All-Time Numbers Team

My initial plan was to make this just NFL, but we could do it for greatest all-time athletes too. So post who you think is the best from that number in NFL history and for all sports. I'll try to keep the list updated on the first page, so don't quote this first post as it will result in posts being insanely large. I'll get started with a few. Regular text denotes NFL players, bold denotes players from the all sports pool. I'm expecting some good discussions with some numbers, especially 21. If a player spends his career with multiple teams and changes his number, go with what team he is best known for. And while there are many easy choices, please try to limit how many you say so everyone can contribute.

I like Favre more than most. I love his passion for football and I don't blame him one bit for not wanting it to end. He's definitely one for the ages. I still look at his Monday Night game after his Dad passed away as one of the best moments I've witnessed in sports.

Agreed on all accounts, I think what sets him just below a guy like Peyton or Marino was Marino's and is currently Peytons cerebral approach, Not saying Brett is not a cerebral QB type but his instincts were obviously more the backyard football gunslinger type mentality but he obviously had to have bothI like Favre more than most. 7 Bert Jones
10 Guy Lafleur(NHL), Walt Frazier (NBA)
27 Gilles Villeneuve(F1) (F1 numbers aren't rigidly tied to individuals like they are in Nascar, but this number is as associated with GV as any possibly could be).
41 Tom Seaver (MLB)
There are hundreds more, but these were my childhood idols in each sport. Bert Jones didn't really have "enough" of a career to warrant, but I think there was some mention of "favorites" before this wanted into the realm of all-time greats.

If you post too many, your post will be edited. Try to keep it to a maximum of 15 so everyone has an opportunity to contribute
Why would you make a thread like this asking for who's the best player for all 99 numbers, and then restrict it to 15 players. If people want to contribute, they will, the number of players I post will not keep people from posting.
Thanks for making me waste the half an hour I spent on my post.
Silly thread...

Sorry, I didn't mean to waste your time or anything. But I asked multiple times that you please limit how many you do. It's possible that if you do all 100 numbers, you will use up the ideas of some other members who haven't seen the thread yet and wanted to contribute. Not only that, but the thread will take a long time to load if each person's post is 100+ lines long. That's why I asked to try to limit how many numbers you list. Appreciate the apology.
I should mention that I have a 16 page thread that involves picks; that takes up a lot of space, but that thread takes a second to load. Plus, it seems that not many people are posting more than 20 guys. I think the only ones are FJC and myself.
Also, for the taking other people's players idea. Personally, I copy pasted your original post, deleted all the names (besides PM, and some of the very obvious ones) and started from scratch. If people take my players, it means they agree with it, they're not just copying. Plus, I doubt people know every number by heart. I'll be honest, I had to look up some players for some numbers in the late 40s and early 60s.
I'm just a bit upset for wasting 30 mins, but it's fine. Can't get upset over little things like this.

I understand. I put your post back, so all your work and efforts are still there. However, I only put a handful of them into the list on the first post. That way, hopefully it's cool for both of usAppreciate the apology.

No worries. My apologies for all the confusion. I've definitely experienced working hard on something for a long time and then having it lost for what I felt was a bad reason. It's certainly not a feeling I wish to experience again. All the best! That's perfectly fine.

