft priority list starts in the trenches...OG/DT/RT...then CB/S/OLB...in that order.

Has fokou been solid as a backup this year? Avery had an average season and i think he should go, but if he stays he would be here to compete for the slot position with ty hilton, hilton will win anyway so he will be gone. We have to get a solid #2

Huh??

Avery average?    Disagree.   But that's not important.

But then you say if Avery stays he won't start because of TY Hilton.    OK.

So, if Hilton is one starter and Wayne is the other starter,  why do we need a solid #2??     Don't we already have that with our Wayne/Hilton combination?

Sorry,  but I'm not following your meaning....    can you explain?

Thanks....

I wanted to try out ty hilton in the slot and maybe get a #2 FA mike wallace or ty hilton

Catch rate doesn't really tell the whole story to me, doesn't seem to take into consideration overthrows and overall bad passes.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/25802/receiving_splits.html Hilton has 5 drops and 90 targets to Avery's 7 of 124 targets, Dont have a calculator on me but Hilton was targeted 90 times through 15 games (it has not taken into account week 16 game yet). We know Avery did not play yesterday so his catch percentage wont change but Hiltons will. Anyway thats what I use

    • When did he consult you about who they think is elite?
    • I have heard one GM who says he thinks LTs and defensive players may go earlier than expected. Interesting ro see who wil   Bowers won't be there at 15. He is special if u watch the tape.
    • If we stay at 15 and pick a player I would expect that player to be one of 19 he graded as a 1st rd talent.   The only WR’s I have seen in the top 20 of the entire draft are Harrison, Nabors and Odunze.  He can sit and hope if he wants but when he’s that close to possibly getting elite seems like it would be smart to move up and get one of them.  And who cares if we have to pay him a big second contract.  You should be happy you hit on a pick.  You really prefer a role player instead of elite?  Because of money.  Omg that’s an unbelievable take.  I can’t believe it.  Wow!
    • It’s hard to get a read from Ballard's presser. It almost seemed liked he co-signed his young DB room and said they’re just going to roll the dice with what they have but maybe add some competition. I get that he feels they can take a leap, but I’m not sure I can be convinced that Flowers or Jones will ever be better than Quinyon Mitchell or Cooper DeJean.   Of all of Ballard’s philosophies regarding team building (specifically related to the draft) the one I have the most issue with is the over confidence and eagerness to bank on low round players and UDFA’s as long term solutions. You have a projected starting secondary consisting a 7th round pick from Yale who did not play well last season, a 7th round corner who well outplayed his draft position, but has clear limitations athletically, a 3rd round safety who is gifted athletically, but we still don’t know if he’s better as FS or SS, and a 2nd round pick who showed great flashes when healthy but is still a question mark.    I get rolling the dice with JuJu, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t look for upgrades for Thomas and Jones/Flowers. I know he said he’d like to add competition there, but drafting a guy 4th round likely isn’t going to give your CB group a boost. I know he said they’re technically not young in his eyes, but they are young. If you’re going to add another “young” corner, add one with high end traits and skills. I’m not dead set on Mitchell or DeJean in round 1 or bust because I also like a couple day 2 corners. I’m just saying I’d much rather take a shot with one of them than just run it back with the same group.   Where we really need talent at for sure though is Edge.
