Compensatory picks for Garcon, Saturday and Clark

Recommended Posts

What level of compensatory picks do you expect for Garcon, Saturday and Clark?

Of course, for Garcon, Saturday and Clark, I expect a 5th, 6th & 7th rounder as compensatory picks. Garcon is a high impact free agent. When Edge left, we got a 3rd round compensatory pick, the highest that you can get. Because Garcon was injured, a 5th is what I am expecting. Saturday is the center for a playoff bound team, so a 6th at least is in order. Clark has had the least impact and a 7th rounder at best, much like Punter Smith.

So, I expect an extra 5th, 6th & 7th. That would be great, IMO.

Thoughts????

Clark isn't part of the equation.

It also depends on net gain vs. net loss of free agents signing elsewhere. I haven't looked into to much at this point, but with all that was brought it in it might cancel out most of what left.

Okay, I will admit it. I'm no draft wizard or guru.

I'm assuming compensatory picks are based on how far their new teams go in the Playoffs, franchise interest generated by other football clubs & how much money their new GM's agree to pay them to provide leadership to a new; usually young roster of inexperienced players, or a veteran team that is just a few pieces away from a Championship run.

Say Saturday for instance...Does the position matter? Since an experienced center is almost as important as a QB [given their need for intelligence & blocking schemes/protections for the QB] Is an experienced center worth more than a TE or WR? Or is it just based on a team's need & what they are willing to give the original team who owns their rights to land that specific player on their squad? I don't know. I'm asking/speculating.

The exact formula has never been released.

This was included in the announcement of the picks this past off-season.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.

Contracts & performance play into it, and there was a website that had some projections last year, but I haven't been able to track it down so far for the upcoming off-season.

Thank you FJC for being patient with me & not making me feel foolish. In addition, you also try to provide bloggers with useful rules & other relevant information. I appreciate it.

The packers are just the worse kind of people for benching saturday- now we can't have a high compensationary pick since they've benched him :(

Well...   first off,  I don't think there are any 'high' compensatory picks for anyone.   There are no 1's, 2's, or 3's.

I think the highest would be a #4.     Garcon might bring us that.    But that's a big maybe.

But Saturday?    I don't think so.    And I'm not sure that being benched the last two games is going to do any harm to whatever pick we may or may not get.    He played the vast majority of the season.   Two games down shouldn't be a problem -- at least, that's my speculation.

Highest is actually a 3rd.

Actually,  you are correct.   Thanks for setting that straight.   My bad for not doing that myself.

I just went to Wikipedia where every draft has it's own page with every player listed.   And the compensatory picks are clearly noted.    Best I can tell, they date back to the year 2000.

Very few #3's.   They get the fewest.

Then a few more 4's, and still more 5's and 6's and finally, most of the picks are 7's.  Typically, 10-20 of them.

There are 32 compensatory picks every year.   In essence, one more round.    So, what appears to be a 7 round draft, (224 picks) is in actuality, an 8-round draft. (256 picks)

It is hard to get a feel for what we will get, for as it has been said, it is kind of a proprietary secret for the NFL. Believe it or not, Wikipedia does a pretty good job of giving a broad outline for comp. picks. Based on what Garcon was paid, and when he has been healthy his impact, I am hoping for a 4th but no lower than a 5th. If he had stayed healthy, and due to a pretty large contract, I thought possibly we could get a 3rd. Saturday should bring a 6th to 7th and I think Tamme will bring us a 6th. So it would soften the blow of losing the 2nd rd. pick for Vontae.

all I know for sure is that the Colts shouldn't lose a pick the VD trade since he has missed games or one for MF/GL since Lloyd didn't make the team
We did get the 6th back from the Vontae, so that is a plus... I'm not sure how they decide our FA gains versus our losses, but I'm hoping for at least 2 picks...

7 - $1 to $2.5/2.75 million
This is AAV.

Thos numbers will likely increase for this year. The players that will likely gain their former team an early pick are Matt Flynn, Vincent Jackson, Pierre Garçon, Laurent Robinson, Robert Meachem, John Carlson, Demetress Bell, Carl Nicks, Ben Grubbs, Scott Wells, Mario Williams, Kendall Langford, Brodrick Bunkley, Curtis Lofton, Brandon Carr, Cortland Finnegan, Richard Marshall, Aaron Ross, and Eric Wright.

It would seem Garcon, with his payment/production could bring a 3rd or 4th rounder. Tamme/Saturday, maybe a 5th or 6th?

Some have said there's also a cap on how high a pick can be due to how long a specified player has been in the league.  Saturday may not qualify for a pick at all due to how long he's been in the league or it could also be that a 7th round pick would be the highest we could get for him.  This was discussed a while back when someone said that the highest we could get for Freeney would be a 5th due to how long he's been in the league.  Can't remember who said this (though I remember it was someone who I trust to provide accurate information) or when though.

If that's true, then we wouldn't get anything for the free agent that had the best season on his new team, Wheeler.

We picked up Redding, McGlynn, Zbkowski, Avery, and McKinney.  I don't expect any compensatory picks...

You were just reading my mind about including what the Colts added via FA....   that said, I think we lost more than we gained....  at least,  in terms of talent....    so I still think we'll gain at least one pick and a possible 2nd one as well...

This might be true. The production from Avery and Redding probably cancels out the production from anyone we lost. But the value of Garcon's contract outweighs anyone we added (I think his contract is bigger than them all combined).

Depending on how many total compensatories are handed out, we might get one at the back end of the draft (would probably be equal to a 9th rounder). But I figured a long time ago that we wouldn't get any. If we do, it will be a pleasant surprise.

It's always a kind of black box - no one knows the actual formula to determine the compensatory picks.  But some people out there have done some regression analysis (or something) and seem to predict it pretty well each year.  The ones I found in a quick search don't think the Colts are going to get any, but they seemed to list Stanton and Justice as FA pickups (even though both were obtained in trades)...

It's 32 compensatory picks that are handed out, and if not all of them are handed out based on whatever formula they use, then the leftover picks are given to teams based on the original draft order....so Jax would get the first leftover pick (due to 2 teams with the same record rotating order in each round), KC would get the 2nd leftover pick, Oakland the 3rd and so on.  So there would have to be 24 picks not handed out per their formula for us to get one of the leftovers.

I read an article earlier today that quoted "someone" who apparently is very good at predicting the compensatory picks and that person also thinks that the Colts will not get any compensatory picks.  I'd be kinda surprised if that were true but not completely.  And I can't quote the source or say who that someone was because...well I don't remember lol.