52 Ray Lewis One of the best to ever play the game, and Mike Webster would be there if split o vs. d.
53 Jeff Bostic Gotta love the hogs.
54Randy White/ Zach Thomas White was nasty and THomas was a technician
55 Junior Seau Gone way too young
56 Lawrence Taylor The stories he can tell almost exceed his talent on the field.
57 Tom Jackson Leader of the Orange Crush
58 Jack Lambert Put the roughness in unnecessary roughness. Derrick Thomas has to be thrown in here somehow.
59 Jack Ham, Another member of the Steeler wing of the HOF
60 Chuck Bednarik, The nastier the better
61 Nate Newton underrated guard.
62 Jim Langer by default... Maybe Mike Webster or Derrick Thomas can wear 62.
63 Jeff Saturday Have to go with the center the starting Quarterback is most comfortable with.
64 Jim Burt, there were better guards but I liked how he played the game could have easily been a hog.
65 Dave Butz A mountain of a man
66 Joe Jacoby, underrated lineman and the best hog of them all but it is hard to ignore Nitschke & Dobler two other nasty guys.
67 Reggie Mckenzie allowed O.J. to slip through holes long before he slipped through the legal system.
68 L.C. Greenwood/Russ Grimm. One is in the hall of fame, the other should be.
69 Tim Krumrie/Mark Schelreth Hard to choose between these two.
70 Art Donovan tie goes to the Colt over Huff
71 Charles Mann Manley got the headlines Mann made the plays.
72 John Matuzak, heck of a player before he scared most of the Goonies, and yes I'm holding Dierdorf's horrible announcing against him.
73 Larry Allen, mainly because I think Hannah is a bit overrated. Tie also goes to anyone non-Patriot.
74 Bob Lilly, a star among all-time star wearing Cowboys
75 Joe Greene, Had to be in the running for the baddest man on the planet in the 70's.
76 I"m giving Deacon Jones 76 because he was too mean and tough to ignore at 75.
77 Lyle Alzado continues the long run of not so polite people.
78 Anthony Munoz talent + flawless technique= Hall of Fame
79 Bob Golic.... kidding... Seeing if anyone was paying attention. Havey Martin
80 Jerry Rice and not many are in the neighborhood muchless ball park.
81 Art Monk played the game the right way
82 Raymond Berry, wouldn't likely see the field today but was among the best in his day.
83 Ted Hendricks As you can tell I like the tall/thick redwoods on the Defensive line.
84 Shannon Sharpe Need a trash talker on offense.
85 Antonio Gates New Breed of tight end.
86 Hines Ward Some call him dirty. Some say he just blocked and did his job.
87 Reggie Wayne 2012 Indianapolis Colts MVP
88 Marvin Harrison Best receiver in Colts history
89 Mark Bavaro Carrying 6-7 49ers 25+ yards showed the type of heart he had.
90 Julius Peppers Dumb as dirt but can play some football.
91 Kevin Greene Salt
92 Reggie White Another one taken way too soon.
93 Dwight Freeney though it is tempting to go with Seymour
94 Charles Hayley Since it's all about rings, doesn't he own the most?
95 Greg Llloyd Pepper
96 Clyde Simmons how did they never win a ring in Philly with that defense?
97 Cornelius Bennett Stud in Buffalo, leader in Indy
98 Tony Siragusa We won't be running out of beer because him & Riggins will hijack 2 Miller trucks.
99 Warren Sapp, with a mention of Jerome Brown who was lost in his prime and he was among the best at that point.

Just skimming through the lists though, a few more old school guys I noticed still absent: (I had to look up some of these numbers)
11 - Norm Van Brocklin (QB Rams/Eagles - still holds record for passing yds in a game)
14 - Don Hutson (WR Packers - he was Jerry Rice before Jerry Rice)
22 - Paul Krause (S vikings/redskins - all time leader in INTs)
27 - Steve Atwater (S broncos - gave the nigerian nightmares
31 - Jim Taylor (RB packers - one of the horses behind the packer sweep)
33 - Sammy Baugh (QB/S/P redskins - arguably greatest all around player to ever take the field)
40 - Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch (RB Rams - turned out to be the same number as Gale Sayers....tough act to follow)
63 - Willie Lanier (LB chiefs - another great MLB back in the 60s-70s)
64 - Jerry Kramer (G packers - out front on those packer sweeps...also played some kicker)
74 - Merlin Olsen (DT Rams - part of their "Fearsome Foursome")
75 - Deacon Jones (Rams DE - most famous of the "Fearsome Foursome")
77 - Red Grange (RB/DB bears - one of the first real stars of the NFL)
80 - Steve Largent, Chris Carter, Henry Ellard (not that they replace RIce, but thought they deserved mention)
88 - Alan Page (LB vikings - the beast of the "Purple People Eaters"...and to give Marvin Harrison a run for his money)

A limited number of season tickets are available
