Maryland is very much like Purdue when it comes to football. They are both not willing to pay a coach. simple as that.

To me these are GREAT adds. ND blew the Big Ten off... so move on.

And it isn't over... Look for Virginia, VT, Fla St, GT, ... It is not over by a long shot...

We will be seeing 4 super conferences running the show. 16 to 20 teams each... And the NCAA on it's way out.

Grab your seat while you can... Don't rule out ND to the BT yet either... they are just dipping their toes in the water right now.

I expected the super conferences to become reality. During the NFL lockout, they had all the NCAA news of teams moving, I knew it was only a matter of time.

Yep, the ACC will never make that ridiculous amount stick. The buy out will be far less.

And I find it interesting Fla St. voted no also... hmmmmmmmmm?

A lot of wheels turning here.......

Well as a Rutgers fan it makes sense because the Big East is becoming a bizarre consortium of small schools from all over the country, but in general I don't like any of the changes that have been sweeping the conferences. Tradition and geographic rivalries were the stabilizing forces of college sports, and now it's just an unsettling free for all.

And as important as the Big Ten has been to college football, and as much as I respect it, I've never felt any affinity for their traditional "brand" of football, and their base is a LONG way away. This entire situation is so ridiculous. Hey, I have an idea. How about a conference comprised of:

Army
Boston College
Connecticut
Maryland
Navy
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
Syracuse
West Virginia

Maybe they could call it, I don't know, the Big East or something. :P

Yeah, that's nuts. There's been a few of them.

The Big East is adding San Diego State, Boise State, SMU, Houston, Central Florida, and Memphis among others. It's just surreal. Does anyone consider transportation costs anymore?

Rutgers is faced with playing in an "east" division of the Big East along with Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, and South Florida. So that's one of five that's even remotely in the same geographic area. The west division is all over the map (pity poor Temple who is stuck in there with them).

Three of those "east" division members used their strong basketball programs to join the conference, only then even attempting to push football. The other two were so irrelevant to the national scene that I never even heard of them before they joined the conference. If I was running Rutgers I'd be scrambling to get out asap.

That's just insane. You would think that the small-school conferences would have an even harder time justifying the cost of travel.

I'd be in favor of just blowing up the entire system. Forget the politics and leveraging/negotiating by individual schools. There is WAY too much concern with making money. Who knows what kind of deal-making goes on. Just let the NCAA start from scratch. Redefine what makes a "division one" school (there are only 80 something that even dream of playing on the national stage in football). Divide them into 8 conferences based primarily on geography. Put the eight winners into a playoff at the end for a real national championship. No "conference" TV contracts, no massive bowl bonanza's going to individual schools. Have ALL the nationally earned proceeds go to the NCAA, to be divided equitably amongst all the division one schools - perhaps with a mandate to support all those smaller sports that are being dropped because schools "can't afford" them. Football doesn't have to be big business to be enjoyable to the fans. The players will be the same regardless. Just take it down a notch - and stop the insanity.

I hear the board of regents will vote Monday.

Maryland's president Anderson is all for the move... the board is supposedly mixed. If Maryland actually does go I look for the Big Ten to try and pry a couple more U's away from the ACC. Fla St. does not really fit the BT's academic profile so I imagine GT, Virginia, VT, what if NC left them ?????

If the Big Ten can land Maryland that will be huge on a couple different levels. DC/Balt TV market, fertile recruiting grounds, and academic research dollars.....

Rutgers brings the same... There are A LOT of Big Ten alums living in the upper east coast.

FSU will end up in the Big 12 or SEC most likely..

IMO this east coast SWOOP was a power play to hurt the ACC, and force ND's hand and make them make a decision. Join somewhere... and the Big Ten makes the most sense in every aspect. ND wants the East Coast presence... well guess what? The Big Ten has it now. They have entered the NY/NJ/DC/Baltimore markets. The BT is all of sudden looking more appealing to the Irish.

By the way ND wanted the BT to do what the ACC did for them.... The BT said every one is equal in this conf. And this is now the problem in the ACC. Favoritism makes folks angry.

I see ND joining the Big Ten when FSU leaves the ACC. And when the super conf. thing starts becoming a real possibility. ND will have to land anchor somewhere. The Big Ten now makes total sense.

I've read that the foundation that makes the Big Ten special is that it's comprised largely of huge land-grant universities with solid reputations in education and research. Rutgers and Maryland meet that description. FSU and Louisville do not. One assumes that they don't HAVE to add anyone, and so will move slowly and carefully.

Note that Virginia and Florida fit the bill if they want to extend their eastern presence. And Nebraska seems kind of alone where they are. I read where one writer suggested Kansas. I'm sure there are others.

By the way, RU is rumored to have their own press conference coming tomorrow.

Rutgers will join tomorrow. Nebraska was an AAU and CiC member until some BT schools voted them out? But they will be back. Very soon.

I am thinking after Mary and Rutgers... ND has some thinking to do....

Did you see ESPN's statement about the division alignments? Does it make sense to you that Wisconsin would stay in the "east" instead of Illinois?

Of course Michigan might make the most sense geographically, but I'm assuming that they want to keep them in the same division as Michigan State, and in a different division than Ohio State for "balance of power". I don't follow the conference closely (and I'm winging the geography) so I'm curious what you think.

Of course assuming that tomorrow's announcement goes through as expected, I'll be much more interested going forward.

The ironic part for me is that Rutgers and Penn State have been doing a slow dance for decades. PS thrived off recruiting in NJ, and beat the snot out of RU on those rare occasions when they played. Always the big brother that RU was chasing in their efforts to play "big time" sports. PS ALMOST joined the Big East in the 80's. If they had the conference might well never have blown up. And now after all this time they are finally in the same division of the same conference, immediately after PS received such a public smack in the face of their reputation that they arguably aren't worth "looking up to" anymore. And Greg Schiano (a Paterno disciple) had already made great strides in keeping NJ players home. This should make the job much easier, which will hurt PS further. Don't know quite what to make of it all.

Don't kid your self this is a coup for the Big Ten... and FSU will bolt next to the B12 or SEC.

I am telling you all the ND deal the ACC made with them is a death stroke to the conf.

FSU does not need ND, nor does any other ACC school. Instead of taking care of their own they go out of their way to make ND feel comfortable While others struggle. Bad business. . ...

Oh well ND will be forced to join the BT or ACC now... and real quick. I hope they get left out of the equation totally.

Like it or not the BT is the most stable conf. in the country... financially and athletically.

Keep mixing and matching ACC... Lou or UConn will look great replacing Mary and FSU.... heeh.
