You have to consider his amounts of starts, and I still think he's done a fair job. If Freeney doesn't get back next year, look for Hughes to get a proper chance to shine. It's often a difficult task to contribute at elite levels when constantly being thrown in and out on the field.
So no, I don't think he's a bust and he's still very young. If given a proper chance next year, I expect him to contribute well.

Perhaps not a bust,  but certainly not what the Colts were hoping for.

He's OK to pretty good.   Seems to give good effort.

I think he's got one more year on his deal...   certainly no more than two.     I expect the Colts to bring him back for next season.

He has been pretty good ,but no hes not the Game Changer they were hoping to get,but lets see how he does next year with a healthier      DL        then we will see for sure . IMO jury is still out

Yeah, he has two more years. We don't know if Dwight will be back, so it's pretty certain we'll keep Hughes. From what I read his cap hit is over double his salary so financially it makes sense too.

Bust? He's still playing, just not like we expect a first rounder should.

6 starts this year in the first year of a new defense 4 sacks in those 6 starts and 39 tackles, Pretty good given the number of starts. He has 2 more years left on his deal and he is only 24. He fits the Robert Mathis role

I guess we need to define 'bust'. Jamarcus Russell is a bust. A first rounder that doesn't start is a disappointment, but I don't think he's a bust. Plus it's not like he was a high first rounder.

He's serviceable this point.

IMO he's done more than enough, he has great speed and pass rushing ability and if my memory serves me correct he has more sacks than Freeny does, i believe he can be an impact player if given more snaps, thats why i honestly think this will be Freeny's last seson with the colts. Mathis will slide over to the right side and Hughes will start opposite. I love Freeny, he's an amazing athlete and from my hometown but i don't see him in a colts uni next season..

He is so much better on the "Mathis' side than on the Freeney side.  They really need to explain to both within this system, however what the he double hockey sticks contain is!

When I played, I loved to sack the QB, but to have a great running back see you waiting for him in contain is sooooooooooooo PRICELESS!  :rawr:

Hughes gets down and after folks on special teams too.....not a bust, but still not a WIN.  Keep improving Jerry!  I am with my buddy Jay....this defense is what he needs....

Jerry Hughes is in on a lot of plays. I would grade him a B- this season, a Solid contributor.
The better our DE`s play the better our OLB can do.
Redding is Solid, and IMO Moala was starting to play pretty darn well.

The front seven succeeds as a unit. We need really good play at NT too. And we need a BIG stud ILB. Someone bigger, faster, longer than what we have now.
With a clean CAP, we have 3 more Drafts to Build the Monster. IMO

Even if he doesn't become a very productive starter, he's good as a backup, no reason to get rid of him.

I think Hughes has shown he belongs in the NFL but he still hasnt lived up to being a 1st round pick.

Hopefully we'll keep him around.

Still wished he would have put more of an effort in tacking Cromartie on that last kickoff in the Wild Card Game. It's also amazing that it is the same Mark Sanchez that beat Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in consecutive weeks on the road.

if we knew what we know now (which isn't all that much) we could see he isn't a first round pick. so he has under performed if he went in the 3rd or 4th round he would be a good pick.

Hughes is a JAG - just a guy. One of the Colts key offseason targets will be finding a way to better pressure the QB. If Hughes was something other than a JAG, that would not be the case.

And Gavin, I think you totally missed the point of Boiler Colt's post which is Hughes' talk has never matched the level of his play.

Your kinda making a point for me, that it really doesn't matter what round he was picked, what matters is if he can play or not.

He didn't play OLB in a 3-4 in college, he was projected to be a OLB in the NFL because of his size and skill set.

He could start and produce very well in the Mathis role over a full season, need to draft a player for Freeneys pass rushing role though, But Hughes can be a jack of all trades OLB in the Mathis role

Really, don't watch football? Chill. I said per play made, jokingly, meaning he makes so few yet he beats his chest and talks smack every time. To be able to talk trash you should at least be a play-maker.

If you expected him to be Aldon Smith, then yes, he's a bust.

However, if you expected him to be a highly serviceable player that is a decent pass rusher and a player that has improved greatly this season, then no, he's not a bust.

Both Freeney & Mathis have missed multiple games this year to say nothing of the time that he might spell them. There has been ample oppty for him to show something. He has not to this point. Nothing close to his draft status and nothing close to the production needed to where the Colts can let Freeney walk knowing they have his replacement already on the roster.

1) Thanks for the definition of football. That was really informative.

2) Regarding Hughes, get back to me when his play and talking coincide. You know a talk the talk, walk the walk type stuff.

Agreed, he's good enough to keep but not good enough to replace Freeney or Mathis. Not long term anyway.

I think Hughes will be better next year. If he stays, I think he'll Excel. He's doing good at his OLB Position this year. He just has to realize that he's not at TCU in the Mountain West Conference anymore. Gotta realize he needs his A Game week in & week out
